Djokovic could win the WTF and Murray would still be able to end as #1...

What a joke this ranking system is. If Djokovic gets 1300 points at WTF, Murray could still clinch #1 by winning Paris and getting 1000 points at WTF

So we could have a situation where one player would have 2 slams, 4 masters, and the WTF and STILL not be #1

This is what happens when the points system gives no incentive to be number 1, when the 2nd ranked player gets the same draw benefits, and gets MORE THAN HALF THE POINTS THAT THE WINNER GETS JUST BY REACHING THE FINAL:


2000 points for slam winner, 1200 points for finalist
1000 points for Masters winner, 600 for finalist
1300-1500 points for WTF winner, 800-1000 for finalist


What an absolute joke this ranking system is. Djokovic beat Murray in 2 slam finals and still will lose his #1, all because the points system gives no incentive to be #1

That is a good thing.

They get more than half the points because they won 6/7 matches. The winner wins 7/7. Finalists more than deserve the points they get.

The #1 should never get any benefits. That just entrenches them. Staying #1 should be a fight - you get there through merit and hard work.

The slams are about prestige, and as said the #1 ranking is about consistency. Djokovic's 2016 is more prestigious, Murray's 2016 has been more consistent.
I'm sure Djokovic would prefer to have the most prestigious and the most consistent 2016.

Either player wins YEC and they go 3/2 on the other and deserve to finish Year-End No. 1

IF Murray wins Paris, he will have 130 points YE advantage [ 275 deducted] so Djokovic must win more points than him at WTF in order to be YE#1.
If Murray goes to final, Djokovic needs a win, but if Murray doesn't reach final, then Djokovic doesn't need a win, just to make more points than Murray.

Before YEC both have equal level complaints : Djokovic 2/1 Slams and Murray 0 pnts OGS

At YEC : Totally still on Djokovic's racket as it is Murray's even if they both make finals
Can be no complaints at THE END of year whoever gets Year-End No. 1

It really is, there's not a thing that should be changed.

Nadal and Djokovic were in a similar situation in 2013. Nadal had won 2 slams but Djokovic with his 1 slam had a chance to end the year at no.1. But Nadal was a true man and stopped Novak. Now 3 years later Nole can't do the same thing and stop Murray and that's despite the help of a Guru

The 2016 Race includes the points earned in the 2015 Davis Cup final, because the Race starts on the Monday following the WTF and includes points earned after that.

Somebody can win the golden slam in a year, WTF, a couple of masters, and still end not being No.1. But one thing is clear: What you need to do to end up being No.1. So long as thats available, everything is fair.

Again that's not a fool proof solution...Finalist deserves a decent chunk of points and reducing their points arguably favours the losing Semi Finalists as that gap is now reduced.
Current system rewards consistency over and above flashes of brilliance, something I'm personally pretty happy about...much rather number 1 be someone who shows up week in week out as opposed to someone who might jag a couple of big wins but then do very little for rest of the year.

the point system should not give any "bonuses" to the #1, he earns the same points that anyone could get by winning the same matches( finals,semis), X player is #1 because he consistently wins the bigger matches more than others and actually the fact that a hypothetical #2 player gets more than half the points for losing in the final to said best player in the world is more than an incentive to motivate the player to not let go any inch to maintain his place at the throne because its just as easy to lose it with those circumstances, remember that it is the BEST PLAYER in the whole planet that we are talking about so therefore in a scale it should be a tiny bit more on the side against him, makes the tittle more valuable and respectable wich only contributes to the prestige of wearing the crown and knowing that everyone else has it a little bit easier than you but you got it a little harder than anyone else to stay up there

The ATP ranking system is only a method of determining seedings and probability of a players likely progression . It's not a Player Of The Year determinate , the ITF do that. The seeding system does not value big tournaments and weight wins highly , it values consistency as it's determining seedings .
Djokovic is likely to win ITF POTY on Major and Masters count .
