Djokovic in 2014

Novak fans and other fans alike, what do you want to see from him next year, such as improvements etc? And will 2014 be Djokovic's year? If I am going by statistics:

Nadal won 1 slam in 2011.
Nadal won 1 slam in 2012.
Nadal won 2 slams in 2013.

Djokovic won 1 slam in 2012.
Djokovic won 1 slam in 2013.

They seems to have a slam each for 2 years then Nadal comes back with 2 slams for the third year, will Djokovic do the same or maybe come back with more than 2? Seems like a cycle.

Discuss.

If Novak wins the French Open, he could do major damage for the rest of the year. Look at Federer in 2009.

He did not do it in 2011, he will not do it in 2014.
However, if he takes the FO (and the AO), anything will be possible...

The thing is, if he manages to bring back his 2011 level of play then he will win the Grand Slam in 2014. In 2011 the difference was that he had to deal with Nadal and Federer. Take out Federer and he probably wins the Grand Slam in 2011.

Next year its hard to see Federer stopping him at a slam. If Djokovic reaches his old form again and maintains it throughout the year he's got a decent shot at the Grand Slam.

There's a reason why people don't win the calendar slam. If he hasn't done it by now, he's certainly not doing it in 2014. He's only had one year where he won more than 1 slam, and one year where he won one outside of the AO. Get real.

Djokovic has had to deal with some very tough competition. Since 2011 he's only lost Fed/Nadal/Murray at slams, but in terms of consistency at reaching Semis/Finals he's actually been Federer-like recently.

His current form is the best it's been since 2011, and its possible he may be reaching that kind of dominance again. Then look at the other top players, it wont be as tough as it was in 2011. The Federer threat has been replaced by Murray, who is less consistent and not as good a player. In 2011 Nadal was extremely consistent in facing Djokvoic in finals, he may not pose the same challenge in 2014. Sure Nadal was great in 2013, but he usually doesnt have back-to-back strong seasons. Its very possible that Nadal threat fades a bit in 2014.

Del Potro could pose a threat to Djokovic in the future. Look at his Wimbledon semifinal against him.

Djokovic's form is less than scary. He's just improved his level back to where it was earlier this year in the AO, etc. Federer could have beat him at the WTF if he had his act together a bit more. He won Shanghai, Beijing and the WTF last year too. He looked the way he does now in the MC final and it didn't help him much at the FO, Wimby or USO.

Going perfect 28-0 at the slams? That's not going to happen since Nole has to conquer all 3 surfaces.

Even Laver 1969 GS he didn't need to win 28 matches and only conquer 2 surfaces.

Every time Novak wins a few tournaments, this same talk starts. You'd think people would know by now that a CYGS is the hardest thing to do in tennis. Murray and Nadal (and Delpo for that matter) are not gonna disappear next year, and Djokovic is more than due for an early exit at a slam.

The thing is Nole has never made all 4 slam finals in a year to begin with.

With exception to Federer, no player has ever won 3 slams/per year twice. To expect Nole to win 3 slams/year is very tough already, let alone 4 slams.

True, but he did have a chance at the "Nole Slam" in 2012, but Nadal completely overwhelmed him in the FO final.

As much as it gets spun like Nadal can't do anything to hurt Djokovic on here, it's quite the opposite. No one, except Federer (not really now) and Murray can stretch Djokovic and move him around and push him back as much as Rafa can. That's why he's the only guy to beat him over 20 times. He has him on a string sometimes.

That's a product of the 7-0 streak. It was so dramatic and unexpected that people attribute the more recent turnaround in slams in Nadal's favor to Djokovic not being up to par. The fact is that it is Nadal who upped the ante in my opinion. He knows he can't play passively against Djokovic and wait for errors. Djokovic has made Nadal a better player capable of winning the US HC slam. It was a tough lesson for Rafa in 2011, but it was worth learning.

If Murray is back in shape I don't see Djoker winning more than 1 slam.
Andy beat Djoker 2 of the last 3 GS they played.

Nadal has beaten Djokovic at grandslam 3 consicutive times now. French open (2012), French open(2013) and Us open(2013). To expect him to fade away in 2014 is just ridiculous. I expect the same battle in 2014 between the threesome at the top (Nadal, Djokovic and Murray). I hope other top players will step up to make it more interesting in 2014.

I already called Nole for the CYGS in 2014. I think he has a legit shot, I don't think Delpo is gong to be a threat to Nole at the slams. We don't even know Murray's form yet, and I don't know if he is going to have a Nadal like comeback, I don't think he will lose ground really, but I don't think he'll come back to winning slams, like Nadal.
Fed is capable of a high level, but again, I don't think he can knock Nadal or Nole off at the slam level anymore, personally.

In other threads I pick Nadal to win 10-11 French Opens, so that means I pick him to win, but I do think Djoker has a legit shot at the Grand Slam.

I could also see Nadal doing it as well, but a lot less likely given that Nole has stepped up as a true rival, but Nadal has managed to tough him out at the slams as of late.

the reason for your first sentence is:

ROGER FEDERER

I dont mean to sound ridiculously optimistic thinking he will win the CYGS. All I'm saying is that if he reaches his 2011 level again, then next year he would have a decent shot at winning the Grand Slam.

But for all we know he will only end up winning Australia again. Or maybe Djokovic is already on the decline and he wont win any Grand Slam's next year.

I think people trying to predict a CYGS for Djokovic are looking way too far ahead. We predict this every year for one player or another, and it never happens. And not only does it not happen, the player in question never gets even close.

It's easy to give a reasoning as to why Djokovic has a chance, but going as far as to actually predict a CYGS is pretty crazy IMHO no matter what qualifying factors you throw in there. Djokovic almost lost in Australia this year for god's sake.

And the same thing happened in 2012. Djoker scrapes out an AO title, and everybody is CYGS this and CYGS that, but then Nadal takes RG, Federer takes Wimbledon, and Murray takes the USO.

And I could've easily given reasons as to why Djokovic was going to win the 3 remaining slams in 2012, but he didn't, and like I said, not only did he not do it, he didn't even get close.

It's not a slight against Novak, it's just this CYGS talk is the same every year, and whoever it's about never gets close. I think Djokovic can win 2 slams in 2014, but I think 3 is a stretch, and 4 is out to lunch. People are just not realizing how hard it is to win 1 slam a year, let alone all 4 with the immense pressure that winning the first 3 would create on the player in question.

It's rare for a player to have two great years in their career. What Nole achieved in 2011 he will not likely duplicate the same results, especially when 2014 is 3 years from 2011.

Wilander - 1988
JMac - 1984
Nadal - 2010
Nole - 2011
Federer - 2006

No player has better result after his 25th birthday. That's include Borg, Sampras or Connors.

But 2011 is also 3 years from 2008.

:p

(I know it's not the same)

Novak will win 2-3 slams in 2014.

To me, Novak is the favorite to be the one doing most of the dominating next year. But Rafa is a very, very close second. Murray a clear third, Delpo perhaps the only one who can trouble the big three for real and Fed maybe pulling an upset somewhere along the way.

Djoko: Anywhere between 1-3 slams wouldn't surprise me. 0 would though. And 4 as well.
Nadal: 1-2 slams most likely.
Murray: 0-2 slams, depending on his level after the injury.
Delpo: 0-1
Fed: 0-1 - with 0 being by far the most likely

I doubt we'll see any new kids on the block next year, so the competition will be between 28 year old Nadal (from June), 27 year old Djoko and Murray (from May) and perhaps Delpo who turns 25

Del Potro will be 26 next year.

Would not rule out Djokovic winning the Grand Slam. It's gonna be very hard but it's within his reach.

He's not that kind of player--in other words, he's not a master of the sport.

He would need his competition to screw up big time for Djokovic to match the supreme achievement in tennis.

lol delpo sucks. why are you guys so high on him? he's not going anywhere and is nearly 26. i will stop posting if he wins another slam.

Bring him or any single top player back 40 years to play against a smaller field and he has a chance.

Nonsense.

Either the man is a master or he is not. No one has achieved what it takes to be so recognized since Laver--a true master of the sport.

Mastering against a pool that is 20x smaller in size than the current pool isn't not an apple to orange comparison.

i agree he is overrated, but don't forget he's the youngest of the top 6, novak, rafa will get old soon... del potro got time to win a 2nd grand slam, especially when you see how weak is the new generation :)

According to the venerable Forehand of Doom, this thread is an orgiastic display of wild dreams and illogical predictions completely unadulterated by reason or even the slightest amount of common sense.

I'm pretty sure I got the clap once. You surely meant venereable, no? :)

Don't judge a book by the cover.

People talking a Calendar Grand Slam for Djokovic are delusional. He couldn't do it in 2011 at his all time peak, so it is never ever going to happen.

Australian Open- quarters
French Open- runner up
Wimbledon- quarters
U.S Open- semis

Will win a Masters or two and probably end the year a distant #2 to Nadal. Nadal will likely win his first WTF though.
