Djokovic, Federer, Alcaraz and Sinner combined have 27 clay masters....Nadal by himself has 26 clay masters....

Edited and apologies for the correction.

Missed out Muster from the title list, put Sinner there instead.

His first participation in a Masters 1000 on clay was Monte Carlo 2003 and the last in Rome 2024.
In how many tournaments of this category on his preferred surface did he participate in his career to win 26?

Monte Carlo - 11 wins, 6 losses - Total 17 played
Madrid/Hamburg - 5 wins, 11 losses = Total 16 played
Rome - 10 wins, 8 losses = Total 18 played

Total = 26 wins out of 41 masters

Clay weak era no traditional clay players.. he feasted
When was the clay strong era? Why was Rafa so unique on clay? This differs from a weak era, where one player dominated on all surfaces. Even in the Mighty Federer days, he didn't crack it on clay.

This was Federer at Roland Garros up to when he first played Rafa there.

Yes, Muster fits in better than Sinner, whose career has just started.

I was meaning to write Muster in the title.

The point is, Djokovic, Federer, Muster and Alcaraz are 2 to 5 in the list of most masters won on clay, and you have to add them all up just to get one extra than Nadal did by himself.

Federer certainly had a period before Nadal to make progress at RG, but he couldn't get it together. One of the reasons why he didn't win the slam race in the end.

His fans believe that without Nadal, he would have dominated clay, but that clearly is not the case, because he had plenty of opportunities before Nadal came on the scene.

He had chances to win a lot on clay. For instance, he could have won Rome in 2003 and MC in 2014 without Nadal there.

Sure, Nadal stopped him quite a bit, but Federer had several cracks at the clay when Nadal was not around.

The crazy thing is how CRISPY Federer was on clay from 05-07. Literally it took UNBELIEVABLE tennis from Nadal to beat him at RG those 3 times. These are things that annoying get glossed over by people trying to put down Nadal’s clay competition. They need to look at the level in those matches.

I think in 2006 Federer was lucky to get past Nalbandian in the manner he did, because he was being outplayed in the semis by him.

Nalby sure loved to show up against Rogi for a while there lol

Nalbandian played Federer tough even in some losses. In Rome 2006, before the epic with Nadal, Federer got past Nalbandian by the skin of his teeth.

The problem for David was that he was far too inconsistent, but when he would turn up, he feared no one.

I think Federer and Nadal were in awe of Nalbandian's shots on hardcourt. That was on Rafa's mind when he played David at IW in 2009 in Rnd 16, because their h2h was 2:0 to David (Madrid & Paris indoors). Nalbandian had MP in the 2nd set, but suddenly Rafa decided he wasn't going to lose, so he stretched the set to a TB, which he won, then won the final set 6:0. Rafa went on to win the title. From then on, he wasn't scared of Nalbandian and won their next 5 matches.

Nalbandian's best years were 2002-2007....he started to fade after that incredible indoor season, and was more of a dangerous floater at that point. Kind of like how Hewitt was.

That is 26 of 51 played as it was later revised, W/L 26-25, roughly 50%. So this means that some times he wins, and some times he loses.
Too inconsistent.

Roland Garros is 14 wins and 5 losses I think.
A bit better, but doesn’t change the picture much.

That's better than a Jack of all trades and master of none.

You just forgot to mentioned that Djokovic was politically banned for 2 majors and 6 masters on hard courts and one additional disqualification from the US Open.
Plus he would over passed Federer at canceled Wimbledon 2020 , Roger was out with the knee injury, Rafa last title in London was in 2010.
Novak record at Wimbledon is 100-12 !!!

It's not What If statistics. That was Djokovic's choice.

Roland Garros is 14 wins and 4 losses. In 2016, Rafa didn't lose; he retired after winning the 2nd round with a wrist injury.

He is the summary of your long text.

The coast was clear. No credible opponents for Djokovic. Rafa played one tournament in 2023. He got a hip injury at the AO and was sidelined for the rest of the year. Federer had retired, and Murray was unable to come back from his hip surgery.

From 2012, Rafa played part-time 90% of the time.

Well, obviously my previous post was ironic.

That said, I believe what is being counted here is Rafa’s participation in the tournament rather than his win–loss record in individual matches. In that sense, he did enter in 2016 winning a couple matches as you pointed out, and therefore “failed” to win it.

2023 was a different case altogether, since he did not enter the tournament at all.

This is correct. Nadal officially played RG 2016, he didn't lose a match there, but that doesn't mean he didn't fail to win the title.

Just like Federer in YEC 2014.

No ban.

Don't you think that non productive period of 2013 to 2016 cost him the Slam race.
He reached finals but failed to win the trophies.

Yeah, I thought so. LOL I was there last year, which is why it is fresh in my mind.
Zagreb has nice women , I met some at IT conference in Vienna .
One particularity look liked the mini version the movie star Mira Furlan.
One of my regrets I didn't wait in line for the signing of her book in my neighborhood. She soon passed away from some tropic disease she cached on some exotic island during the movie shoot.
Literary she was forced exiled from Zagreb because she married a Serb from Belgrade at the begging of the 90s.

Any period that you are competing in and are unable to win in would be considered detrimental to the attempts in winning the slam race.

Having said that...imagine if he started winning trophies at 19-20, instead of at nearly 22 years of age....

Croatia in general has nice women, Split also has its fair share.
