Rafael Nadal (#2) and Novak Djokovic (#3) fight for a spot in the finals of the 2009 Paris Masters.

  • Nadal's route to the final: R32 Almagro, R16 Robredo (14th seed), QF Tsonga (8th seed)
  • Djokovic's route to the final: R32 Monaco, R16 Clement (Qualifier), QF Soderling (9th seed)

Nadal leads the H2H 14-5, Djokovic leads the H2H on hardcourts 5-3 (their only meeting indoors was in 2007 at the Master's Cup, Nadal winning in straight sets)

Nadal, on his victory over defending Paris champion Tsonga, and his semifinal with Djokovic:
"I played at about my highest level since returning from the injury. I played a very complete match, I was really in great form, not at all like the other days. I played a lot better today, I was really focused all the time and played well at important moments. This is positive and gives me a lot of confidence." "This is my first big victory since the injury, so I'm very happy for that"

"Probably (Djokovic) is the player who's playing better in this part of the season, he's doing really good end of the season. It's going to be a challenge for me and a good test. I know he's the favourite on this kind of surface, but I'm here to keep improving and we will see what happens tomorrow." "It's the fifth straight semi-final for me so I am there all the time and when you are there all the time one day you will win."

Djokovic, on his match with Soderling and upcoming semifinal:
“It was a real struggle, in the second set I wasn’t moving very well; I was fighting myself, letting him play and control the match. I managed to focus when I needed to and hold the nerves and I’m happy to be in the semi-finals.”

"It looked tense (against Soderling) because physically I didn’t really feel 100 percent. Look, I've been playing more than 90 matches this year and now two weeks in a row. Suddenly my metabolism is getting a little bit tired. It's all normal. It's all natural. I just hope I can recover for the upcoming challenge." "(Nadal) is a big champion and plays really well on all surfaces. He is a big fighter" "The game that I would like to improve is my serve, which I didn't think was working well today"

Nadal is attempting to reach his second final at the ATP Paris Masters, Djokovic is competing in his first semifinal at the ATP Paris Masters.

The match is the first one of the day and begins 2PM, local time, on center court.

Djokovic overall is a better hard court player than Nadal even at peak form -- Novak should be able to see this one through.

Personally, I think Nadal's going to win it.

Probably in 3 sets.

He looked much better against Tsonga than he has all season since Rome, really.

Here's the highlights from the Nadal-Tsonga match on Friday:

Djokovic has had a good run of form recently, but his level dropped against Soderling and his interviews after that match seem to indicate some underlying fatigue.

More Info

At stake for Nadal is a chance to record his 400th tour victory in the final, win a record 4 Masters in a season (again) and tie Federer for most Master's finals in a season, and, crucially, close the gap enough between him and Federer in the rankings so that he could take back the #1 spot at the World Tour Finals in London.

At stake for Djokovic is a chance to redeem himself this season and finally win a Master's title this season (his first on indoor hardcourts) as well as a chance to distance himself from world #4 Murray in the rankings and set himself up as a favorite for the World Tour Finals in London.

With Nadal the more he has a chance to play (and win) the better he gets. He is also better when he has to face a 5 setter. Up until now during this tournament it has been his mental strength over the others that has driven him to win. Djoko is playing really well. Nadal will have to be prepared for an early take off and his opponent won't be flagging like the others did. Really hope he gets this

nadal will overcome a great player djokovic because he know that world number one position is for grabs and he will not give it up

I like both players so I will be happy with either result. I just hope for a good match, and the winner to win the final. Rafa is my favorite and I would sort of like to see him win, but on the other hand I really want Djokovic to win a Masters title this year and this is his last chance at it.

I think on form today Rafa was clearly the better of the two though. Djokovic seems fatigued from last week today, playing a poor match for his standards to just scrape past the enormously overrated Soderling, and I am not sure if he will be able to stem that tide.

Nadal must have persuaded Tsonga and Nole to tank their matches, so that he can battle it out with Roger for the No.1 spot in London final. Tsonga was pretending he got injured last week, and Djokovic feigned exhaustion against Soderling yesterday. It will all become clear in a few hours.

T-minus 2 hours

I really should be sleeping, yearly tests coming up and it's late here.

Damn it, i really wanted to watch this but i'm going to be a good boy and get some shut eye for my tests.

Good night lucky fellas :)

Is this the first match-up on the schedule today?

Just like the French to put Monfils last (headliner so to speak).

That's unfortunate I'll miss the match... :( I'll have the blackberry on me and look forward to the updates in this thread.

Djokovic in 3... if he can stay mentally in the match and control the point... I doubt Nadal can play 'lights-out' two matches in a row.. and seeing as how Novak didn't play his best yesterday, looking for him to step-up today.

I just ticked noon =p

glad there's a countdown going on, still haven't got a pdf reader on my new comp so can't view the OoP ><

I'm going for Djokovic in 3; people are putting a lot of weight on yesterdays matches, but an off day for Nole and one good day from Rafa doesn't convince me that Rafa is going to come out on top today.

exactly. One really good day off the ground and 2 good days in a row serving doesn't mean much. But I hope he wins! :)

Athens,Greece... but raised in the suburbs of Washington,D.C.

Donde esta tu familia su?

mi famila estas de AZ and NJ. I might go to AZ for thanksgiving, will be nice to get away from WA a bit. Gets a bit dreary here during the winter.

Never been to athens, but did go to some island in greece. Can't remember which anymore, was very touristy though. :)

lol, I took some spanish 10 years ago, but I am not spanish. I am down to words like asi asi at this point. :)

Should be an interesting match! Quite excited if I may say so :)

Not sure who I'm going for... I like both players.. and I'm glad to see Nadal back in strong form.

Novak in 3 is not very likely given that he never beat Nadal in 3 sets, all his wins against him were straight sets affairs so I'll go with Novak in 2,if it goes to 3 Nadal wins IMO.

I thought you were spanish .. Bolo in Spanish means 'skittle' as in the skittles that they fry tortillas.

Anyway... 15min. until the match and I leave in 10min. :(
