He still has 2 tough matches, especially if he gets to the final. Del Potro and Berdych are both playing fantastic tennis.

I would like to see Ferrer or Del Potro win their first MS1000....they deserve one even with the top seeds failing. Federer has enough already....just daunting that Federer could get number 2 ranking.

At times it would be nice to see a new winner outside Top4 -
I think it was soderling- last player outside Top 4 to win Masters event

i sure hope so... this is exactly the kind of tournament he HAS to win... he can ask for nothing more than to play a tourney and not have to play nadal, djoker, or murray.

It would be beyond brilliant if he could have that #2 seed for RG... that would just really change everything.... the idea of a Nadal Djoker semi and them blasting each other for 7 hours while Federer comes into the final fresh by comparison makes my mouth water.

This is a fast, slippery court - Del Potro and Berdych have a good chance against him; especially the latter.

Ferrer is a set down at the moment and was always going to have his work cut out for him on this surface. Tipsy will need to play out of his skin but he seems more capable because this court rewards shot makers.

I don't know.. Del Potro and Berdych are playing fantastically. I would love Fed to win, but it's definitely anyone's tourney.

It's Federer's to lose. Del Potro or Berdych are both fully capable of an upset though.

I think Federer would beat Del Potro but i don't know about Berdych. That guy is dangerous.

I'm OK with pretty much ANYONE winning this thing except Berdych. I dunno why but I just can't stand that guy. There's something about him that creeps me the hell out.

when Berdych talks, he sounds just like Ivan Lendl. Must be the Czech accent :)

The size of his thighs?

Lol maybe, I dunno. Mostly the attitude, I feel like he never shows any respect whatsoever, whether he wins or loses. He just always seems angry and - dare I say it? - arrogant.

I'm ambivalent towards Lendl, being too young to have experienced that era.

What are you saying here? You mean the only way the goat can win is if rafa and joker are gone?

How can Roger beat Nadal or Djokovic if they don't make it far enough into the tournament genius? Also didn't Roger just beat Nadal in IW?

When was the last time fed made it to a major final genius? Rafa and joker sure made it far enough at the AO. Where was your hero at in that tournament? Oh thats right he cannot make it to a major final anymore since there is some real competition these days, not like his heyday when he was pounding on his favorite pigeons. He did make it to the FO final last year, but just to take another beating from rafa.

First Federer will have to beat J. Tipsarevic, I seen the first set and then to work,, J. Tipsarevic played like a man on fire- blazing serves and forehand winners, Most people here seen the blue clay is more slippery than the red clay,,however, the Madrid Heat-climate was another factor that took a toll on the top 2 players,Federer is a man on a mission to get ATP no 2 slot.
The Only Question left is who wants it more,,

What's extremely funny to me is the fact that if Tipsarevic beats Federer, you can bet legions of posters will join Nadal and Djokovic in their "whining" about the court surface after excoriating the two only hours ago.

No, they won't. I won't that's for sure. I like a changeup. Tennis NEEDS a changeup. The surface specialists seem to have gone extinct. A surprise or two would be great for tennis.

He's saying that you need some basaltic crystals and Lindt. It is known to improve reading comprehension.

Last time I checked, Madrid was not a major tournament. It is a MS 1000 tournament, and Federer has been winning a few of them lately. Basically, Nadal and Djoker have not always kept up their end of the bargain in the smaller tournaments. cc0509 is correct; Don't just blow hot air about majors just because that is what's cooking in your mind. Stay on topic.

Honestly, I don't care.

He's already provided the most spectacular and beautiful play.

+1. This guy gets it.

Well, you're not speaking for me, that's for sure. Much is made about the footing and grip on the surface, but the effect of that is that the surface rewards shotmakers and proactice strategists over defenders who feed on the mistakes of their opponents. Whoever wins on this surface will have employed tactics that have gone unrewarded in this era of homogenization of surfaces, and that is quite acceptable to me.

I agree. I just doubt most people will share our opinion when it impacts our favourites, which are generally the top players and who have benefited the most from surface homogenization.
