Well, he has lost a deciding set in a Slam once in 2019, once in 2020, once in 2021, once in 2022 and once in 2023. So he just doesn’t lose deciding sets that often in Slams these days. Let’s see what happens in 2024 where he has lost one deciding set already.

Does the injury have to happen before the deciding set or can he take a medical time out for an "injury" before the opponent is due to serve it out?

ah so I guess all the players that retire from matches from injuries (or lose in the 5th while obviously compromised) just simply forget to take painkillers then? They must be dumb

Or maybe they just happen to have those types of injuries for which painkillers don’t work… whereas Djoker only gets ones where they do?

Dude Rafa won whole RG 2022 with injection and made Wimbledon semi, of course that is not advisable as that will screw your body for long term.
Djokovic is lucky that he never got big injury apart from 2017 shoulder problems, I hope he play or not but dont make his injury worse, because what I saw from last two match, level is still there for fast court, he need to preserve body for other slam

I have to say it is really a mystery that will not be resolved in our lifetime. I hope he will reveal it when he publishes his memoirs.
