Djokovic overcame the odds once again

lol TTW gonna TTW (for the last few; I can somewhat understand others)

I’m curious, though. What did the betting odds look like? For this recent final, weren’t the bookies leaning Medvedev or something? I don’t keep up with a lot of this stuff.

The betting sites had Djokovic the favourite for the final. Medvedev was the underdog. So, Djokovic never overcame the odds.

The same people that said those players would have beaten Djokovic, after the finals said those opponents were trash...

Looks that their pre-final eye test didn't work very well.

It's almost like it's harder to play against Djokovic than other players.

Go figure!

Check how often Nadal has been not seeded #1 at RG. It's not exactly the same, but it's similar. I never thought anyone else was the favorite this year at the AO until the injury, and I figured that if Novak was able to move well, he'd beat Med. I just didn't expect it to be that lopsided.

Let me solve that for you: Federer is always the favorite because almost everyone wants him to win, not because almost everyone thinks he is going to win.

What you are saying is insulting for TTW posters implying that they are biased emotionally immature individuals who are incapable to think rationally. The question in these polls is not "who do you wish to win", but "who will win".

Since when is TTW a reference for betting odds lol? Aside from Wimbledon 2014, Djokovic was probably the favorite in the books going into all those matches.
fed might also have been 2015 favorite also, almost all pundits were in awe after dismantling Murray in SF

It's not even similar ;)

imagine using "fed won the ttw poll hahaha how delusional you were" as some kind of ammunition for lame repetitive arguments

those polls are all just "who are you a fan of". everyone knows that. move on

Look. This is not overcoming the odds. Being favorite or not is just perception. Anyway Djoker is more dangerous when not considered favorite.

The real odds he had to overcome are
- the abdominal injury and paying with it and winning in AO 21
- the dehydration in AO 20

Fed is always favourite at Wimby. Every Wimby where Fed participated and Nole won is against the odds.

Where I am, the betting lines started at having them dead even. Obviously anyone with a shred of tennis knowledge hammered bets on Djokovic, so the odds went down for him to make him favourite.

You never know whether the person who voted in that poll went with the head or the heart. But you know it was delusion either way lol. Other than 2014 Wimbledon I never doubted a win in any of those matches, prior or during them.

My apologies to everybody for the insults.

Kind of hard to believe re: 2013 RG, even this year at the Djokovic Open, Nadal led just 54-46 in the poll. Guaranteed Djokovic would have led if the roof closure was known in advance.
Nadal was favorite before tsistispas match. Once Novak went 5 with Tsits Nads became the extreme favorite to win.

Honestly the hype Medvedev was getting before the final was ridiculous. I tried to stay far away from THAT thread. At least some of the past matches Vs Federer it made sense but betting against Djokovic at the Australian open vs Medvedev was a whole new level of delusion

People say dumb **** when they're disappointed. None of those finalists were trash in those tournaments. I'm a fan of both Med and Fed and both of them were great and in an incredible form, same with Tsonga. I can totally understand why they were seen as favorites/slight favorites in those finals.

Medvedev alone tougher than any opponent Fed faced in 04-07 apart from Nads. I wonder what the odds were for the zverev match vs Nole AO21?
Mostly because Nole is 34 and had a muscle tear, while Fed was at his very best. Meddy boy wouldn't have those high odds against peak Djokovic.

Zverev line moved from 2.5 when it opened to 2.35 just before the match. But at this stage Novak was still struggling with injury and handn't looked sharp vs Raonic.

I don't really think it's the greatest metric of how good the rival was. I think it's a metric for how wrongly people estimated Medvedev. Like I'm sure Roddick was 3.5 or 4.0 in the 2004 Wimbledon final, but that was one helluva match. And 2007 USO there's no way Djokovic isn't miles better than Medvedev now, it's just that Federer was dispatching everyone easily left right and centre.

Not really, check the match thread, tons of Djokovic hype and he 100% would have been the clear favorite with a closed roof. When the roof closure was announced, Nadal fans were devastated.

There has been much rewriting history. I thought Nadal had no chance against Djokovic on cold indoor clay?
