Novak Djokovic, take a bow! Following his career has been amazing, and to see him lift his 3rd Wimbledon Crown was absolutely fantastic today. This is also his 9th Slam Title and elevates him to 8th on the All Time Slam List - he is the sole occupant of that spot. By winning today, he also enjoys his first Multi-Slam Season since that year that is 2011 - and I'm sure many of my fellow fans will also be delighted with this!
Regarding the match, it was another close one which started off very well. The key was that Novak stayed so solid off the ground at the baseline, he wasn't afraid to attack when he needed to and he returned serve exceptionally well. Absolutely his best match at Wimbledon this year, and what a great time to produce it!
Following the French Open final, I was not sure that he would win this title, but like a true champion he kept up the positive energy and just did it.
Here are some other (more minor) statistics and potential statistics heading into the US Open:
1. Djokovic has won at least 3 titles at 2 Slam venues now (AO and Wimbledon)
2. Djokovic now has a 3-0 record against Fedal in Wimbledon Finals (quite amazing really)
3. Djokovic has won 3 out of the last 5 Slams played (#Majoring in Majors)
4. Djokovic becomes the first man to defend his Wimbledon Title since Federer in 2007!
5. Djokovic's points tally stands at 13,845 as of tomorrow, a 4,180 point lead over no. 2 Federer
6. IF Djokovic wins the US Open, he will have won at least 2 Titles at 3 Slam venues (AO, Wimbledon, US Open)
7. IF Djokovic wins the US Open, he will be one of only two players to have had multiple 3-Slam Seasons (2011 so far), behind Federer (2004, 2006, 2007)
Roger Federer has had another great tournament, great effort to reach the final this year and really great fight in the first 3 sets! It's admirable he's still competing and able to deliver great performances (like the one on Friday). I think a higher first serve percentage was required today (around 75-76%) to really make inroads, but no worries. I'm sure the trolls/pundits will be out in full force ready to continue writing him off, but you really never can count him out of anything if he still has the desire and motivation! A lot of people laughed at him last year when he said he looked forward to "coming back next year (for the Wimbledon final)", but yet here he was! Will always be one of my favourites.
If anyone has further thoughts on the final, feel free to share.
