After being eliminated from the Madrid Masters 1000, Novak Djokovic contacted the Chilean to invite him to train for four days in Montenegro, all expenses paid. According to La Tercera, his father advised him not to accept the invitation to prevent the Serb from studying him too much. “They were already looking at him,” said Ricardo Tabilo

In the end, he played the 175 Challenger in Aix-en-Provence and emerged as champion. Seven days later he handed the Serb the fastest defeat of his career on clay in the third round of the Italian Open.

Alcaraz came to my mind, after reading this... His slump started right after hanging out with Nole.

Absolutely. Djoko knew Carlos was too nice to say no. Very, very smart of Tabilo to avoid this trap. He's just become a player I'll watch and root for.
Exactly. Novak is well known for such behaviours. Keep your friends close and your enemies closer.

He did it with Alcaraz, Medvedev and Wawrinka in the past as well.

Tabilo is very smart. No mind games with granpda  :p

This is what Djokovic needs to beat players. Can't just beat them outright with no knowledge because he doesn't have as much talent as Fed.

Kinda also shows Djoko knew the draw beforehand and other players don't.

Rafa did the same with Sinner before RG 20. Not that it would've changed the outcome because Rafa is Rafa. But still...
But what about the guys who've trained at the RNA?
Remember the 5 setter between FAA and Rafa at RG?
;)

He missed a really big opportunity, helped Sinner out a lot.

There’s no way to hide your game from players that you’re forced to play against and it makes no difference to Novak

Let’s see what happens at FO

This really is next chapter sort of stuff.

Could have learned some next level game management, some of those nuances that only get delivered to the special few. Interesting times. Let us find out, kid.

Good for him but most players would have jumped at that opportunity. Maybe it was the right decision since he did win that challenger he played that week but his father makes it sound like he's some 19 or 20 year old just starting out. He's almost 27 and anything he can learn at this point in his career from somebody like Novak, who won't be around much longer, would only help him in his career. Don't know why it comes off like he's bragging as if that's some accomplishment. He played one great tournament. Let's see him do that again 140 more times. Then he will be on the level of Novak.

Agreed, a big loss for the new up comer. There is a reason Stan never beat Fed on anything but clay but has 3 GS titles.
