This is way too harsh.
Look at other examples of Nalbandian, Shapalov, and even young Tim Henman, who clearly reacted in anger and took a huge swing and hit someone.
In this case it was barely hit: it's unfortunate it hit the old lady in the throat, but a game penalty would have been enough punishment.

You can't make exceptions based on stuff like that, the rules are very clear and with Djokovic, this is FAR from the first time an incidient like this has happened. He has hit balls away in fustration before, he has thrown his racquet that almost bounced up at hit someone in the crowd. This one was possibly his weakest in terms of reaction but it was a long time coming and unfortunately for him, it came at the absolute worst time.

Just going by the stats, dude. Nadal opted not to play US Open this year. That was his choice. Because he's not confident that he can play at peak level across 2 Slams along with the risk of injury. So he chose to go with RG even despite the coronavirus risk being the same. He'll break the Slam record by winning RG. But I don't think he's going to win the US Open ever again. He'll be 35 when he plays it next year and there are stronger players come to the forefront now.

Whatever you say Nostradamus. Can I buy that crystal ball of yours....it seems so clear.LOL!

Nobody saw Nadal becoming the best US Open player of the last decade, or winning two of the last 3 completed editions of Flushing Meadows, so pardon me if I don't see your opinions as any sort of gospel.

Nadal is the best active player at 2 of the 4 slams. That is the only fact. The rest is just your overactive hopes or imagination.

Like I said on another thread. This is just as bad as Nalbandian in 2012.

LOL at the thread,
LMAO at that gif selection, as though you had been sitting on it just waiting for a chance to use it.
I don't even know what's real anymore, beginning to think tennis really is becoming like WWE

Seriously. Rafa has played in a combined 10 Wimbledon and Aussie finals. He's been on the wrong end of 3 (07 Wimb, 12 AO, 17 AO) epic finals and was robbed by injury of another AO (14). I'd argue that Rafa's peak AO is better than Roger's peak AO. The 09 Rafa probably beats 12' Djoker in 4 sets.
That's a fair argument. I disagree with the last part, but it's not outrageous to claim Rafa's absolute AO peak may be better than Roger's.

I don’t understand how anyone can say this is not default worthy? Several posters here (some are the same ones who are defending this) said Serena should have been defaulted and banned for life for her verbal comments to the linesman. Djokovic actually hit someone and people are defending it? Come on. Rules are rules.

In the pre-Covid world, I would agree 100%, but you can't predict anything right now.

I'm sure Rafa has been training diligently. You're right, there hasn't been play on the court. Anything could happen and if there was ever a year for a fluke outcome then 2020 seems like the year.

I agree, but is the rules. Like Shapovalov in DC, Nalbandian in Queens.
change the rules
I didn't even know you could be disqualified for almost nothing. He obviously didn't have any intention of hitting anyone. If these are the rules, then it is a good call. I'd still change this specific rule.

This stinks, but I can't vehemently disagree with the decision. I love Novak, but he has to control those bursts of temper better. I was hoping he'd get a game penalty, or something short of a DQ.

Novak has skirted on thin ice a number of times in the past with chucking his racquet into the stands and almost hitting someone. This time it did, albeit it was an angry ball he hit, and he's paid the price. It's unfortunate and it seems he was the one asking that the disqualification rule be respected against the officials who were obviously humming and haaing about what to do so kudos to him for that. Can't be any exceptions made as that would have made the whole situation just look a lot worse.

Another one who says "the rules are very clear" but I challenge you to point out where in the rulebook does it say that this is grounds for immediate disqualification
