"The 20-time grand slam winner was attempting to enter the country on a visa that does not permit medical exemptions for being unvaccinated, a source briefed on the matter told The Age and the Herald. As a result, Border Force sought Victorian government support to facilitate his entry. The federal agency asked for the Andrews government’s support because Victoria partners with Tennis Australia in running the event that Djokovic’s visa pertains to.

"Federal authorities contacted Victorian departmental officials asking them to formally back his application. Victorian officials asked the federal authorities to put their request in writing and eventually rejected the request to sponsor Djokovic’s visa. The decision not to do so reflects the anger towards Djokovic among Victorian ministers and senior officials. It also highlights their sensitivity to being seen to assist Djokovic’s bid to play at the Open despite his outspoken vaccine scepticism and non-disclosure of the reason for his exemption."

Again this has not been confirmed. But yeah hope he gets sent back packing, but not on a technicality as anyone can easily get a copy or overnight the "right" visa.

Stephen Parnis, a former vice president of the Australian Medical Association, wrote on Twitter: “I don’t care how good a tennis player he is. If he’s refusing to get vaccinated, he shouldn’t be allowed in... If this exemption is true, it sends an appalling message to millions seeking to reduce [the COVID] risk to themselves and others.”

The deputy Victorian Liberal leader, lawmaker David Southwick, fumed in his own tweet: “What a disgrace! We have had 6 lockdowns—schools and small businesses closed, funerals and weddings told not to go ahead, families separated for months on end and now a tennis star gets an exemption... A kick in the guts to every Victorian.”

He can get a new visa in a matter of hours. He might have to spend a night at the airport and that is it.

If having had COvid was a valid exemption reason, then many players (and people who want to access Australia) everyone could exploit that loophole. That's a weak loophole and the authorities with some real power should uphold the meaning of the rules or it's an insult to the very strict rules that their own citizens have had to follow.

It must have been a different type of visa. I am surprised he did not apply for the correct category even after so many years of experience.
He does not apply for his own visas, it is handled by others.
Just like I have no idea what visas they stamp in my passport after 25 years in industry...

What's "a different type of visa"? What's "the correct category" one?

Visa 421 If you are a sportsperson wishing to enter Australia to play then you will need to obtain a Subclass 421 Sports Visa. Who is this visa for? This visa is for both professional and amateur individuals and teams as well as their coaches, support staff or instructors.

Dusan Ustevic , Telegraf

Novak Djokovic did not receive permission to enter Melbourne, as the Victoria authorities denied him a visa with allegedly bad documentation, which does not match the persons who received the medical exemption.

After several hours of interrogation in the premises of the Immigration Department , where Novak was asked to provide documentation and evidence on the basis of which he received a medical exemption, Novak Djokovic was sent into custody, where he is currently, the Telegraph has learned.

As our portal finds out, the best tennis player in the world is treated like a criminal and has a scandalous treatment. He is being held in one room in custody, two police officers are being guarded, his mobile phone and contact with anyone from his team have been banned.

This is a terrible article? They are saying he falsified documents?

That is standard treatment. Usually, people are bundled together in a detention center. Here, he has his own room.

Wake up to how people are treated in reality. In the US, they are strip-searched for drugs before being interrogated. Novak is just experiencing what thousands have gone through when even they were not the problem, but a computer glitch was.

Never heard of tourist, business, or student visas before? You get a different type of visa depending on the reasons for your trip to the country. Although in a lot of cases for travel people just get a standard one without any other fuss. Different if you're going to be making money in the country you're visiting though.

Don't be a smart arse! Those questions are a follow up on someone else's suggestions Novak's on a "wrong visa". Till this moment, we've not learnt what visa he's arrived there. But if you know, since you are so smart, let us know!
