Before the conference, we got a live response on Facebook.

"Hello everyone, hello from Belgrade, Serbia. I have a little announcement to make. Just wanted to share news with you. After obviously carrying for a year and a half the injury that has culminated in the last couple of months I have made a decision to not play any tournaments for the rest of 2017"

The world number 4 Novak Djokovic decided to end his season due to the elbow injury. He won't be having a surgery, he'll have a natural recovery, resting is a priority.

Already in London he said that surgery isn't a solution, which was confirmed to him by several specialists, which advised him to only rest, so he won't work with the racket for few months. He is expected on the court on the first day of 2018 season.

"Unfortunately this is the decision that had to be made. Wimbledon was probably the toughest tournament for me in terms of feeling the pain that has escalated. I have consulted many doctors and specialists and various people from both ends of the medicine in the last 12-15 months and especially last couple of months where I felt that injury is getting worse and they all agree that I need rest, that I need time. This is one of those injuries where nothing can really help instantly, you just have to allow natural rehabilitation to take its course. It will take a couple of months at least without the racket and then I am hoping that I can start after that to train and I am looking forward to be honest to build my body, my game, my team as well"

Novak announced that he will continue to work with Andre Agassi.

"I am happy to share that Andre Agassi is committed to stay with me next year so I want to thank Andre for being this year with me and obviously sharing his experience, his wisdom and I am looking forward to get back to practice courts with him and having him in the box for any big tournament.

Djokovic said that he will spend a lot of time in the following months with his family, especially now that he and Jelena are expecting a second child.

"Professionally this obviously wasn't an easy decision for me, but I am trying to look everything from the positive side and I believe that obviously everything in life happens for a reason. So I'll use this time as best as I can to spend quality time with my family. In about month-month and a half time hopefully Jelena and I with God's help will become parents again, so I will obviously take this time to heal, to do all the different suggested methods of rehabilitation and healing processes so I can get back on the court ASAP"

The winner of 12 Grand Slam titles spoke about how he is grateful for all of his great success and health, also mentioning that he is nowhere near the retirement.

"I just want to say that I am very grateful, and that's probably the strongest emotion I am feeling lately even though as I said professionally this isn't an easy decision, it's not an easy thing to swallow. I have never faced this particular situation before in my life, I have never skipped a Grand Slam and probably played 90% of the Masters 1000 series events and I was blessed to have lots of success and I am very grateful for that. But I am also grateful that I kept my body healthy throughout the years, I haven't had too many injuries, especially no big injuries like this that would keep me away from the Tour for longer than a month-month and a half. So it's a completely new experience for me, new circumstances but I am trying to look from a brighter side, I have time where I can dedicate myself to healing, building up my body and strength and obviously focusing on certain aspects and elements of my game that I really never had any time to work on and now I have time to perfect it to build a foundation for the next 5 years or more, God knows. I really want to play professional tennis for many years to come"

At the end of his video he thanked his fans and all the other people that supported him in recent times that weren't easy.

"I want to say big thanks to all of you for your support in the last couple of months, but not just the last couple of months but throughout my entire career you've been with me and I thought before going out to the press conference I wanted to share that with you personally. Thank you really for great support and love that you've been sending me and I've been feeling as well that got me through times and tough moments so many times in my life and I am sure you will be the same this time. Of course I want to thank all the people that have been there with me in the last couple of months that haven't been easy, my family, my team ,my friends and also my sponsors that I am proud to say stayed with me and of course I am very grateful because obviously it's not easy to know that your player will not be performing for six months but they are there and our relationship is built on and off the court so I am very grateful for that. So thank you very very much, I send you big kiss and big hug from Belgrade. Life is beautiful guys. Sending you lots of love"

It was mostly the same or similar statements in the press conference, while the things Novak added are:

-Mario Ancic is a priority for the second coach role. Novak has some other candidates but he will not call any of them until Mario makes a decision.
-Djokovic's return is scheduled for the first week of 2018, but it's still not decided which tournament he will play.
-The injury appeared in autumn 2015, since then Djokovic played most of the tournaments under medication.
-Probably the main cause of it was overwork, but Djokovic has no regrets and is proud of all of his achievements in the last several years.
-It wouldn't have been a bad idea if he took this kind of a break after last year's Wimbledon but Novak just couldn't have done that in the Olympic year.
-Djokovic took time to congratulate Federer and Nadal on their achievements this season, highlighting the Swiss' Wimbledon triumph, saying he is more lucky than unlucky to be competing with them because they pushed him to become better, he is thankful to them
-After finally winning Roland Garros he felt empty, flat, but the motivation returned in the last 3-4 months
-He can't wait to get back on the court, he loves tennis, he loves playing it with anyone, from his family members and friends to his biggest tennis rivals, he enjoys being on the court, any surface, any time
-The end isn't near

2) no surgery, natural recovery
3) expected to come back on the first day of the 2018 season (don't know which tournament yet)

As always, I am in full support of any player that is looking out for his long-term health and happiness. Injuries are never wanted, they're never fun. But sounds like his attitude is awesome and he'll be raring to get back to winning ways in 2018. Best of luck to him.

Is it Golfer's elbow? What's the nature of the injury?

I think a doctor at one point mentioned it's a bone bruise? kind of weird to go out of ur way to hold a press conference and doesn't seem to go into specifics about the injury? but I guess that's djokovic for you....

Sounds great and fans now know the main reason for Nole's drop in level. With a sound arm and such a hiatus, even Peakovic might return with renewed dedication.

Yeah, only good can come out of this.
Now we know Novak suffered from mental AND physical problems throughout the year.
Despite that he was fairly consistent still, which is remarkable.

It's good that hes taking a long break to recover, everytime Federer comes out of a break he seems to play twice as better lol

An extraordinarily long winded way of saying he's taking time off due to an elbow injury and will be back coached by Agassi next year.

if the injury was his only problem I think a strong comeback would be probable. but like someone else said he had some motivational & personal problems, and fired his whole team this year so I think there is/was more to it than just this injury so his circumstances seem different than rogers & rafas time off...

Taken at face value this means he dominated the field completely for 9 months or so while being injured and playing on medication.

What a warrior. That's even better than the golden injured rusty peak Bull:eek::eek::eek:

Best of luck with his recovery.

Why lmao?
19 slams in the bag and a possible 20th on the way this year.

Nole can have the spoils 2018 onward.
I think you misconstrued. Not that fed fans are angry about maybe getting blocked again from winning big titles. It's was more about. Wtf is this crud 'm sick of reading this and had enough. I'm pissed get the ef outa here! Fed fans can be ornery :p

If it is that bad, it is the only sensible decision.

The man is deluding himself and his fanboys.

The man shall never again contend for slam titles.

The man should retire.

So be it.

Well there's one positive, at least Agassi is sticking with it. I was worried that this injury break was going to waste the coaching opportunity Djokovic had there.

I feel for Djokovic's lack of success this past year, but I'm so glad that Pepe doesn't get to go around saying to students at his academy that he "coached Djokovic to 'x' grand slams"

I don't think time off will help him like how it helped Federer.
I don't either. He can heal whatever ails his body, but not his mind or his motivation. Fed has always loved the game, the travel and the love he gets everywhere. McEnroe has always said, "I never knew another pro who loved it like Roger does." Nadal has had tons of physical issues, but never loss of interest or motivation. Neither ever went through a sudden crisis or rankings plummet. The closest was Nadal's mini crisis when his parents separated but he bounced back quickly.

The injury? The elbow injury? What about it? Nothing specifically on what the problem is? Chronic inflammation? Maybe I missed it? Speculation? That's what we do best here!

Very valid points. Also, Nole's situation is a bit different cause he'd won all 4 GS in a row and that's something that neither Roger or Rafa got to experience.

Last I heard was bone bruise. Skeptical. When he called the trainer he had him rubbing- not sure how that does anything to the bone.

I'm still convinced this is all about his offcourt drama that started at Wimbledon 2016...
