Djokovic as popular as ever

During 2019 USOpen I watched Nole live at the USOpen. The funny thing was the day also featured Roger Federer. As soon as the sessions were announced, the prize for Djokovic sessions kept decreasing and Federer sessions kept increasing. Now the Federer session did have Serena as well but I don't know how much that moved the needle.

Today Novak is alone in bottom half and Alcaraz on other half with at least slightly popular players like Medvedev and Zverev. The price for both sessions is exactly the same. In fact for Nole's days it's higher than Alcaraz.

The tide is changing. People know the goat won't play for very long time and are paying their top dollar to see him live.

If the prices are pretty much the same, it means that everyone is equal and there are no marquee player tickets? This is independent of the fact that I think Novak is actually quite popular and this is not the way to measure it. His endorsement deals kinda tells us the story anyway.

Oh and fwiw, I was up the Empire state building a few weeks ago and the only tennis player's pic on the Observatory floor is that of Novak's on the men's side and Serena's on the women's side. So yeah, the sole grand slam leader cannot be "unknown".

Djokovic is more popular in person than people make it seem though. Defo a huge presence at the US Open this year in real life.

TTW Twitter and Reddit isn't reality. Don't believe these weirdos with their agendas online.
Hope this period lasts for a couple of years. Djokovic deserves popularity before he decides to hang his racket.

I guess that is true especially for the Djokovic fans. He’s winding down his career and his true devotees are having their voices heard.

Now, times are changing and tennis advertising companies are using the younger players to promote the sport.

It’s hard for the Djokovic fans to see this happening, as evidenced by the outrage of seeing a picture of Djokovic being smaller than they expected or whatever they were upset about. It’s as though they feel he isn’t getting the love or respect he deserves, kinda they way Djokovic is always craving the love from everyone. I guess it goes to show just how much of an influence Djokovic has over his fans.

They even went to the length to start a thread about it all.

Crazy…

Yup thats what I have always felt. Just look at his endorsements.

Pretty obvious that Djokovic popularity pre-pandemic, which was already below Federer and Nadal, took a big hit when he decided to be the international leader of the anti-vaxx movement. He alienated more fans than he gained and those fans are just not coming back.

Very valid point.

Multiple reasons. Not any that I can support.

You’ve been remarkably honest on TTW about Novak’s unwise moves.

I respect you for that!

He’s not my fave, but I too hope Novak gets to finish his career honored and respected for the dedication and accomplishments he’s fought for. And more than that I hope his faith matures and his family is blessed.

I’m a Fed fan first, but there’s no real good in wishing his opponents anything but real blessings.

Life is much bigger than sports.

Novak never decided to be “the international leader of the anti-vaxx movement”.

He’s a famous athlete who refused the jab - and yes - did some dumb things around that. But he consistently defended everyone’s right to their own decision about the vaccines.

So tell no lies man.

Some in the media and many of his detractors foisted that mantle on him. He just wanted to avoid the vaccine and keep playing on the tour. That wasn’t going to work at all, but don’t make him out to be some failed anti-vaxx would be messiah.

He may not have decided to take that title but he certainly didn't do anything not to promote that image.

He threw a tour that was dumb. Yes.

But I don’t really know what else he did that wasn’t just his own personal choices being leveraged by the media.

Him saying again and again and again in interviews that he was not anti-vax and that he respected everyone’s right to make their own decision was not “poster boy talking points”. But that didn’t fit the “Ben Rothenberg” narrative.

Listen - I’m not a huge Novak fan. He’s not my dude. I’m Fedal and now Tiny C. I readily see the “aura” around him and his parents is complicated.

But Novak gets too much flak for being worried about a vaccine tons of people were worried about. (I took it and got boosted, but my heartbeat has been a little more funky ever since. I’m not the only one.) So he’s not some stand alone warrior for the vax movement. As much as some might want him to be.

He made his choice and was made to live with it. And he did.

So I think folks should let that go.

I have never in my life seen a Djokovic hat or shirt in public. Never.

Get it together guys.

It's real simple. Djoker is extremely popular.

Just not fed and Rafa popular.
Exactly this. during the last Olympics Novak was one of the most sought after, if not the most sought after, athletes in a group that included some of the greatest athletes in the world. Wherever he goes he draws crowds. Only in TTW would anyone think he is “unpopular”

Are you referring to the last Olympics where there were no fans/no crowds?

Please name the Olympic participants in 2020 who Djokovic was notably more sought after than. I'd like to hear these names.

Thanks in advance.

Lmao you're just a person on the internet. Go back to school.
Because every kid grows up wanting to be Rafa (or Rog), because the only players people who know very little about tennis talk about are Rog and Rafa, because even pro players consider Fedal rivalry the greatest, because the crowd always cheers for Rafa during his matches. The truth is Rafa is considered more iconic and he's much more popular as a result. Most people admire the beauty of Rog's game or Rafa's powerful and unstoppable warrior aura. Doesn't mean that Djoker isn't liked, but he doesn't come close to that in terms of popularity.

Stop taking everything so seriously, by the way. The "yes"' answer was a joke.

I think your view of this is too West-centric.
