ROFLMAO they're actually going to keep him out now.

I didn't believe it, but it appears the opportunity to score political points was too large.

I'm kind of in shock that such a country actually is operating like this, honestly.

It's not very bright to gloat about getting an exemption to enter a country where 90% of the population don't want you there....before you're in that country.
If he'd said nothing about the exemption but just turned up people would have presumed he must have been vaccinated. So not sure why he didn't just do this.

Iit is unquestionably a federal government issue under the Constitution. But Morrison said only yesterday that if the exemption was signed off then entry was fine with him.

He then changed his mind without making it public.
The way both state and federal governments dealt with this is pure political power play. Shift the responsibility because neither want to be seen as weak now.

As a massive Djokovic fan I agree with this. Should have shut up until after the tournament

Very true. But it looks from the outside like they jerked him around good. Not cool. But there always seems to be major drama with this guy. He’s interesting for sure.

You wish old people to die early because a tennis player has been denied entry to a country where he does not live? That's warped. o_O

The boomers could have been triple vaxxed by now?? And even if they weren't, they could just stay home? Why would you make it the problem of others?

So according to this Border Force > Victoria Department of Health. RIP "Open" Era, you had a good run.

This is the newest

At 5.30am, 6 hours after Novak Djokovic landed in Melbourne, he's still being questioned by Border Force officials in an airport room. They're assessing docs to support his vax exemption. A source said the longer it goes, the smaller the chance he'll be permitted entry

Hilarious...you mean kind of like when he kept arguing at the US Open 2020 when he hit the lines person? The longer that went on, the more it was obvious they were just letting him talk and it wouldn't go his way.

@Lleytonstation :(

Idt it mattered whether he disclosed it or not. They would've speculated he was getting one based on the lead up, and found out at the border anyways. What I don't get is Border Force were the ones asking for his entry when they realized the mistake when he was in the air. Why are they playing tough guy now?
He will still be able to play if he gets it figured out and comes back.

People got it the wrong way around when they thought Djokovic would benefit from his status in the game on this issue. It's actually the opposite. They will probably quietly let in a few players no one really cares about, because, well, no one cares and will even notice. Djokovic, however, is too high profile, so it creates a political backlash.

A politician will always care much more about public reaction than a single foreign athlete.

Imagine, having the greatest active tennis player in the world obtain necessary exemptions, then have him travel around the globe to the worst continent on earth, then turning him away on some technicality... like it even matters what sort of visa they have? Every living organism on that God forsaken island knows who he is and why he is there.

I dont think we have seen the end of this story.

Is this from Reuters? Ok, my bad. I thought it was just some guy twitting some gossip.

I couldn't find the information in the newspapers I usually read.

Also on BBC, Breaking, on Twitter:

"Australia cancels visa of world tennis No.1 Novak Djokovic and intends to deport him on Thursday, with his lawyers expected to appeal"

who knows if this appeal will work.

"Don't you know who I am" might not stand up in court.

Yeh think he/his team have got time to do that, should be ok.

The existing TA/Vic Gov exemption should still apply however if it dodn't then good luck trying to anonymise his application cough cough

Nobody was going to assume that. He would have been asked to confirm at every turn and even then people would peddle what they want to be true

I think if Djokovic didn’t make that Insta post that wouldn’t have happened. Australia politics is saving face because of the severe backlash they received for the medical exception.

I actually think they should have addressed it very quickly and sent him home. The longer they drag it out, keep him in holding and sort of give updates; it weakens the border control and government's position. If it's truly just a technicality, then his lawyers would presumably be successful at some point (who knows if it would be in time).

I think a business visa is the correct one to apply for because he's there for business. Wondering if it's some sort of H-1 (in American lingo) that he or tennis players really need because they have special skill. Anyhow, whenever a person just doesn't do the straightforward and honest thing, they are likely to bump into a lot more trouble and errors and here we are.

I also think the longer the border police and Australian government let this play out, the more likely it will turn into arguments about vaccines overall, elitism and all that. They need to make a decision and stay firm with it. Otherwise they are just opening a can of worms.

I think Australia should wait about 8 hours until he is about 1/2 way home and then have a lower court ruling indicate "Exemption Granted"...

then wait until he starts his final decent and then a higher court indicate "Exemption Declined!!!"

Haven't been following the events but seeing the sheer amount of threads about this and reading some posts, this has turned into Netflix level drama lol. To make a small issue into a spectacle in like five acts - that's talent.

Djokovic won't accept a medical safety requirement that millions of people follow because of his principles, yet he's not principled enough to refuse participation under the "oppressive" rules. You know what they say about sitting on two chairs.

8 hours was long enough to play a match or two, c'mon!

I still believe the story is not finished yet and there will be more twists and turns. His lawyers are already doing everything in their power to contest this decision

This is true, but Djokovic has lawyers and there are Australian immigration experts. He could have dealt with this issue back in Serbia.
I doubt there was any thought of a Visa problem by Novak or his team back in Serbia. The Visa situation is a fake problem, put in place in order to keep Novak from playing in the AO. Murray and Federer are the favorites of the Aussie establishment, who despise Djokovic.
