Djoko should sign up for Vienna

He cannot let Rafa off the hook like this.

Can't believe he has bottled it like this. Djokovic has lost both to Med and Tsitsipas winning 1st set, and Djokovic has like 98% winning percentage when he wins first set in bo3.

What guarantee is there that he will win Vienna? Everyone including Djokovic thought he was a lock Shanghai then he ran into a NextGen against whom he has such a poor record so he might go home empty handed.

I don't understand what happened to Djokovic just now. He looked unbeatable starting in Tokyo up until 3-0 vs Tsitsipas, then he just lost without giving up much of a fight. It's like he's too bored to try nowadays unless he's facing Federer or Nadal.

In Tokyo his final opponent was Millman who was Rafa's Rnd 1 opponent at the USO. That's how weak the field was.

So Djokovic has mastered the art of crushing weak players, but then looks exceedingly average versus anybody competent? Could be, but I don't think so.

I think Djokovic is is on the edge of mentally going back to his goofy Pepe days of a few years ago.

I didn't say that. Using Tokyo as a benchmark for his 'unbeatability' considering the field there is ridiculous.

He is older now. It is much harder to maintain your consistency and intensity when you're in 30s. Bad days will happen more often too.

The field wasn't strong, but Millman playing Rafa is a pretty meaningless rationale. Rafa could have played anyone outside of the top 32 in the 1st round of the USO because it's a random draw.

It is okay for him to lose to Med right now. Djoker is not "fighting" for YE#1. He would like to have it, but is very "meh" about it.

Can he not still get it with a Paris and WTF win, which he is favored?

I'm actually surprised he hasn't. There are no guarantees, but it would be a good way to give him a chance at retaining #1.

I think Djokovic does care a lot about the YE#1 and overtaking Federer in the weeks at no.1 too so I'm surprised that it looks a bit that way. But yes, he could technically get it if he wins both Paris and WTF, but that is assuming that Nadal doesn't make at least the final in both of those events as well.

I truly think that is what he is thinking. He is like "I will just turn it on there."

I think you are missing the point.

Novack loses = bored or tired
RAFA loses = injured or recovering
Fedr loses = old and declined

But only one of these is an objective fact.

Look at the players he faced in Tokyo. Even 2017 Djokovic would have beaten those scrubs.

If Nadal reaches the SF of both Paris and the ATP finals, he is Year Ending #1. Even if Djokovic wins both tournaments.

Not true. If Djokovic wins both Paris and YEC undefeated, Nadal would need minimum 1220 points. Two semis won't do it. He would need 2 finals.

How is it letting RAFA off the hook when RAFA has had the better year  Outside of the AO Joker has been very meh. Meanwhile, RAFA has made at least the semi's in every event he's played outside of Acapulco. If anyone deserves YE#1 it's him.

Hello, remember Rafa in 2017 ? Came to Paris to play 1 match and withdraw ?
So it's desperation to play M1000's?

Anyways, it was a dumb move because he could have earnt way more points if he rested for WTF. WTF is where the easiest points to gain in the entire season are.

It was the height of desperation.

He was in no form or shape. But just to ward off Fed, he came to Paris to win 1 round and get just enough points that are needed.

Tokyo? You don't have to be great to look unbeatable in a weak draw like that....
And 3 games vs. Tsitsipas?
Awfully small sample size :)
I mean anyone can look great for 3 games, it means nothing.

Anyway, its illegal for Djokovic to play Vienna, because he's contractually obliged to play Rafa in an exhibition match that week.
Djokovic will help Rafa shake off the rust heading into Paris :)

I think maybe you are exaggerating a bit.. slightly..

And as said before, he could have just skipped Paris and won one measly match in WTF instead of worsening his injury in Paris. It was stupid, but not desperate.

I don't think it was a dumb move. He needed one win to secure it and it was much easier to get that win at Paris than at WTF given his physical state at that time.

So, why would it only be a bad look for Novak to play Vienna ? It is the No 1 ranking and history at stake.
