Djokovic vs Federer: Repeat of 2005 semi finals?

Provided Federer beats Blake and Djokovic beats Ferrer. Do any of you have the feeling that this is going to be a repeat of 2005 Ao semi finals, where federer loses?

Safin is gone I forgot which round he lost in.

I would prefer Blake to win and he and Djokovic to play (I don't think they've ever have) but if that's not the case and its Djokovic and Fed I hope Djokovic would get his revenge for the USO final.

i dont think it happens...i see a federer-nadal final....unless tsonga is going on a baghdatis-like run and beats nadal...

Djokovic doesn't have the stamina to beat Federer. HAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

Deep down I want Fed to win but Djokovic has been playing some great tennis. Blake won't stand a chance Djoko or Nadal in the final b/c he will definitely choke.... Fed would have a tough time against Djokovic.. Nadal is the only one who has the easiest draw so far.. He's crusing to the semi. If Tsonga can hold his nerve, Nadal will have a tough time.. It's getting interesting now.. GOF FED.. Slam #13 and counting

I'm definitely worried about the fed vs. djokovic match. I know that Fed can't keep walking through opponents like he's been doing the last few years, and djokovic is playing so well this tournament.

Believe in Federer, he's the greatest player that's ever lived, Djokovic is stll young and he'll be around for years after Federer has retired, but right now it's Federer's time. Federer knows he has to raise his game and play like he did in rounds 1 and 2, he'll win, believe in him.

I think it'll be closer than the USO merely because it's not a GS final where nerves played a part in Djokovic's loss.

Perhaps but it's a different day, and if Federer clicks then he'll straight set Novak.

the trend looks good for Federer so far. After the third round he played better and better. i hope he pulls a TMC and destrol Djokovic and Nadal and proving to Djokovic that Federer's dominance has not finished

The ONLY way Djokovic wins against Federer is if he beats him in 3. He has no chance if he's doing great, but Federer pushes it to 4 or 5. Did you see him reeling last night against Ferrer? He can expect more of that against Federer, and I wouldn't be surprised if Federer played windshield-wiper tennis on him like he did to Nadal that year in Miami. I wonder what Djoko's record is in 4 or 5 setters. Given that he gets reeled at the end of a long 3rd set, I'd imagine it must be terrible.

And it's very unlikely that Federer is going to lose 3 straight sets to Djokovic. Much more likely the reverse.

Djokovic doesn't seem like he's improved since the USO Final. And his form at the USO final wasn't even good enough to beat Federer when he's not playing his best tennis. The one thing he has improved on, so far, is mental game, a little. Although he really lost a lot of chances to put away the 3rd set against Ferrer earlier, when he had match-points, and could have put it away. But

Djoko doesn't seem to be in any better fitness than before. That will be a big problem against a guy like Federer, who is arguably even more enduring than Nadal (remember the end of their '06 Rome final, which Nadal won? While Nadal won, he was reeled. Federer looked like he could have just kept on going and going).

PS: The commentators also had a good point about Federer allegedly being "shaky" this AO. He's only lost 2 sets. He has about 2x as many winners as UFE. And he's dropped serve fewer times than anyone else remaining on the tour.

He has a pretty good record in 5 setters but you know , federer in 5 setter is a whole lot of difference to your regular five setter. In my mind it 90/10 for federer and I hope for good tennis and I hope he will at least challange fed and puthis game where his mouth is, at least show that he has a chance of winning in late stages of slams against federer.

I think both have a chance, but I give the edge to Federer. He's mentally better than anyone, and at this point it is a mental game. Physically, they are both well prepared.
If it drags to 5 sets, as some suggested, I give the advantage to Djokovic. But I doubt it will happen...

I say Fed in 3 or 4, but would not be surprised if it's opposite!

You know I predicted that Feds will take all 4 home this year so he has to win this match obviously. I think he has a really good chance, Djokovic is a threat no doubt and has the ability to pull off the upset. But only if Federer is at less than 90%. The way Djoko has been mouthing off about Federer, I expect he'll give Djokovic the old Canas treatment and just try and blister him off the court.

Djokovic is stupid to try and rile Federer, even if he is playing great tennis.

Well knowing a lot about Djoko I can tell you only one thing - he really ment no harm, he is just one of those guys whose confidence is thru the ruff to the point that we all here in serbia think he is sick with overconfidence. Its just who he is and its a part of his character, he is just that kkind of person + being young and obviously immature he allowed himself a few comments which can make his life against federer harder than it could have been.

The other thing is that Djokovic doesn't respect Federer, which really winds Federer up because he feels he's done enough in Tennis to earn the players respect. Federer really doesn't like Djokovic and I expect that will show on court on Friday. I think Djokovic will have to play well to keep it even close because Federer will absoloutely not want to lose to Djokovic.

I can't believe you're saying Djoko has the edge if it goes to 4 or 5 vs. Fed. Djoko will be winded. He is not as mentally strong as Federer. But most important, he'll be winded. He was already winded end of 3rd set against Ferrer. If it goes to 4 or 5, Federer will get progressively better, Djoko worse.

The bad blood began when we were playing davis cup against switzerland, djokovic asked for a medical, he is fragile a bit, especially back then I think it was early 2006, then he heard federer talking to foreign press about disliking weak players and players who call for medical timeouts. He staged a press conference here and spoke about his admiration for federer but that he feels very hard done by his comments because he was in pain and asked for a medical, thats all. Eventually he loss in straights then of course, so I dont know why was federer ticked off at 18year old Djoko asking for medicals.

From then on its history, federer never spoke about Djoko in a nice way, I think Djoko just feels he should start hitting back. Once again, federer who is a classy guy really did not apear like that, he came here to serbia and said - Ill beat them all myself - when asked for a game plan. I mean there are many many statements, on both sides, and this is beggining to shape up. If djoko can live up and be a presence on a tennis court, this is going to be some rivarly.

Federer will just raise the level of his game, above what it was with Blake (for example). Which will force a lot more errors from Djoko.

The longer the match gets, the worse for Djoko who is neither mentally nor physically strong enough to stand it.

Hopefully, Djoko won't be troubled by pain/muscle pulls etc, but it has happened in the last year.

I'd say Fed wins in 3, worst case 4.

We've seen him at the US Open going into the long matches -- that he won!
He can go longer than Fed. We've also seen lost Federer in the 5th againd Tipsy. If Nole was there instead, there would be no Fed in the semis now...

I've heard him say a lot of nice things about the Joker, at least here on Swiss television. But I guess they probably will never become best friends, that's for sure.

Federers credo is: let the racket do the talk. So probably that's why he doesn't yet have the highest respect for Joker. Well at least not that much as he has for Nadal.

OK. Since you want us to know that you're part of the Serb team, why don't you tell us who you are?

R u serious rickson ? I just follow tennis and of course follow my davis cup team, thats about it. If I was someone special in tennis matters, Id surely emphesize that, you better believe I would ..

i have fed through in 4. joker started choking at the end of his match with ferrer, and if he shows any of that against roger he's done.

and i see tsonga in the finals over nadal in 4, if not straights. he's looking a lot like the new bags/gonzo and has the game that can take nadal out.

Exactly. Federer sets such high standard that winning 3 out of 4 slams a year was classified as "decline", "shaky" even with more winners than errors.

Shaky is probably too strong a word. But Fed was a little off his very best before he played Blake last night. After yesterday you have to like his chances a lot. His serve was great and his forehand was looking a lot better, although he did still have a few mishits off it. Perhaps most importantly is that he is starting to move his feet more after being really lax the first couple of rounds.

Still, Djokovic should be fresh and confident coming into this match, so I expect a real battle. I don't think it really matters whether or not Roger likes him, because otherwise Blake would probably have taken a set. This kid has the game, but does he have the (mental and physical) strength?

I think I'd prefer a Fed-Nadal final though. If Tsonga takes the first set, he almost definitely makes the final. Otherwise, gear up for yet another clash of two of top three.

I favor Federer if it goes to five sets, accounting for Federer's mental toughness over Djokovic's in a long match--remembering last year's Wimbledon. Also Djokovic's hasn't been made to push that extra mile in entire tournament, even he admitted that his draw this year was less demanding.

I don't care wether Nadal or Djokovic beat Fed. as long as he loses. I'm done with his time. He is a great player and I don't want to see him gone but I want to see others begin winning slams and him stop winning most of them. I'd like to see him beat Sampras' record for slams and that's about it.

Gotta love those who want Fed's reign of dominance to be over because -- are you ready -- they're sick of it. Come on. Obviously, if you like a player, you want him to win. That's no reason for wanting some other player to lose just because he's been winning a lot lately.

Federer has won so many slams because he deserves to win them; or rather, he won, therefore, he deserved to win. Everyone who hasn't won a slam over the last 4 years, just hasn't deserved to win a slam over the last for years. Winning a slam isn't about being good or great. It's about being the best. Only the best deserve to win slams. Clearly, over the last 4 years, there have only been two players who have been able to be the best at any of the 4 slams: Federer and Nadal. And the rest just aren't worthy (that is, aren't worthy of winning the slam, not aren't worthy in general).

You forgot Safin. In last 4 years. In last 5 Roddick also.

dh003i

Good point, Safin is in there in the last 4 years as well.

But the overall thrust of my point is the same. Federer, Nadal, Safin...other than those guys, no-one else in the last 4 years deserved to win a slam at all, because no-one actually won it. Deserving to win a slam = beating everyone you face at a slam. Last 4 years, only those 3 have done that.

Wasn't it just a year ago when in the run-up to Federer's semi-final against Roddick, all the hype was that Roddick had 'closed the gap' and Federer was prime for an upset by Roddick. Even Roddick couldnt help himself and actually got a bit carried away with some of his remarks.

I doubt Federer was impervious to all that talk and hype going on and came out and gave Roddick the lesson of his life.

History has a habit of repeating itself.

if Federer was to beat Djokovic 4, 0, and 2, I'd be extremely surprised. We should have 4 sets, a tiebreaker or two and no bagels.
