Yes, save the top 8 comment, can't speak to that.
Novak has lost something, and it's much more than his last match.
I don't think anyone's disputing that? My comment and the thread were about finishing top 8. He probably will.

!RemindMe(Djokovic v Thiem 2017)

:p ;)

(Solid point about that Almag match tho)
I'd dearly love for Thiem to be in Djoko's quarter at RG.:p

The tally so far is 24% voting for 9 or worse. The most votes by a landslide are 2-4. Nole may be 5 after RG.

@Meles:

Djokovic would go to #9 in the race if he beat Del Potro. He's currently up a break in the first set. Still think he won't make the Tour Finals?
Raonic and Nishikori seemed determined for Nole to have a spot. We'll see how his draws pan out if his ranking drops out of the top. Right now his play is promising, but a lot of paper tigers in his section with Nishikori and Delpo.

Djokovic now up to #7 in the race. And if he wins tomorrow, he will be #4. Also, if he wins tomorrow, he will put himself in with a good chance of holding on to a top 4 ranking spot after RG.

As a Novak fan I surely hope so. The matchup problem for Thiem is huge. To understand this you need to understand tennis a bit better. Thiem cant be rushed and cant play someone who plays flat and deep with a lot of angles. That is why he has problems playing Goffin for example.
Nooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo. Novak in the other half with Nadal please.:D

 Thiem was a tad flat and Novak was completely the opposite (amazingly:eek:). I'd say the slow evening conditions helped tipped the scale and clay matches can be very lopsided at times. Thiem played Novak close in Miami last year, but perhaps you did not see that?

Perhaps you didn't see that the h2h between Djokovic and Thiem was 5-0 for Djokovic? Forget it. Thiem had his day in the sun beating Nadal but he wasn't good enough to take it further and win the title and he won't win the FO unless Nadal, Djokovic and others get knocked out. Your time as a prognosticator is up!

I really didn't make a forecast for this match given the time between his QF finish with Delpo and this match. I've been remarking on the quality of Djokovic's play all this week and thought 2012-2014 Djokovic was about to show up. Today's performance was stunning. I believe this is the best I've seen him on clay and an amazing turn around from getting mauled by Nadal less than one week ago. I've said in this thread that I though Rome/Madrid back to back and the packed Masters 1000 schedule this Spring might allow Djokovic to play into this form. A seemingly amazing transformation today.:p

Last four sets for Thiem vs Djokovic are 2, 0, 1, 0. In fact, last year and this year Novak only bagelled Thiem since the start of clay season I think. He is a godsend and I would love him to be in Novak's draw in RG like last year. Easy work.

Correct, just a tad flat which meant bagel and breadstick.

Imagine if Thiem was fully flat - 2 golden sets ?

It's good for the tournament if Novak is back on form. He can at least give Nadal a competitive match in a best of five on clay, which nobody else can do.

But you had most posters on this forum moaning about Djokovic having to play two matches today and what an advantage that would give Thiem! They got that wrong along with the Djokovic is finished and a walking zombie due to Pepe BS! Weren't you saying that the Rome conditions favored Thiem?

What does a packed Masters 1000 schedule this Spring have to do with Djokovic getting back into form? It was only a matter of time for him to find some form. You could see in the past month or so that he was more motivated than in the prior 8 months. The fact that he fired his entire team only showed how motivated and serious he was, not the opposite as many said.

Funny that djokovic struggles against thiem on hc but not on clay but how ?

I hope you are reminded how easy it is for the Big 4 to make top 8 by the end of the year. Even Murray will probably get there comfortably. 3.5k or whatever that top 8 cutoff is is nothing for them.

7th in the points race, 4th if he wins tomorrow. And this is his worst start to a season in 11 years.

Barring injury, he will qualify easily.

Thiemy tired both times:
"1/6 0/6 versus Novak Djokovic. It’s crazy how thin the line between success and failure is, today Novak showed me that once more. Yesterday I was celebrating and today it came to a bitter end. I am not yet used to play so many matches against so many great player, I was tiered and used up all my energy yesterday. Nevertheless, it has been some incredible good weeks for me and some awesome wins, I am really looking forward to the upcoming challenges, ROLAND GARROS here I come! But first I am heading home charging up my batteries and getting the final finish. Ciao Roma!

A tired player can still win more than a single game.

Credit to Thiem on an awesome last few weeks, though. Third best player on clay atm.

@Meles:

Djokovic didn't win Rome, and so is still #7 in the race.

But he will leave RG ranked no lower than #5, and probably #3 or #4. (Nadal likely overtakes him. Wawrinka may overtake him but it's not that likely. Either Raonic or Cilic could overtake him, but both have to win the title to do so, and so it's impossible for both to do so. Hence he can slip no lower than #5 the day after RG).

7 in the race is good, but maybe not good enough after RG; Nole will lose ground on grass. Granollers match yesterday.

Why? Of the people beneath him, Kyrgios, Cilic, Milos, Andy, Tsonga and Dimitrov can be expected to do reasonably well on grass. Of the people above him, only Fed s a safe bet, but your new boy Zverev should do well as well. And Rafa, given his confidence and better serve, might do something too. http://live-tennis.eu/en/atp-race

Do you still stand by your claim that he won't make the WTF cut? It was ludicrous to begin with and it seems ludicrous now.
If he wins tomorrow he'll be 4th in the race despite playing well in 2 tournaments (Doha/Rome).
sign of the strong era, no?

He lost in round 3 of Wimbledon last year. It's almost impossible for him to do worse than tread water, although he could fall behind Federer. At any rate, he's got a good chance now of retaining a top 4 spot until Canada. By then, he might well have recovered form.

7 in the race and not playing Queens/Halle;)

Which means he'll surpass Federer in terms of consecutive weeks spent inside the top 4. No doubt something else for certain members of the RF fanbase to get their knickers in a twist over. :D
 seriously doubt it. I honestly think you're one of the few people on the planet to know this fact and care for it. Consider me impressed :D

So this makes Djokovic the leading member of the Big 4.

Well Nole's days in the top 4 are numbered. We have just left traditionally the strongest part of Djokovic's season (save the two Masters 1000s in the Fall.) He's only sixth in the race with Zverev ahead of him.
giphy.gif

Zverev will likely expand that lead on grass. After some resurgence at RG Murray close behind at 7 seems poised to pass Nole too for good. Dimitrov is 400 points behind, but may close that gap by the end of Wimbledon. Djokovic is lucky Goffin is out for a while on grass (returns Wimbledon.) Also lurking our Raonic, Kyrgios, and Tsonga (3 titles already this year). Djokovic still may not qualify for WTF.

Before WTF failure happens Djokovic must drop out of the top 4 in the rankings at some point. If Federer runs the tables on grass it could happen with his Wimbledon triumph. Otherwise, it's likely to be a nice early 36th birthday present for Roger after Nole's Rogers Cup victory drops.

Djokovic has played poorly so far and he's still 6th in the race. He's only going to better I think and there is no way he's missing out on WTF. He doesn't even have to play that well and he'll still be there.
