Djokovic to play Indian Wells in October

I really hope he is going to play. Tournaments are a lot more interesting when all top players who are healthy are there. It seems no one who can hold a racket is missing IW.

Hold your horses. He hasn't confirmed it. My guess is that he likely withdraws.
Medvedev also said it's IMPOSSIBLE for him to get YE#1 from Novak.
So Novak's YE#1 is safe whether the plays or not.
if a player gets to the finals of all 4 slams and wins 3 of them,
how could you not finish #1? i know its apparently mathematically
possible but it shouldnt be lol

Well Djokovic has played Monte Carlo, Rome, and… no other Masters. In fact he didn’t even play a 500 level tournament yet. Olympics don’t count for any ATP points.

Compared to Med who has won the ATP Cup, AO finalist won a 250 in March, played Miami, each Clay Masters, won 250 in Mallorca, then won Canada, SF in Cincy, and won US Open. Djokovic has played 8 official ATP singles tournaments all year, lol.

not that far fetched, it’s more down to Djokovic’s really light schedule this year. But still Med has to basically win IW, Paris, and WTF to be YE #1 at this point.

Me too. He must stop Medvedev ending the year as number 1. It would be an absolute disaster if Medvedev ended the year as number 1 when he has 1 slam to Djokovic's 3 + 1 final.
Out of interest what happens if chasing No.1 like in 2016 costs him he AO? Which is more disastrous?
The guy is mentally spent. He needs he rest of season off. He plays a full schedule i can almost be certain he does not win a slam in 2022.
I hope he plays all events this season but i assume he will call it a day now until January

He may not have won that CYGS but needs to go get that 7th YE#1. Glad to hear he's playing, and it's good way to put the USO behind him.

So Indian Wells promotes Djokovic's return by posting a boring 31 shot baseline to baseline rally?

No wonder people are losing interest...
He doesn’t really have any highlights other than these. He has great technique, technical mastery, but is boring to watch.

It is definitely a matter of personal taste. I love watching him play. He has a lot more than just a baseline exchange skills. Then again, I like watching most of the players, except the serve bots playing each other ;).

Well he should probably skip it in that case. Australian Open is quite a while away though.

I think he's trying to do the minimum to get YE#1. I don't know many matches he needs to win for that. Would a semi final in IW be sufficient? I think that's doable. Then take the year off.

This is a chance for him to break the tie 36 masters with Nadal, break the tie YE #1 with Sampras, solve Med's game as he was unable to do so at the US Open.

It depends on Medvedev too. Including IW, Medvedev can get a maximum of 3750 points (IW, Moscow/St. Pete, Paris, Turin). It's highly unlikely he gets all those though. The current gap is 1990 so Medvedev sort of needs to win Turin and at least one of IW and Paris to have a chance. In any case, Djokovic doesn't have to do a ton to hold on to YE#1, most likely a total of 1000 points the rest of the season will be more than enough, although I'm theory he needs over 1760 to ensure it

Not only does he have the chance to break the tie with Sampras for most year ending number ones, and the tie with Nadal for most masters, he also has a chance to break with tie with Federer for the most titles in Indian Wells, both at 5 each.

A win in Indian Wells means, that Djokovic will be the only one to have won each of the two sunshine masters Indian Wells and Miami titles 6 times each.

Independent of the year end number 1, just getting back on the court sooner rather than later is great news. And having been without even a deep run since 2016, now is as good time as any to do well there again.
