Djokovic and Halep are the 2018 ITF world champions.

Romanians belong to the Roman nations, which are, for example, Italians or Spaniards.

The Romanian language however is very different from those languages apparently. It is much more archaic and has 3 genders and the case system like Latin did. You can't learn it in 2 weeks like you can Spanish.

The Romanian language is part of the Romance family but it has a heavy Slavic influence

I can read any Romance language and understand a good deal of it, but not Romanian

It's not just the slavic influence that makes it different. The grammar is archaic and more similar to old Latin than the western Romance languages.

It's analogous to Dutch/Swedish/Norwegian/Danish vs German. Dutch and the Scandinavian languages have been simplified (like English and the western Romance languages) whereas German is more similar to old German with 3 genders and the case system.

Having learned a bit of French, Spanish, and Italian I can definitely see how Italian overlaps with both quite well (with French and Spanish being more distinct from each other), but Romanian does appear to be quite different.

I have no idea what is the ITF champion. It seems like the ATP champion is most prestigious (and Djokovic was ATP champion indeed).

"She has spent 40 weeks of the year as the world number one".

Not sure when the article was first written but she has now completed 58 weeks as world number one and is unlikely to be overtaken anytime soon.

ITF champion is a tennis player who has achieved the highest number of points in GS tournaments (in the given season). E.g. therefore Djoker won ITF prize in 2013, although Nadal gained position YE1 and similar prize from ATP.

Murray was the ITF world champion in 2016 even though Djokovic had more points from GS:

Murray: F - F - W - QF = 1200 + 1200 + 2000 + 360 = 4760
Djokovic: W - W - 3R - F = 2000 + 2000 + 90 + 1200 = 5290

Another counterexample is the women's ITF champion in 2017 Muguruza ending up with fewer points than Venus:

Muguruza: QF - 4R - W - 4R = 430 + 240 + 2000 + 240 = 2910
V. Williams: F - 4R - F - SF = 1300 + 240 + 1300 + 780 = 3620

Too funny. People are discussing nationalities here,. Why does it matter if Halep is Slavic or Martian?. Give me a break. Is Zverev German or Russian? Well, it depends how you look at it.

Djokovic could be a Brit if he had accepted their citizenship back then ... no? Fed could an African, whatever ...

The ITF award ... well google it. It's not too hard. Congrats to both players btw.

However, the ITF is in control of majors, DC. I'm surprised there is no thread about the Olympics and all of that BS going on with 'a new DC' that almost all players are against.

You have to play DC in order to qualify for the Olympics. Why? However, there is a way around that rule too. It just depends who you are.

I know, I spiced up this thread too ... :censored:. Nothing makes sense nowadays. There you go.

Murray vs Djokovic case probably due to Davis Cup points participation.
Muguruza vs Williams was due to Venus didn't win any slam while Muguruza win one.

Serena W - NA - NA - NA = 2000
Ostapenko 3R - W -QF - 3R = 130 + 2000 + 430 + 130 = 2690
Muguruza: QF - 4R - W - 4R = 430 + 240 + 2000 + 240 = 2910
Stephens: NA - NA - 1R - W = 10 + 2000 = 2010

Thank God Ostapenko didn't win that year tho.

The ITF takes performance in all the events it organises into account. In addition to the Slams this includes Davis Cup, Federation Cup and the Olympics. Murray as the Olympic champion in 2016 may well have counterbalanced the fact that he won 1 less Slam than Djokovic.

Still annoyed Rafa was not given the ITF champion award winning 2 of the majors in 2013 - what a freakin awesome comeback that was.

Djokovic and Murray won 1 each. Djokovic got award because Nadal was injured and could not play AO

Yeah, I remember that year Djokovic won 1 GS and Nadal 2 GS.

Djokovic now along with Sampras as 6 time World Champion. If not for that crazy Murray run in 2016 now he would have been a 7 time World Champion. Crazy domination of the sport...

Still Djokovic has 5 ATP year ending #1. However, he still can surpass Sampras since he is very close to his 6 Year Ending #1 record.

Djokovic won it fairly. Apparently, the ITF gives the ITF Player of the year trophy to the player with more points won overall in Grand Slams. Even if Djokovic won less Grand Slams than Nadal in 2013, he accumulated more points overall due to more GS finals played. So he won it fairly.

Unless he reinjures himself, IDK how he won't hold #1 for a while since he has so few points to defend early on! He should clean up even if he doesn't win much! :p

That early exit at Wimbledon didn't help Rafa! The ITF must pay attention to that; all those GS points! :cautious:  ;)

As far as defending points and weeks at #1 - yes. But of course, by the end of the year, it's only about the comparative points he earns that year. I've always valued year-end more than weeks, though not all agree.

There are examples where player with higher points did not get the No 1
