I just hope this loss won't crush him mentally and fuel him instead for AO 2022.

Is he guaranteed to end the year as #1 ?
Off course not! If anything it's Medvedev, who thanks to this win closing n on Novak rapidly in ATP race rankings! Now the difference is something like 2000 pts...this means Djokovic has to put some effort in order to finsh first! And Medvedev and Tsitsipas have to choke too...

Not to be, but at least he gave us the opportunity to watch someone at least play for the grand slam.

I wasn't alive to see Laver play for it, or anyone else. So this was a unique experience for me to watch as a tennis fan, regardless of the outcome. Novak's had a great year, probably more than even he was expecting.

The good thing for Novak is...the pressure is finally off. He can just play each slam as it comes. He must have been carrying a crazy amount of it after Wimbledon.
No pressure on him now. There’s nothing left for him to prove anymore and same for fed and Rafa too. The next gen were bound to breakthrough soon and I very happy for meddy.

Djoko fulfilled his main mission in catching fedal in slams. Anything else is just a bonus. I feel now though the changing of the guard will finally happen which is expected especially on hard courts. Novak will have big chances still at Wimbledon though if he fit and motivated.

Novak is still a pretty clear favourite in Australia going forward IMO. There's a reason why each and every next-gen breakthrough has happened at the end of the season at both the US Open and Year End Championships. Too much wear and tear has been accumulated at that stage in the season for the older guys to produce their best level, especially in this particular case with Novak coming off a 3 slam year where he was under tremendous mental as well as physical stress. As he said in press the pressure of the CYGS is finally off and he can come back refreshed next year for another big push in the slams. Obviously I am under no illusions that its going to get more and more difficult for Djokovic moving forward but I still feel he has a good few strong slam runs left in him.

You make good points but I think meddy and Zverev believe they are Novak’s equals now or better. If he has to beat these guys back to back at Australia it will be very tough.

These guys are in their prime years and very good on hard courts. Novak needs better luck with the draw. As for Wimbledon though he has higher chances because his grass level is high and the field is weaker in grass.

Yeah I think a lot of it is going to be draw dependent moving forward considering Novak's age. I do feel that if you reverse the draws of the finalists at this US Open Djokovic probably ends up taking the trophy home. Berrettini, Zverev and Medvedev in succession at the end of a gruelling season is a lot to ask of Novak at this stage.

Disappointed as a fan, but you cannot win everything. Age is not on his side, but he threw everything he had all the way to the finals. Remarkable achievement my man! We are with you win or lose.

time waits for no man. Djokovic is no exception. Amazing season with 3 titles! Nothing to snooze at.

Yeah I agree and it will be the same for Australia too. Still it will be interesting to see the big 3 motivation going forward. How much do they want to push their bodies against the younger guys? At some point they will be content and happy to move on from tennis to do other things. The motivation eventually will go and it will get tougher physically and mentally for the big 3.

Was flat...All those lost sets left right and xenter took a toll eventually. But why dont we have 2 days between semis and finals?? Have been saying since years..Final is a showpiece, you need to give ample time for the finalists..

Maybe this would have been a different match had he broken at the beginning of 2nd set.. Am I the only one who felt Medvedev hardly played anything special..Novak just gifted him a grand Slam..Similar to Roland Garos 2020 gift to Nadal..

Eventually all those idiots costed him a grand slam.Ruune, Nishikori,Brooksby..

Djokovic played exactly like how he played RG 2020 .

He tried to end points quickly and made so many unforced errors .
Djoker was impatient the entire match .

Meddy played like he normally does ,but Djoker didn't want any rallies .

Hopefully , he recovers well and returns to win AO 22 ..

Crowds support is overrated in Tennis..Hence proved..This is not a davis cup or a team tournament that they are going to lift up your game a level..

All those abusive and disrespectful crowd meant zilch to Novak..Today he got the crowd support, what difference it made??

This has been a perfect year. Only thing I needed was beating Nadal in RG, he went a step further and won the title. Then went undefeated in USOpen finals. Losing to Either Zverev or Medvedev was never a problem for me. Losing to anyone else was going to be really awkward after the year he had. So absolutely no regrets today. He already won the biggest match of the year in Paris.

Crowd support played a massive role on the WTA side this year… and for Alcaraz too.

Novak should absolutely skip IW, he needs the rest and geographically it doesn't make much sense at all.

But if Daniil wins IW he should play Vienna and Paris. If he won both (IF) he could even skip WTF with YE locked up. Otherwise if he wants to press his luck he could still get it by doing well at Paris and WTF.

Novak's body does prioritize over year end. Let's see how he feels. He has to take care of that elbow and shoulder which caused issues in 2016.

Our boy didn't make it unfortunately. I don't have any strong feelings about it, just wish he put up a bit more of a fight. It makes you wonder would a bit more balanced draw change anything, but I guess the better player won. It seems the pressure was just too much and sometimes things don't go your way.

Looking at the big picture, it's been a dream season nontheless. A huge 3-slam deficit has been bridged. It's an uphill battle from here for a 34 year old. If anything works in his favor, the pressure should be mostly off.

One thing i learned from Djokovic all these years is that it's not about what you lose, but what you win. I'm sure more big titles await somewhere in the future. We still haven't seen the last of him on the big stage.

You can't win them all. He will have more chances for 21. Next goal is the record breaking 7th YE #1. Here's hoping he will be able to hold off Medvedev this year!

Novak was clearly gassed against Daniil and Daniil really was not doing anything special. Both had many UFEs.
Beating the trio of Matteo-Sasha-Daniil on Hard was a tall ask TBH.

But the beating he got From Rafa was Differrent.
Rafa was playing unreal. Rafa had just 3 UFEs and 4 UFEs in the first and second set. How was he supposed to beat Rafa!
15 UFEs in 3 sets averaging 5 in a set.
It was like AO2019 Final where Novak had me only 9 UFEs against Rafa:eek:

Not surprised by the result in the big picture. Playing Tokyo was such a terrible decision. He didn't only lose precious time to recover mentally-emotionally-physically, but his aura at the absolute top of ATP achieved by winning the AO and the Channel Slam. WB-Cincy-USO would likely have created better result. But I don't feel sorry for Novak since he made the tradeoff himself.

I do feel sorry for Nadal, who couldn't play due to injury and IMHO missed a great opportunity at USO.

Maybe Djokovic, the strongest mental player ever, could ignore crowd support, but most players can't. Crowd support probably got to Medvedev some in the third set. I was in Ashe when Alcaraz beat Tsitsipas and the crowd practically willed Alcaraz over the finish line there. You often can't tell how loud the crowd is on tv because the mikes are not meant to pick them up too much or you couldn't hear the commentators. When you're there in person, it's crazy.

Agree that playing the Olympics was really bad decision. It was a very different environment of what he usually has on tour. Different team, different coach, different trainer. Nobody can switch from one team to another and switch back in a short amount of time and have good result.

If he has the will to do another CYGS run, say if he wins the first 3 legs like this year, he will have to treat the US Open as seriously as he did for this year FO. There are many good hard court players who can beat him and if he doesn't compete with them often, he will not have a clear idea at what level they are. Yesterday's US Open final was the first time Novak and Daniil met after the AO final early this year and the game plan and the level of Daniil brought in the match totally surprised Novak and beat him fair and square.

The year Laver won it was my first exposure to tennis in 1969 I still lived in Scotland at that time and Wimbledon was a big deal. I went to Wimby the following year with my brother and we were lucky enough to meet Laver who was practicing with Tony Roche. I have their autographs. If my home ever catches fire it’s one of the first things I will take with me.

Its so tragic, just 2 days ago, he was bossing probably the best player on Hard courts now, Sascha and now this. Cant quite believe what had happened.

This wasnt because of fitness. This was Novaks Head which was spining all match long. Any other Major he would have creamed Med who had actualy pretty average to bad stats . That said im happy that Daniil was the one who did it and that he finaly got his first slam.
It was both. Afterward Novak himself said that his legs weren't all there. He had the far harder draw, spent 5+ more hours on court than Medvedev and ran a dozen miles more in his matches. Add the pressure of winning a Grand Slam, which clearly affected Novak's nerves, and all credit to Medvedev for playing really well and very strategically, and you get Djokovic losing in straights.

At the US Open final he didn't have any chance. He would probably win an Olympic gold if he didn't play doubles. 6th WTF and the record 37th masters is all that matters now.

My only gripe at the US open was this: He gifted far too many sets in earlier rounds. I know that Novak can recover physically. but the more sets you donate, the harder is the recovery process. Even if you are a super man, you reserve your very best for the later stages of the slam. You don't burn yourself out in R1-R4 where you should be smart enough to shut the door on your opponent with ease. Also he beat the best player Zverev in route to the finals only to lose out to a boring pusher.

i feel like he played average tennis in earlier rounds and it caught up with him(lack of practice or rust?). He was clearly gassed out and he told it in the presser too. He tried his best, but didn't have the legs. He is getting old and he needs to be smart about how he wants to dispose off low ranked players. He needs to take a leaf out of Federer's Wimbledon 2014 and 2015 runs at the same age. Easier said than done.

Regardless , phenomenal achievement to win 3 slams at the age of 34 and being on the door step of CYGS.

You can't win it all. It's ok. Take positives and try harder next time. But he needs to solve the Medvedev puzzle to have a fair chance in next few slams. Otherwise it's case closed.

Beating an injured Nadal is not such a big deal.
