Is Djokovic losing the number one ranking this year a foregone conclusion? Realistically, until when will he lose it this year?

Djokovic is guaranteed to keep the number one ranking until Shanghai. Beyond that it depends on his and Nadal's results.

If Nadal doesn't play during the Asian swing:

Djokovic would keep the number one ranking until Bercy with a win in Tokyo.
If he doesn't play Tokyo, he would keep the number one ranking until Bercy if he reaches the Shanghai final.
If he plays and loses in Tokyo, he would keep the number one ranking until Bercy if he reaches the Shanghai semifinal.

Should Djokovic skip Tokyo and reach the Shanghai semifinal, he and Nadal would have the same amount of points. And I believe that's when the guy with more points at Slams gets the higher ranking, and that guy now is Nadal.

So Djokovic will hit 272 weeks guaranteed, but beyond that he will have to earn it...

Seen Nole today in Belgrade at the club. By the time I finished my training he was already done so I didn't manage to take a video of him on court. It will probably be posted on djokornole youtube anyway. I've noticed Gebhard Phil-Gritch present in his team, but don't know if he's fully back. Heard he's going to have a training session again tomorrow, if it doesn't rain.

I like Nadal and wouldn't mind seeing him back at No. 1 but I really want Djokovic to get the weeks at No.1 record! :)

I would think his main goal is catching Fed/Rafa in slams, if he reaches that goal he will pass Fed at weeks at number one. So I wouldn't think there is any reason to push unless he is 100% healthy.

Good point, agreed! But there's the possibility that you can win slams and not be No. 1 as Nadal is doing :)

except if he is obsessed with number of years ending #1 position
That would be a weird thing to be obsessed with. I guess it just depends, as some think it is a huge deal, but I can't even tell you how many Rafa or Fed have.

I see it like the CYGS vs NCYGS in that I don't see a huge difference in the calendar year vs 52 random weeks. They both are one year and both cover all tourneys. So that is why I value weeks at 1 vs years ends at 1.

I read on some source, quoting a Serbian mass media, that Novak had pain free (shoulder) trainings this week.
Before this he didn't train, and was busy with recovery/
so, he said that he will decide during this week if he will play Tokyo

Troicki: Novak looked phenomenal from the first until the last point

The Serbian tennis player Viktor Troicki spoke about the training he had with Novak Djokovic.

Troicki, who also had plenty injury problems this year, trained with Novak prior to the return of the best player in the world on the court.

Djokovic retired in the 4th round of US Open against Stan Wawrinka due to the shoulder injury, but he will return at the end of September in Tokyo.

"He didn't play since the US Open, on Monday he had his first training in more than three weeks, but it was super. Usually when you don't play tennis for even ten days you lose the feeling, but he played phenomenal from the first until the last point. He wasn't missing", said Troicki.

The former world number 12 believes that Novak benefited from the little break.

"I think he enjoyed the break and that he will be ready for the next tournaments", Troicki is clear.

In Tokyo, which will be held from 30th of September until the 6th of October, Novak will try to win that 500 series tournament for the first time.

...

Hopefully Viktor is right, and more importantly that Novak's shoulder problem won't resurface...

While waiting for Novak's return, I wanted to share some things he achieved throughout his career that may never be broken or not in a near future at least.

Novak Djokovic has established himself as one of the top tennis stars over the last decade.
Novak Djokovic has truly worked hard to establish himself as one of the top three tennis stars in of the Open era alongside Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal. The 16-time Grand Slam title winner was the first Serbian player to be ranked at number one in the ATP rankings and is the first player from his country to win a major Grand Slam title. After suffering an injury setback in 2017, Djokovic made his return to the international stage the following year. After struggling at the start, the Serbian ace found his rhythm after winning his seventh Australian Open title.

Highest ATP rating points
Novak Djokovic was at his peak during the 2015-16 ATP season. That was the year when critics and tennis lovers truly started including the Serbian as one of the greatest players to have ever played the game. Novak Djokovic created history after winning the French Open in 2016 when he accrued 16,950 points, the highest number of points in ATP history. In doing so, Djokovic became the first player in the Open Era to have accumulated on points tally, it was more than the combined sum of the second and third-ranked players on the ATP list.

Winner of all four Grand Slams on three different surfaces
Since the start of Open era of tennis in 1973, no player (male or female) has managed to hold all four Grand Slam titles at the same time. However, Novak Djokovic created a new record by achieving that feat after winning the Roland Garros in 2016 and seemed invincible from the start of 2015 right up-to to the Roland Garros in 2016. In addition to that, Novak Djokovic became the only man in tennis history to hold all four Grand Slams on three different surfaces at once. Novak Djokovic beat the top-10 ranked players a jaw-dropping 31 times in a single season.

15 straight finals
Novak Djokovic was almost invincible from the start of 2015 up to Roland Garros in 2016. The Serb featured in 15 finals of the 16 tournaments he played in during that period. Djokovic ended on the winning side on 11 occasions. He also went on and won the season-ending ATP Finals which was held in London.

Winner of all nine Masters tournaments
Novak Djokovic has not only won all four Grand Slams but also won a record six ATP Masters 1000 titles. The Serb became the first player in the 28-year history of the ATP Masters 1000s to win all nine elite tournaments. He did so by beating Roger Federer at the Western and Southern Open in Cincinnati in 2018. The Cincinnati Masters had eluded Djokovic for quite a few years. He had finished a runner-up there on five different occasions before he finally tasted success in 2018.

Incredible. (y)
Found this picture, I think it was in Madrid, gotta say he looks really cute here.:p

Could be a good thing. People complained when he looked too thin.

People complain all the time lol. Won Wimbledon and AO when he was really thin. Won Wimbledon and USO last year when he was less thin. As long as he’s thinner than his pre-2010 self, it’s fine.

It's a good thing Nole decided on Japan; China's a monster with players fit for a high end Masters! Coric being the 2nd seed behind Djokovic should be just a little bit of a test as he shouldn't exert himself too much on his comeback! Not sure he should test himself in Shanghai so soon; maybe warm up in Vienna before, then finish with WTF/YEC!

Djokovic to play Popyrin in the first round tomorrow.

Struff who was supposed to be his second round opponent unexpectedly lost to a local wildcard Soeda.

If he is ready to play, it should be smooth sailing into the quarterfinal where Pouille or Nishioka will await.

The quarterfinal below Novak's is stacked. Cilic, Chung, Shapovalov, Goffin... Should Novak reach the semifinal, he will most likely face one of these guys.
Why only a few ?
Was referring only to his ongoing streak, Nadal is likely to take over soon. Down the road I imagine Djokovic will manage to be the top guy again from time to time...
