Djokovic just had his Sampras USO 2002 moment

He may end being the number 1 of 2018 second half, if rankings had that record.
He is too far behind from Rafa to end as YE#1 though.
Wouldn't say so. Nadal only has about 6K points in the race, Djokovic could easily pass him during the summer HC season (especially if he wins the USO with Nadal not making the final).

And we know the stark difference between Djokovic and Nadal indoors. I think he could overtake him by November at the very least.

@Meles may need to rethink his position. :D
He would cease to be @Meles then. :)
My current position is this thread greatly under rates this Djokovic win as its clear if he wants it he can win more slams. Sampras summoned the last gasp of greatness for the 2002 US Open.

And of course the genetic freak is partially tongue and cheek.

Zedrot will be a new problem for Nole to deal with and he was indeed a genetic freak in Madrid only facing one break point for the event.:p

@Poisoned Slice shot me the Freakzilla image above. @Hitman likes, no?

Zed needs to get even with Ernests Gulbis for fracturing his face. :p

I remember all this talk from some after Djokovic returned back from injury at AO, and couldn't get past fourth round, that he is not like Federer and Nadal, that he can just come back and win slams after absence...Six months back, and he is Wimbledon champion, having gone through in form Edmund, in form Nishikori and in form Nadal. Sure it look him an extra month or two, but he did it. :);)

This.
He was simply too good not to come back to Slam winning form.
He was also motivated by the Fedal resurgence, and vowed to do exactly the same thing.
Most did not think it would be this quick, but he has surprised everyone, including himself.
And now he even has Pistol Pete in his sights as well!

When Fed was taken out by Anderson, I felt the pineapple trophy is Novak's. Nadal really surprised me by raising his game on grass to a new level and playing his heart out in the SF.
I feel sorry for Nadal, who was again so close to Federer yet again got suckerpunched by Novak.
My hope for the next 5 GSs:
USO 18 Nadal
AO 19 Novak
FO 19 Nadal
WB 19 Novak
USO 19 Novak

Fed had the same moment at Wimby 2012, but kept going and had another one of those moments at AO 2017.

Rafa had his 'Pete' moment at RG 2017 and kept going.

I think Djoker will do the same. For some reason these guys all seem to have better longevity than Pete. Perhaps it is the fact that they are spurring each other on. Pete had Andre but Andre wasn't challenging or thretening his slam record.

My take: the wife saw him humbled and humiliated, decided he’d paid the price for his transgressions.... and forgave him. He’s now able to concentrate on his training and tennis and not worry about that. As others said in other threads, it’s probably only a matter of time until he’s #1 again. As long as he doesn’t mess up again.....
