Unstoppable force vs immovable object. Djokovic was near unbeatable (as usual at AO), crushing Federer and dropping only 1 set all tournament (to Tsonga who was red-hot as well). He had claimed the new HC of Melbourne Park as his kingdom. But Nadal showed the following year that he was a master at outlasting a zoning opponent - did it twice in succession to claim the most hard-fought title of his career.

Apart from the fans and the sport in general, who would be the winner of such a match?

It depends when the two versions played each other. If the match was 2007-2010 with each playing at those respective levels than Nadal. If it is 2011-beyond with both playing at those respective levels probably Djokovic. The mental aspect is everything.

My guess would be Djokovic in 5, unless he retires mid-match from heat stress like he did in 09. Pre-2010 Djokovic couldn't hold a candle to Nadal for endurance due to his breathing problems.

This is probably Djokovic's 3rd or 4th highest level in Australia and lost one set the entire tournament. Djokovic in 4 brutal sets.

Leaning with Nadal.

I think Djokovic was pretty nervous in that final and didn't start so hot in that final. Went down a set and almost a break vs Tsonga. I think the best Nadal ever at the AO digs in his jaws and never releases.

2008 Djoko beats all other Nadals imo.

I'm in the boat that thinks you pick maybe any other AO winning Novak and it'd be tough/no brainer, but this guy? While he certainly did win the vast majority of their hard court matches during that period... I mean to me Nadal Australia 2009 has that same thing that say Federer did at Roland Garros that year, or Novak in Australia in 2012, like this guy wasn't losing. Verdasco hit 95 winners and couldn't stop him. Djokovic 2008 probably wilts under the pressure of the task.

Yet he never won the AO without dropping a set.

Three players have won the slams without dropping a set:
Federer - 2007 AO, Wimbledon 2017
Nadal - 2008 FO, 2010 FO, 2017 FO
Borg - 1976 Wim, 1978 FO, 1980 FO
A dedicated thread on this topic is called for. :sneaky:

Quoted poster's assertion fairly embarrassingly off-base.

The Nadal fans who are not giving Djokovic chances don't remember 2008 AO.

Match ups matter. Nadal still played quite loopier in those days. And Djokovic played even more aggressive than he does at AO usually.

This is Djokovic's top 3-4 level at the event.

This isn't easy. The only question mark is Djokovic's endurance in my mind. He will outplay Rafael. But Rafael might outlast him.

Difficult to say.

Was searching for Federer match found this. He beats Ferrer here worse than 2013. Look at the return. Now Nadal's serve is much better, however still this was a tourney where Djokovic kept returning at his highest level.

So much this.
Djokovic would outplay Nadal.
Nadal would outgrind Djokovic.

Wow, I have never seen these highlights. Reminds me of the 2013 match with Djokovic hitting one highlight reel shot after another.

Looks like even I underestimate how good Djokovic was at AO08

I forgot how good Djokovic was playing at the Australian Open in 2008. Has to be up there with his 2011 run.

Nadal in 4 or 5..Djokovic's level was good but his forehand and serve were no where near his peak levels and he would have had trouble constantly hitting through a quick Nadal on a hard court

2009 AO Nadal is by far his greatest HC match and highest level off clay ever. He slays 2008 Djokovic in three sets. 2008 Djokovic is a cipher compared to his 2011/2015 level and Nadal was never better.

Easy call here.
