Djokovic hits line judge in the shoulder, NOT the throat, US open 2020

I've seen the replay a dozen times, and looking at the flight of the ball in slow motion, it does look like it hits her around the throat or chin......but it wasn't much more than a firm tap back and she went down like a ton of bricks! Looked a little dramatic to me. Suing Nolo for $50 million next?

I expect she had this all planned out. I mean it's a natural reaction when you've just been unexpectedly whacked by a tennis ball that you spend half a second thinking about how you'll fall down and clutch a different part of your body to the one that's been hit. Because obviously it's a situation in which you would consider all your options carefully.

Has anyone ever actually been struck unexpectedly and painfully on any part of the body? You react instinctively.

How about way over the top dramatic. This tops just about anything I have ever seen in a soccer game.If she is that fragile, she should not be out there in the first place.

Looks like she got struck in the neck to me. shrug

The Swiss Federation is calling for him to be suspended for 5 years. Only allow him to play in the French Open to keep Rafa from passing Roger.

Djokovic did not hit the ball hard. It was more like a careless flick, hardly a ball struck in anger. And I don't believe for a second that he intended to hit the line judge; he knows the rules and is aware that hitting a judge will get him disqualified. If the judge had caught the ball, gotten out of the way, or was hit below the neck, I think the outcome would have been different. She clearly wasn't aware the ball was coming her way and it smacked her in the neck/throat. If it was the throat, I don't think she was being dramatic or acting; the throat is soft and you don't have to be hit too hard to gag.

In one case during martial training a trainer jabbed me in the throat rather lightly in just the right place causing me to gag uncontrollably and get really p....d. Lesson learned immediately. I was not surprised that the linesperson went down however lightly many on these forums think that ball was struck.

Exactly.

For all the conspiracy theorists out there, it makes zero sense that she was faking her distress and this was some calculated plan to embellish the situation to get Djokovic disqualified or penalized.

She would have needed to have this completely planned out in advance to know exactly how to fake her reaction and execute it immediately, and all of this still relies on Djokovic or someone actually negligently hitting a ball directly at her, which is something you wouldn't expect to ever happen.

I've just never seen anything like this. Even the most outlandish conspiracy theories usually have some attempt at justification. But this video just shows someone reacting in an absolutely normal way to being unexpectedly hit - how can anyone "see" anything else?

I've had two experiences of being unexpectedly hit like this (fortunately with no lasting damage) and you literally can't think of anything else in that moment - the shock just overwhelms you. The idea that you can "fake" anything is lunacy.

I agree that he did not hit the ball hard at all. She wasn't paying attention. Regrettable incident. At the end of the day, she's fine. It scared her but she did not get hurt and the DQ was way too harsh. For God's sake, Fed targeted a spectator's head intentionally and in anger. It's lucky the guy managed to dodge it. That should be penalized a lot more severely.

Liberal Progressive for sure judging from the BLM sticker she had on the front of her polo shirt! I think Djokovic is a socially liberal, so both are the same mindset politically speaking. Djokovic is trying to form an union movement too!

Yeah she went down like she took a Fritz 140 mph serve, not a tap

Try getting hit in the throat with a "tap." The throat is one of the softest and most vulnerable parts of the body; that's why boxers and fighters keep their heads tilted forward at all times to protect the area.
"Strikes to the back of the head and neck are illegal in both Boxing and MMA " per google

Answer to Bud from the locked thread: Djoko did not hit the ball "dangerously" either (nor violently, nor angrily). That leaves us with "recklessly", which happens not so rarely and I've never seen a player disqualified for it. If the woman had sustained an injury, then one could argue it did not leave them any choice but we all know she did not and did not have to receive any medical treatment.

I love all these threads - so thank you, OP

I enjoyed watching Djoko get DQ'd immensely, and watching his fans squirm and defend his actions over and over makes it so much better

Hope there are more threads tomorrow *fingers crossed*

I wish I could enjoy it but I'm just depressed as all hell by it.

There are people looking at that video and making up a version of events that's completely at odds with reality. They can't answer any rational questions about it. They can't explain how anyone can concoct an evil plan half a second after a ball whacks into them out of nowhere. And yet we're going to hear for years about how this wholly innocent woman "cheated" Djoko out of the US Open.

Excuse me!
Those are choice words my friend.

If she's wholly innocent, how could she have "cheated" Djoko?
By US Open I assume you mean the title?
How can anyone know he would have won?

Every person who claims the ball wasn't hit too hard should be hit in the balls with a tennis ball traveling at the same speed then get back to me.

Are you referring to the 2019 RG incident? The ball was always going skyward, spectator guy just didn't realise it from that angle (can't blame him, I'd get scared too).

whatever, just remind them PCB was serving for the set at the time

i could just as easily assume he was about to get routined by PCB as they can assume he would've won the tournament

maybe PCB is the victim in this - Djokovic realized he couldn't hang with the big dogs, and decided to bail out by smacking a ball at a linesperson rather than let PCB dethrone him

meanwhile, in the real world, Djoko damaged his reputation and is still at 17, that's good enough for me

You can assume a magical fairy would win the tournament. You can assume what you want. Real world PCB was even if he went up a set a huge underdog. Djokovic was a heavy favorite to win the tournament by oddsmakers as well as anyone that follows tennis.

You probably were not aware of the fact that Djokovic's shoulder was really bothering him that's why he was so frustrated and firing balls around the court in the first set. When he played Edwards he lost the first set without any incident because his shoulder was not bothering him. Every time he grabs his shoulder during a match, that match does not end well for him. This was the main reason he was so agitated.

*shrug* PCB was up a break, sorry if the fact that Djokovic was losing when he was defaulted is inconvenient for you...maybe he's just not as good as you think he is at US Open...in fact, last year he also didn't win a set in the 4th round, went down in straights against the first seed he faced

oh well, at least he didn't waste a few hours being trounced in the 4th round this year
