"Djokovic is a great champion and he is the one I am best with from a human point of view." John McEnroe

Legend
In a long interview, John McEnroe praised Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic, the Big 3 who rewrote tennis history. McEnroe explained: "Roger Federer is the most stylish player I've ever seen on a tennis court.

He's like he's an updated version of Rod Laver. Rafael Nadal doesn't let go, he wants to win every single point. I think he's even passed Jimmy Connors in this respect. I didn't think it was possible, but Rafa succeeded.

Novak Djokovic is a great champion and he is the one I am best with from a human point of view." John the said: "I am proud of what I have done, I have learned a lot from both my successes and my failures. At this stage of my life, I feel at peace with myself.

If I would have enjoyed myself in the Internet age ? Absolutely not, it would have been a nightmare. If social media had been so popular when I was 20, I would have done so many things I would have regretted."

We all know some of those people who lose it a little in the head when they get old. I think John is certainly one of those. He makes strange statements mostly just to draw attention to himself and attempt to stay relevant.

Media needs to start ignoring him.

I mean we can't have everything we want lol. I love Mac, if he likes Novak the most it is what it is. Still love Mac.

Sounds like he couldn't think of anything good to say about Djokovic, so he said something vague :happydevil:

Maybe it's apropo if we want to think of Novak Djokovic as an enimga! He came from the most humble of backgrounds living in a war-torn country! We can't compare Fedal's start in the game with Nole who I keep imagining dodging bullets and playing hopscotch with landmines! It's a wonder he is where he is; esp. since he had to obviously overcome Fedal who had a head-start on him! History is still being written on them! We'll see who winds up with the ultimate moniker of GOAT after it's all said and done! :cautious:

I mean, you don't need to advocate or redeem him on every opportunity and try to get other people to agree with you. What matters is whether you like him or not

McEnroe and Wilander competing for who can change their opinion the most

Lol at insecure Fedal fans being triggered by this.
Nobody is triggered. Most folks are just bored of @pj80 making a new thread literally any time somebody says something about Novak. Or in some cases it's probably some quote from months/years back.

He's also probably trying to link to that banned tennis blog that nobody here cares about, but didn't realize it before he started the thread.

I'm talking about people criticizing McEnroe for what he supposedly said. He can be criticized for a lot of things, but complaining about this shows true insecurity.

You'll get a Mc quote on ANY player:laughing:
Here's John calling Rafa the classiest
‘Humblest, Classiest Champion I’ve ever seen in any sport!’ John McEnroe LAUDS Rafael Nadal

When Djokovic, Nadal and Federer are retired, Men's tennis is going to enter the mother of all weak eras.

There is nobody who can really match Nadal and Djokovic in 2022 and it says much about those two as players and it says a lot about the quality of the tour.

It bothers me seeing Nadal and Djokovic fans rip pieces out of each other, their careers are nearing the end, they cannot keep this up much longer, enjoy them while you can.

Agreed.
Whenever fans - of any player or team, for that matter - are so overzealous, I question how much they are a fan of the sport, itself.

connors is often overrated....there is no match for nadal in terms of fighting spirit....if connors was not an american, he would not have got so much recognition as a fighter.....wilander and lendl never get enough praise.....

Doesn't seem like that.

Maybe he means temperament-wise? They both can't hold their anger in, even though McEnroe was worse in that department.

I think this is quite true. His antics on court were all about attention, even for bad things. So through his career in media he also tried to use edgy or controversial comments to create attention. His more reflective comments now might just be trying to come to grips with that, but they won't provide the same satisfaction for him. In that reflective regard, sure he can better relate to Djokovic who has had his share of reflective posturing. But to me, I think he really is more akin to his Mac 2.0, Kyrgios as far as the attention seeking, bratty 5 year old attitudes, vindictive comments, and such. The only reason he aligns himself with the Djo is to try to align with the biggest names, though he continues to reach out to Kyrgios and comment how he would like to coach him. That would REALLY help Mac stay in the spotlight just a little longer.

Ego is a funny thing when it has never been addressed.

I suggest you watch Connors vs. Pernfors at 1987 Wimbledon, and Connors' matches against P. McEnroe, Krickstein and Haarhuis at the 1991 US Open for starters. I remember Wilander saying that Connors was his favourite player, because Connors had qualities that he (Wilander) didn't have.

i watched a few matches of connors, like that famous final against ashe at wimby and one with borg in 78 us final.....i just think his fighting ability had a ceiling, just like how hewitt could only fight till a certain level.....he may have had some late career dramatics but that did not get him any slam either.....

Connors against Pernfors trailed 1-6, 1-6, 1-4 and then 1-6, 1-6, 7-5, 0-3. Connors against P. McEnroe trailed 4-6, 6-7, 0-3 and 0-40 down on serve.
