"The Serbia Open tennis tournament in Belgrade will no longer feature on the ATP World Tour calendar following the decision by the organisers to cease the tournament's operations," the ATP men's tour said.

Seems a shame that a country that currently has the #1 tennis player in the world in Novak Djokovic and has produced other top players like Janko Tipsarevic and former champions like Ana Ivanovic will now no longer have an ATP recognised tennis tournament!

You would have thought the success of players like the above would have increased demands for more tennis tournaments in Serbia, not less!

Lousy economy there, no sponsors. Maybe the point here is that having a world champion tennis player in the family doesn't mean you know anything about organizing and successfully running a sports event. These things don't succeed without expertise.

Very true. But I would have thought that the international success of Serbian tennis stars in recent years would have stimulated an expanding knowledge of the game and an interest in organising tournaments there at least for the benefit of future budding Serbian tennis stars!

Djokovic and co have virtually been putting Serbia on the map in recent years and helping to counter the negative legacy of the Balkan wars. And this is how they are repaid??

Exactly!

Serbia has alot of other things to worry about....

Agreed. Eeyore and his family are so arrogant that they can't seem to grasp this basic point. Good riddance to a lousy tournament run by lousy people.

Clarky, I have good news for you. Djokovic seems to broke up with his girlfriend, that's your chance :)

I don't think he ditched the teenybopper seal. Although he looks much happier and animated around Ana Ivanovic. But I don't think she thinks of him as a prospect...

To be fair to clarky though, now I rewatched the AO highlights she DOES look like a clapping seal...did they really break up? Was she present in London WTF?
