Will Djokovic goes back to #3 now since he gained more poits by reaching semis and Murray did not?
I don't think so, didn't Djokovic reach the semis last year? This week is effectively defending the points from Hamburg Masters (Madrid last year was much later and indoor which Murray won). Murray will probably gain points on Djokovic even though he hasn't gone as far.
I don't think Djokovic will have much of a chance until Wimbledon where he has few points to defend. Up until then I can only see Murray improving on last year. Not that I want Djokovic to regain no. 3 though.
If Djokovic wins tomorrow, he goes back to number 3.
Thank you both for your explanations.
Yes, if Djokovic reaches the final he should get back the number three ranking, and if I were a betting man, I wouldn't bet against him from doing so.
So you're saying he's gonna roll Rafa?
Thats a very small obstacle.
well murray had to defend 1000 points in this tournament and lost...
but as I hear, the points wont be officially lost until october i think.
Djoker will go to no.3 unless murray wins a slam
That's false. if Murray gets far in RG, then it will compensate for his loss in Madrid.
Oh, and dont forget that Djokovic won the Master's cup last year, and the chances of him winning again are very slim...
As people of said, if he beats Rafa today then yes, he will be Number 3 again. If not, then no, he'll be behind Murray.
Wow every time there's ranking at stake nadal is always in the way to intervene
^^^ LOL thats actually pretty true ahahaa
annoying isn't he?
Murray has slightly extended his lead over Novak this week - the gap will go from 70 to 190points (still very close though)- with Novak defending 900 points at RG to Murray's 150.
Yep, i expect Murray to do well in RG. At least QF's.
He's stated this morning that making the 2nd week is his target - he also says that he 'plans to have a good Roland Garros'.
Before the clay season kicked off, guys like Cesc were questioning whether Murray would make a QF. I said at the time that a semi and a couple of quarters woukd represent a good clay season for 2009. I think QF is a reasonable target with semi a bit of a stretch. Anything more than that can be best described as possible but unlikely.
Was he a favorite last year??? Clearly not. He was just smarter than the dumb Brit...
All this doesn't really matter. #3 or #4 ATM is irrelevant.
If Novak continues to play the way he has been playing this last couple of months he will climb back up the rankings sooner or later. #2 is also not our of reach.
True, but you have to remember that after the FO, Murray will be at home, then on his favorite surface which he was the second best player on after Rafa
O and to the OP, Djokovic will actually loose points, becuase of the new point distribution
Since when Djokovic became clay court specialist
Djokovic was the best hardcourt player in 2008.
