2015 Federer playing better than ever -
“I think I'm a better player now than when I was at 24 because I've practised for another 10 years and I've got 10 years more experience,” Federer said. “I might not have the confidence I had at 24 when I was winning 40 matches in a row, but I feel like I hit a bigger serve, my backhand is better, my forehand is still as good as it's ever been, I volley better than I have in the past.”“I think I've had to adapt to a new generation of players again.”

I'd love to see a 2006erer vs 2011ovic match. Of course Fedr would be the favorite, but Djokovic was so insanely good during 2011 Wimbledon that I would still give him a solid chance.

Mentally, Djokovic is stronger now than in 2011. Mental armor is often Djokovic's ace in the hole against Federer.

Their matches are much more than just contests of skills.

Djokovic no doubt has played at a very high level at Wimbledon but even Lew believes Federer's best performance there was a higher level. That tells you all you need to know

Federer’s best level was in 2015 or 2019
What are you basing that off? Even if you want to say that his best level has been the past few years (which is patently ridiculous) why not 2017? He not only got to the final having lost 0 sets (unlike both 2015 and 2019), but he won the final in straights as well.

They'd be more even than some Federer fans like to claim but Federer at his best on grass is also quite a bit better than some Djokovic fans like to claim.

All in all if Fed didn't blow MP it would be 2-2 which I think is a pretty fair record.

They've been pretty even on grass.

He’s basing all of that on a couple of quotes taken out of context. Obviously, Fed can never be wrong so it’s true that he was peak in 2015-2019. However, he also said that in 2013 when he was losing left and right to almost every player in the top 100.

Similar level but didn’t face Djokovic so wasn’t tested.

Yeah it's the classic peak 2015 argument. But even with that ridiculous logic, 2017 Fed was at least as good and probably better than 2015 and certainly 2019. Of course, you and I both know Fed played his best Wimbledon tennis in the 2000s

+1. That was one of the most emotional wins for Novak, especially because Federer was not messing around that day.

For drama and significance 2019 takes the cake, though.

I don't know, TTW seems to like to believe in matches of the past having heavy influence on matches of the future.

If there was any match that Federer lost a lot of belief against Djokovic in, it was 2014 Wimbledon and 2015 Wimbledon.

If 2014 Wimby Fed gets that 5th set BP I don't think he bottles the match serving for it like his 2019 self.

No, no, no. You don't get it. A peak year is when Djokovic is at his peak, when that happens the rest of the players in the world are in their peak as well. In 2017 Djokovic wasn't at his peak so others were also not peak, just got some lucky wins because they didn't have to face him.

Federer looked very tired in the fifth set of Wimbledon 2014 final. I'm not sure he would have won even if he converted that BP.

2014 Wimbledon is one of the most significant matches in both of their careers IMO. Djokovic had lost Wimbledon 13 F, USO F, had been dethroned at the AO and lost yet another match to Nadal in the RG F. He had lost the last 5 slams and 3 finals in a row. If he lost yet again, his confidence would have taken yet another significant blow. As it is, he went on to win 5 of the next 7 slams.

Federer's biggest problem from 2014 onwards has been Djokovic. Mainly in slams. And as much as Djokovic has outplayed him (Wimbledon 2015, AO 2016), there have been matches where Federer's loss was significantly influenced by the mental side (USO 2015, Wimbledon 2019). If he wins in 2014, he has confidence in the slams against Djokovic going forward. As it is, he lost much of it in that match and the rest was beaten out of him at Wimbledon 2015 and beyond.

So yeah, completely agree with your assessment. Wimbledon 2014 was the more significant match, although I guess 2019 may well have been Federer's last legitimate shot at another slam. But time will tell, and I never like to count the old man out.

We'll never know. He had all the momentum and the crowd on his side though. And he wasn't really one to capitulate against Djokovic as much back then.

Federer even played a pretty good, non passive BP, Djokovic just came up with the goods.

Perfectly said. 100 percent my thoughts exactly. On all counts.

All in all it's been a great rivalry to watch, even if Djokovic has gotten the lions share in the tail end. Plenty of times Fed went full on cheat code vs Djokovic as well.

It's a matchup I've always enjoyed. Easier for me than most Fed fans I guess since I like Djokovic a lot too.

The question is why did Fed lose confidence against Djokovic? What made Wimb 2014 so different than all the other previous times he had lost to Novak in slams?

I mean he still had the belief he could beat Djokovic in slams in 2011-2012 even after consecutive slam losses.

Is there anything other than the obvious answer i.e. age?

Federer 2003-2008 was amazing at Wimbledon, granted he didn’t win 2008 but he played amazing. Djokovic has also played great at Wimbledon, but 8 > 4(?)

2003-2008 Fed would beat any Djokovic at Wimb, IMO.

2009 and beyond is when it gets trickier.
Yeah, I think Fed got off the hook in 2009. A weaker opponent than Nadal for a second go for a guy like Fed at Wimbledon is all he needs.

I don't think 2014 was a lack of belief I think Djokovic was just that good. But Fed definitely had chances to beat Djokovic in 2014-2015 and just couldn't find the answers.

That always annoyed me a lot more than the 2019 match, personally.
