Novak Djokovic on Monday urged tennis authorities to overhaul the sport's anti-doping system, pointing to "inconsistencies" in cases involving top stars Jannik Sinner and Iga Swiatek and those of lower-ranked players.
World number one Sinner agreed to a three-month ban on Saturday, admitting "partial responsiblity" for mistakes by his team which led to him twice testing positive for traces of clostebol in March last year.

Sinner was facing a potential ban of two years after the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) appealed to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) against his initial exoneration by the International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA), announced in August.

In a surprising move, WADA withdrew its appeal and came to an agreement with Sinner to accept a three-month ban.

"There's a majority of the players that I've talked to in the locker room, not just in the last few days, but also last few months, that are not happy with the way this whole process has been handled," said Djokovic.

"A majority of the players don't feel that it's fair. A majority of the players feel like there is favouritism happening. It seems like, it appears that you can almost affect the outcome if you are a top player, if you have access to the top lawyers."

In contrast, the recently retired Simona Halep, a former world number one, was handed a four-year ban by the ITIA in 2022 after testing positive for the blood-boosting drug roxadustat.

She argued it was the result of a tainted supplement and successfully appealed to the Court of Arbitration for Sport, which reduced her suspension to nine months.

"Simona Halep and (Britain's) Tara Moore and some other players that are maybe less known that have been struggling to resolve their cases for years, or have gotten the ban for years," said Djokovic.

"There is so much inconsistencies between the cases."

Djokovic, who is returning to action this week at the Qatar Open for the first time since retiring injured from last month's Australian Open semi-finals, believes a change is needed.

"Right now it's a ripe time for us to really address the system, because the system and the structure obviously doesn't work (for) anti-doping, it's obvious," he said.

"I hope that in the next period of the near future that the governing bodies are going to come together, of our tours and the tennis ecosystem, and try to find a more effective way to deal with these processes.

"It's inconsistent, and it appears to be very unfair."

"If you are going to treat every case individually or independently, which is what's happening, then there's no consistency, then there is no transparency, and some cases are transparent, some are not," he continued.

"The problem is that right now there is a lack of trust generally from the tennis players, both male and female, towards WADA and ITIA, and the whole process."

It's hard to find an argument against Djokovic's critique other than to say that those in power want to retain their power to pull a rabbit out of the hat when it suits.
One argument against his is that it isn't proven that Sinner didn't intentionally do it as much as his claim is admitted to be plausible enough.

Sinner owned both Djoker and Meddy at Australian 2024.
But unlike the whiny Russian Meddy who remains very salty and bitter, The Djoker keeps it classy and does not attack the young Sinner.

Zverev chimes in too. He's in essence, called the ban a non-bank.

It takes an out of court settler to know what's up.

<< << This situation is strange. Either you did not commit any foul and you should not be suspended at all. Or you committed a foul for taking steroids, in which case 3 months is not a suspension.

so what should be the right punishment for non-intentional doping / contamination like in the Sinner case? 3 months too little for the bad boy Sinner? What is the right ban Nole?

Djokovic and his PTPA keeps pointing fingers but it looks to me an attack to the number 1 in the world rather than a serious discussion on doping etiquette and rules.

Djokovic obviously want his main rival out for as long as possible.

Well, it is easy for us to comment. But at his level he is not wrong to protect his interests. After all, Sinner has his number now and what is wrong to look for a little relief.

Oh dear Novak. Guess we can cross of Rome from his list of events ever again!
Whenever a player says 'i have spoken to lots of players in locker room' but doesnt say who it generally means they are talking utter sh*te. Funnily enough Kyrgios claimed loads of players were messaging him, which is odd as most of the locker room hate him lol.

I’m not suggesting Egg is not genuine; he seems like a generally nice and fair-minded guy when he isn’t browbeating young players that beat him or retiring from major events after losing the first set but for his PTPA to succeed he needs the top guys. Fedal initially killed his PTPA dream. :D Now he really needs Sinner and Charles the new top guys else the tennis big players will ignore his PTPA (which PTPA was supposed to be suing “tennis” as of AO 2025:rolleyes:). Carrot isn‘t likely to be into his PTPA if Egg is attacking him on any part of the ill-advised WADA witch hunt. The Carrot has been through enough and for almost a year. It’s time to move on.

Djoker believes the rules should apply equally to everyone. No one should be above the rules.

I wonder if he felt this while watching the 2022 AO on his 1985 CRT TV at Park Hotel.

Except in this example, the rules weren't applied. Djokovic had a valid exemption, confirmed the minister himself in the end. Tiley and the Australian government lied and abused the rules. Not a good example.

The PTPA is just another lobby group. Its dreams are limited by its power.

What the heck is Egg going on about. Every case does turn on its own facts. He must mean the sanctions? But the sanction for Carrot was zero. WADA appealing was what was somewhat unusual. Is he complaining about that. Is he complaining about the WADA agreement that resolved the case. How come he didn’t speak out when Brooksby‘s case resolution agreement was made? No details at all were released on that one. Only the existence of the agreement and the result.

Does Egg realize that the ”Tennis authorities” don’t make the rules. WADA makes the rules.

Does Egg think WADA pulls them out of thin air. It will be six years between major Code revisions when the 2027 Code is implemented and it takes years to develop the new Code including multiple rounds of drafting and input from the large number of WADA stakeholders of which tennis is but one.

Does Egg want another independent body to implement the WADA Code for tennis? Does Egg realize the ITIA was the new body not long ago? Does Egg not like the quality of the investigators? Do they need more of them? Should they get raises? Does Egg think the ITIA is on the take? WADA? Does Egg realize it was not the ITIA who both made the call on Carrot’s story or decided he has no fault but three independent arbitrators?

Egg is always prattling on about anti-doping “lack of transparency.” Back in August he complained about lack of transparency because Sinner tested positive in March but the public didn’t learn of it until just before the 2024 USO when the ITIA published the tennis tribunal decision. Because that is exactly how it’s supposed to work. They don‘t disclose a mere investigation because it’s unfair to do so and Egg’s call for “transparency“ not only made no sense the 2027 code is going further. At the request of stakeholders — and with the interest of athletes in mind not the nosy public — a decision of a first instance tribunal will not be disclosed if an athlete is found to have No Fault. You’ll never know they tested positive and you’ll never know they had a tribunal decision. Does Egg not approve because now would be the time to speak to WADA and explain your opinion.

Does Egg want tennis to leave the WADA system? That probably means no more tennis in the Olympics. Does he want the PTPA to set up a doping system. Please tell me what exactly Egg wants in specifics.

What tennis pros should be complaining about IMO is Carrot and Egg and other top players have the resources to mount an aggressive defense. The Carrot’s two provisional suspensions were appealed and lifted with lightening speed. And he had people advising him every step of the way. He had the ATP behind him, he had lawyers with contacts at ITIA and Sports Resolutions to make sure he received every possible consideration. Player ranked #700 would probably have been provisionally suspended before even mounting a defense. And be bankrupted putting up a full defense.

The Egg Affair is a classic. Good times.

Oz Govt may have lied at stages and abused its power but the only persons that broke rules were the Oz border officials who the Oz administrative law judge said did not follow their own rules when they denied Egg entry. The Minister had the legal power to act as hatchet man on behalf of the Oz Govt and prevent Egg from entering on pretty much any theory not deemed certifiably insane. The Oz court could only rubber stamp his decision. Whatever you think of the Egg Affair, Egg has principles and accepts the consequences of his choices unlike his more looney fans.

Personally I don’t care what they do but you’re not giving the #1 tennis player in the world and Raul‘s fav a significant ban under any scenario. That is an affront to tennis. And we won’t put up with it. So you can come up with whatever doping system you want so long as you keep that in mind. :giggle:

Joker could use some grooming tips.
Grooming is for fake people who want to appear different to how they actually look. Djokovic doesn't need to fix his hair or bandana every time before he serves a tennis ball. He doesn't need a hair transplant either. He's a real man.

Djokovic s points are all right. But top players have always got preferential treatment because they are in the limelight and they have lots of money.
That's why they get the lucrative scheduling in the tournaments and the organisers listen to them.
Didn't Djokovic demanded and got the second night match in 4R AO 21 to get maximum recovery time.
Or didn't he start taking the huge break after being 2 sets to love down to change momentum. When tipsy copied, he was brutalised from all corners.

It's not a equal tennis World and that's how it is

Why does he have to name the players that he talked to? Who does he owe it to? You?

Who says the whole locker room hates Kyrgios? Again you?

Zverev is yet another uninformed person who evidently does not know the principle of guilt.
Who cannot distinguish the different degrees of culpability in doping cases.

Someone who tells you that if someone is not guilty then he should not be disqualified, but if he is guilty then 3 months is not appropriate, really means that he is not at all aware of the legislation that he himself must comply with.

Let's realize how some even hang on the lips of the Zverev of the moment when he expresses an opinion on the issue.

They should halve all doping penalties. They seemed designed around the Olympic cycle and are not fit for purpose.

We can call Djokovic a doper here but not the twice-busted, now-banned doper one.
Another "twice" freak like this imbecile Australian... I accept every argument and even pure hatred but "twice" is just a sign of low intelligence. If they test him 100 times within a few days, he is 100 times busted?

I don't see the argument here. There could be any number of innocent reasons why the PTPA did not help Moore. In any event, Novak is making an argument here, that's all.

So PTPA helped Halep and not Moore? So now they are actually judging WADA for what they are doing themselves?

They simply ruined the sport. They disqualify Djokovic from GS for hitting lineswoman with the ball probably unintentionally whereas they keep Sinner playing multiple GS events under doping allegations just to disqualify him for 3 months not affecting any of the past or future GS. That is somehow unfair.

I don't see the argument here. There could be any number of innocent reasons why the PTPA did not help Moore. In any event, Novak is making an argument here, that's all.
And there could be a number of reasons why they let Sinner go no?

I think an association like PTPA should be careful with accusations like that.

I agree with Novak there should be more transparency.

If it wasn't a doping case, why treat it as a positive result? There needs to be a minimum level for a positive result. So often, the inadvertent use of off-the-shelf remedies for colds and allergies is seen as a doping case and punished, even though it couldn't have enhanced performance. Cilic was suspended immediately for taking something for a cold that his mum bought from the chemist, which is grossly unfair.

What Djokovic said make sense and I agree. What he is not saying is Sinner or Swiatek's should be banned for a year or more or everyone 3 months. Just be consistent. The issue is each case is very different so it cannot be consistent.

Why does he have to name the players that he talked to? Who does he owe it to? You?

Who says the whole locker room hates Kyrgios? Again you?
Lol how naive can you be. Its openly known Kyrgios is hated on both tours. If Djokovic is going to run his mouth then he needs the balls to back up what he is saying and name names.

Most stakeholders want and WADA Code is moving in 2027 toward more sanctions flexibility and potentially shorter sanctions. Chainz wants longer minimum sanctions.

Djokovic knows he can't beat him and Sinner owns his ass, so he is pushing for a longer ban so he may have some chances to win some more tournaments, lmao.... the salty tears are wonderful

Nothing wrong. Doper must be banned for two years. His slams must be taken away. It's very disgraceful for #1 player getting caught for doping and ending up with getting banned. Things get worse when you see he is using his position (got there thanks to doping!) to get away with minimum punishment. They are not taking his slams which is unfair for remaining competition.

Take his slams away and throw him out of tour for couple of years. Nothing less acceptable.
