Who would have won in this hypothetical match up?

People forget that Federer was really good in this tournament, I thought that he was the best player in the tournament up until the SF. He was playing than Nadal up until their match , he just had a mental block against him during that period.

I always thought that Federer would have had a decent shot against this version of Djokovic

I think he wins both, but it wouldn't be easy. Especially against Berdych who, ironically, was a tougher slam opponent than Murray at that time.

Berdych should have gone two sets to love up against Nadal in the QF. Berdych was very good in that tournament

A set yeah. He probably wins the first since Djokovic would be trying to find his feet after the Murray epic.

But he definitely doesn't go 6 hours with Djokovic. It would be over in 4. Even in this era there's a difference between 25.5 (Nadal) and 30.5 (Fed) at the highest level.

The 2012 AO surface was slow as molasses irrespective of how the USO surface was.

In 2017 AO was faster than USO though.

Will never know. Fed never played Nadal on a fast court in BO5 before 2017. The 2012 match was pretty close as it was, so who knows what happens on a faster court? Probably pushes it to 5, but still loses, but his chances would have been higher.

Yep, he definitely was. I still see him losing just because of his mental weakness even if he goes up 2-0 in sets. Kinda like how he lost to Fed in 2009.

And I dare anyone to show me a Next Gen performance close to this one from Berdych.

the difference is significant here.
Nadal needs to be somewhere close to fed's level for mental issues to factor in. people under-estimate or forget that.

before AO 12 and after AO 12, fed thrashed nadal at YEC 11 and beat him convincingly at IW 12.

RG 11 later rounds and AO 12, fed/nadal were at same ballpark levels (ditto for WIm 07/08 and AO 09)

That’s a great set of what ifs. Berdych vs Murray is also a good one but I think Murray edges that.

He didn't, but they also didn't play in conditions that favored Fed's game. It's like Nadal never having to face Djokovic at RG to get back some confidence.
