Djokovic vs Nadal - Miami 2011 FULL MATCH

The interesting pattern that I was waiting for someone to bring up here...

Nadal lost a Miami every three years since his first

2005 - first final lost
2008 - three years later second final lost
2011 - three years later third final lost
2014 - three years later fourth final lost
2017 - three years later fifth final lost
2020 - pandemic stopped the pattern

I remember watching the entirety of this match whilst devouring popcorn early on a Monday morning in April 2011 and loving every second of it.

2 gladiators going toe-to-toe in brutal humid conditions, Djokovic out-Nadaled Nadal. Nadal threw the kitchen sink at Djokovic in this match, Nadal really wanted to win a Miami title but Djokovic just would not be denied even when he was 2 points away from losing the match in the 3rd set at 5-6 15-30.

2011 Indian Wells final really set the tone for the Miami final as well. Nadal played well in the 1st set but unfortunately his serve just went AWOL in the 2nd set and Djokovic is too good a returner and punished Nadal for hitting such a low percentage of 1st serves. Before this match, Djokovic had never beaten Nadal in any final that they had played, it was 5-0 for Nadal, Djokovic finally winning a final against Nadal (2011 IW) freed him up mentally and he just kept riding that confidence wave whenever he faced Nadal for the rest of 2011

It’s disappointing that Nadal allowed a masters final to create a mental block
The problem was technical more than mental.

Look at Novak's game. It was, generally and in most days, more aggressive than Nadal's one. Observe his deep returns, his magnificent serves to Nadal's backhand side, his powerful backhand and electric forehands nearly painting the lines...

Novak's game on hard courts seemed especifically designed to counter Nadal's one (and everyone else, including our Roger, but Roger could make their games on hard far closer and matched up generally better on that surface against Novak than Rafa). Nadal's game could only compete with the Djokovic on hard when he himself played very aggressively like in the summer of 2011.

With Roger you can argue there was a mental block, if you consider the 40-15 saga. But Nadal didn't have such close loses where he missed match points, whenever he lost the Novak played better. Even at the AO 2012. Yes, he missed a crucial backhand, but Novak was overall playing better and Nadal was mentally strong enough to win a TB and push it to the 5th.

There's a few contenders. Another is 2008 Hamburg, with Nadal's number 2 ranking on the line (which he had held since 25 July 2005). Nadal won 7-5, 2-6, 6-2, and 3 months later was world number 1.

Their 2008 Queen's Club final on grass was excellent too. A very close match, with just a few points enabling Nadal to win 7-6, 7-5.

Both pretty good matches, but not quite up to the Madrid 09 sf imo.

If I was to rank them:

#1 - Madrid09
#2 - Miami11
#3 - Canada13
#4 - Olympics08
#5 - Indian Wells11
#6 - Queens08
#7 - Hamburg08
#8 - Rome14

I haven't seen the IW 11 match in a while was it that good?

Their greatest best of three match on HC, this was the match that truly changed their dynamic and showed the world that Djokovic was here to stay. Enjoy.
Watching some since I have free time. Great stuff.

Nadal is clearly better in the longer points but Djokovic groundstrokes of both wings have more MPH on it. Into the 2nd set now.

Didn’t he say in a runners up speech once “I’ll see you in 3 years” or something like that? Might have been in 2017

Well , didn’t you see the data of increase in ground stroke’s speed??
Yes zombie cult nothing

The member asked for it.

Sinner groundstrokes are much bigger than Djokovic. These guys can definitely contest vs 2011 versions of rafole. These meaning sinner and alcaraz.

ABSOLUTELY! Love their 2011 Miami match for just those reasons. Man I miss Miami when it was in Key Biscane...some truly fantastic finals on that court

I also definitely agree about them going into 2013 Canada SFs. Just on the court, they had the 2012 AO Finals, Nadal then beating Novak in Rome, MC, and Roland Garros (with Djoko double faulting on match point in both Rome and RG); Djoko beating Rafa in MC in 2013 (ending Nadal 8-year STRANGLEHOLD on that tournament), the 2013 French Open SFs, etc...and that was just on the court. Great match and a big moment in Rafa's run through the North American Hardcourts that summer
Crandon Park i loved so much, i even loved the iconing flood lights that extended out over the court. The Nadal-Djokovic rivalry was at its peak 2009(starting at Madrid)-2014 (ending at FO).
After that it was never really the same quality wise.

Federer was also very close in Monte Carlo, most of all in 2014 against Wawrinka, and failed to win it.

Yes, crazy to think Federer is 0-4 at both Monte Carlo AND Rome, and you can't just say he had Nadal stopping him each time.

I guess it was just not meant to be. That loss to Wawrinka was a strange one, Federer was looking good that MC.
