Djokovic is going to micro-analyze Medvedev's game to make sure he never loses in a best of 5 again to him

Even if he did, what good will it do? Djokovic is 34. Meddy is 25 and brimming with confidence. Djokovic cannot do much about the bad days that come with getting old or his opponent serving out their tree. An opponent who can only improve, too.

Novak can't even analyze how to beat Wawrinka in slams. He may never be comfortable against Med anymore, like Wawrinka they hit slightly harder and place ball back to center patiently
.

Med still can improve his S&V and net game.

Was there anything particularly different in Medvedev's game this Sunday from their previous encounters or how Daniil played this year, apart from the standout serving? I mean, sure Novak and his team will analyze the match and Medvedev's tactics/strengths/weaknesses, but analyzing the issues that came up in Novak's play would be a bigger priority.
The T serve with side spin is already big difference. He don't serve so strong against Nadal in USO2019.

Other than that he tried to extend rallies, AO court don't allow it unlike USO courts. It will be interesting if he can beat novak in AO.

Nadal and Fed don't have trouble against med due to their lopsided forehand generate pace. Djokovic needed to play attacking tennis all out.

I'm a bit confused. The AO has been faster in recent years, but wasn't this USO (relatively) fast as well this year? With quite a few notable serving performances, I would think that it was. Is it the bounce that makes the difference?

I can really see Djokovic doing this. He's going to micro-analyze everything about Medvedev, the way he plays, his weaknesses, how guys like Thiem and Tsitsipas beat him in straight sets. It will be like the Nishikori 2014 US Open loss all over again, where he's just going to beat Medvedev every time they meet now. Medvedev was honestly foolish to win that match, and win it in straight sets no less. He's opened up a big can of worms.

Who agrees with this?

Uh oh I bet Medvedev is scared of Djokovic watching his YouTube videos lol

AO is faster than USO with a low bounce. USO is really high bouncing, Nadal had a lot of success there. I think Med's retrieving game will only dominate USO in years to come.

1 way to beat Djokovic is overpower him slightly but maintaining balance in both sides of rally. Med really done well there.

Djokovic is getting older and Medvedev will likely improve so I don't think this is going to matter all that much.

No he won’t, he knows why he lost, he made that clear enough in his press conference. Also, Medvedev is way better now and will be a way better player than Nishikori. Medvedev actually proves to be a challenge for Novak, Nishikori was genuinely 1-2 blips where he beat Novak, he was never going to be a problem for him.

Medvedev stands so deep that Joker doesn't get cheap points on serve, even if Joker hits his spots. Once the return is in play Medvedev is the favourite in a rally. Joker needs to serve wide or short.

Joker is better at net. Joker needs to come in or bring Medvedev in.

Joker played really badly. Tired and too much pressure.

I doubt it. I actually think from Novak’s presser he won’t play that much longer. He might try to get the slam record but he knows the younger guys are primed to take over. I doubt he risks playing too long to start getting humiliated off them in matches. I can see Djoko playing max 2 more seasons then quitting. Same for Nadal too.

Novak is an emotional guy and does miss his family a lot and doing other things. I think if he gets the slam record there be nothing left to go for. Even now I think he will be pretty satisfied with his career.

He should have micro analyzed his game before playing him in a final with the calendar slam at stake.

What’s there to analyze? Make legs work better, hit tennis ball inside lines this time?
That's cold.

Probably since his aim is to knock off Nadal and Federer. I see him losing motivation quickly after getting 21. I have a feeling Nadal will be strong next season/

The two interesting things about the presser for me were when he said winning slams and playing for his country were the two things that motivate him the most now. I'm assuming he wasn't talking Davis Cup and ATP Cup? The other thing was where he talked about the future of the sport, and maybe I was reading too much into it but I saw what he seemed to be saying as like... It's the duty of the old guys to go out there and take their beatings to help these new guys become stars and aid the popularity of the sport? Like I said, I could be way off, but neither of those points made me think he's going away anytime soon.

Could have been true if it was 10 years earlier. Novak has great data scientist im his team . Also Medvedev can have his counter strategy also which he did at USO

How can he make Medvedev serve worse lol? His best hope is Medvedev having a bad serving day. Djokovic's prime return game is not coming back so he's out of luck there.

Too early to make such claims. Djokovic said earlier this year that he plans to play for a long time. I don't see one bad loss blunt his desire completely. He will be raring to go at AO 2022 and will do everything possible to be at his very best, unlike this USO.

Oh :( Just a couple of months ago, everyone was saying he'd reach 30-40 slams. I guess the end is coming sooner than we thought. He's had a lot of close matches this year. Could have lost early in AO and FO.

His "era" was with Nadal, Federer, Murray, Wawrinka and all those guys. Once they're all gone, he has the slam record and the younger guys are all giving him tough matches, I can see him quitting. Not sure when that will be. 1-2 years perhaps?

Djokovic was unbelievably lucky to come even close to a CYGS. He did not have a single stretch of dominant or even great tennis the entire year.

Yeah I think it will be exactly like that. Maybe 2-3 years max. About 2 years I feel. Motivation will become an issue at somepoint as well as even more decline. The young players will only get stronger too. I still feel Novak will have a good chance at Wimbledon next year though

I have to agree. That’s why I happy with what he got because he was lucky at times to win the slams he won this year. I don’t expect another dominant year like that again

Most people were saying it was because he had another few gears he could go through and was playing within himself.

It was an accumulation of tough matches that beat him. Several difficult players in a row. Annoying young guys like Rune and Brooksby taking sets off him, then Berrettini taking a set off him, Zverev pushing him to 5, before he had nothing left in the tank against Medvedev. It was a team effort from several young players, not just 1 of them.

That's how I see it. There will be no ATG emerging to beat him. It will be a series of annoying tough opponents of similar quality to Zverev who push him to 4-5 sets. Playing 6-7 matches like that when he's 37/38 years old will be too much to handle.

The fact that he was dropping sets to Rune and Brooksby was an enormous red flag to begin with, and these young players will be getting better, not worse.

And I'm not just talking about USO. He hasn't played great tennis all year long. Clutch tennis, but not great. He was utterly beatable at every tournament and dropped tons of sets every time.

He was dominant at Wimbledon and the SF + F of the AO, but all other matches looked like a real slog. He should still get #21 though, it would be hard to imagine he didn't win at least 1 slam from here. Then it becomes a question of how many more French Opens can Nadal win (I don't believe Nadal has much chance at any of the other slams).

He meant winning the Olympics, which he tried hard to do this year. The Olympic effort took a lot out of Djokovic this summer, and probably let the air out of his balloon, he was gassed by the end of this recent event.

Right, which makes me think it's still very much on his mind, and thus he's probably not going anywhere before 2024. His white whale perhaps.

Wishful thinking. Age means a decline in movement and consistency. "Out with the old, in with the new" can only be delayed for so long.

Also, somewhat related, since you lose consistency with age, you need match play to keep it. Choosing to miss tournaments can be a risky strategy. You don't want to play too much to preserve your (older) body, but you can't play too little that your game suffers. You can do it if the gap between you and the other players is wide, but when young players are biting at your heels, it's a tougher proposition. Djokovic chose to miss tournament before the USO, and maybe that explains (at least partly) his struggles early in matches throughout the tournament. Losing the 1st set in BO5 against lesser opponents is not that big a deal, but when you get to the semis/finals, well, it can bite you in the arse.

He will def analyse as does every top player when they lose a high profile match. I think that he will do more self analysis though. He will ask the question of why he succumbed to the pressure and other questions. He will come back stronger I feel. This was probably just what he needed to take his level to an even higher level of greatness. Champions are always evolving. Cheers!

Djokovic should hire Craig O'Shannessy again.

If you lose all 4 majors in the first round, you lose 12 sets. Less than 22. What a stupid thing for this person to say.
I think it's about ratio.

2021, number of sets lost at majors per match
Nadal (3+4+0+0) 7/11 .636
Medvedev (5+4+6+1) 16/23 .696
Djokovic (5+6+2+9) 22/28 .786
Zverev (4+5+4+4) 17/21 .810
Berrettini (1+4+6+7) 18/21 .857

There is nothing that 34 year old Djokovic can do to prevent losing to 25 year old Medvedev in some slams in the future, unless Medvedev has a career ending injury, or Djokovic retires very soon (very unlikely IMO). The best he can do is micro analyse his game that he can win some future encounters with the much younger Medvedev in slams, and I do think he will manage that.
