Djokovic - your thoughts as he heads into RG 2024

How far will Djokovic go at the FO?

I think EVERYONE knows Djokovic is playing less to conserve for grand slams and Olympics. When he makes a big breakthrough.

ALL of you are going to behave like, yup it was expected. Nothing special or extraordinary.

I agree it's not extra ordinary because he doesn't suck even today. It's just the habit of ttw to burry a player when some results don't go well.

Coincidentally, Djokovic won the Australian Open, the French Open, and the US Open last year. Which happened to be the three slams that Mats Wilander won in 1988.

Djokovic and Wilander are the only players, besides Rod Laver, to have won these three events in the same year, since the start of the open era.

Good point. I do still expect that Djokovic will finish higher than #12 in 2024, though. Wilander finished #12 in 1989 - also from the start of 1989 on, he only made one GS SF, at the 1990 AO. Djokovic already has one GS SF since the end of 2023. So, despite being 36.5/36.67 compared to Wilander's 24.33 at the end of their three-slam years, it still seems that Djokovic's falloff won't be as great as Wilander's was.

This is probably the closest top 50 or whatever had ever been to the top players. Due to young guys injury issues Djokovic's declined form this year and earlier it was Nadal's issues for 2 years it looks like by level top 50 is very close to top guys. Most of us don't know the players but they are upsetting top.

Outside of Sinner on HC looks like nobody can dominate anywhere this year. (so far)

Never thought I’d see the day Djoko gets blown off the court by Tabillo and Rafito by Hurk and Lehecka. Djoko has been clowning around all year, but was still stunned to see Tabillo blasting winners by him lol

True.

Nole has no injury or fitness issues so I can only guess that he's bored of the new gen not challenging him and letting him win tournaments easily.

It all depends on noles interest in the tournament. He can find his form through the easy early rounds if he wants and really applies himself. Didn't he lose to fokina last year in monte carlo before beating him along the way to winning rg? He was also winning ao 24 if not for sinner. It's very possible we see an entirely different djoko at the slams.

As for someone saying Alcaraz is the favorite if fit - recall he's been overpowered out of a couple of slams by zverev and one by medvedev.

so hard to say. not playing well, but has he really been going 100%? if he's not injured, we could see a different novak in a tournament we know is a real priority.

I think he lacks motivation for Masters1000 today. He has the record with 40 so why bother. He is 37, his goal is to be fully rested and fit for Grand Slams. AO wasn't a disaster at all, he simply lost against the best player of the year (who may not even participate in Paris). Last year his clay season was just as mediocre if not worse (at least he made a semi in Monte-Carlo this year) and then we saw what happened. If he is motivated and healthy in Paris, he is still a top favorite as far as I'm concerned. He is a different player in BO5.

That he doesn't want to push 100% for masters is different than a blowout 2 and 3 loss.

Last year he smirked after reporter asking him about French open. He lost in third set vs rune. In qf.

So yeah this year he is underprepared. I think his Rome exit is very bad.

Just got breadsticked by Machac in a deciding set today. What is going on with him this year as he is getting soundly beaten by players who are not top ranked? Nardi, Tabilo, Machac - who are these guys? At a time when people are complaining about the depth of the tour, these guys are good enough to beat the #1 player in the world who won three Slams and multiple Masters last year? Quite a puzzle.

He should have skipped clay and gone all in for Wimbledon, he has a small chance there - but zero chance on clay.

at this stage of his career he needs to be smarter...

They don't suck equally. Djokovic barely lost in mc semis. And in Rome it's a freak nature of what happened post match that affected him.

Don't put them in same boat. Nadal is almost at the finished line.
Not so sure about Novak, as he seemed to have obvious physical problems today. He just can't seem to play well consistently now. I don't think he will last beyond the quarters this FO, at best. I wouldn't be surprised if Novak, Rafa, Stan and Murray all retired by the end of this year.

I don't see him winning RG. But I feel he can have a decent showing.
I am so desperate now for Rafa and Novak to make the semis and have a belter of a match where they rewind the clock because i am sick of the disrespect both these legends get after every loss. F@ck the rivalry now, for me it is 20th Century born generation vs 21st Century Gen Zers.
Both legends have a section of their own fans who overreact like mad to a loss at minor events.
Novak looked good at times today, just lacked a bit of consistency. Absolutely no big eal losing today. He also tried and gave the fans their moneys worth, he could easil have decided to screw it after 1st set and head to paris, so kudos to him for being professional.

Practice event so all about getting some feeling in stroke production. Do not read anything into it.
Judge him after 3 rounds in paris. Same as with all the contenders.

Fed was bageled by Hubi in his last Wimbledon match, the same thing would happen to Rafa and Novak if they play until 40 (and they won't). The chances of Rafa making the semis is literally nil. Djokovic would also need luck and a decimated draw to make it that far. It's not disrespectful to point out both players are ancient, it just a fact.

He is not an idiot to do that.

He wants Olympics gold and he will get it. But that's on clay if you didn't know.n

Dude is cooked, done winning slams.

He's legs and lungs are gone, stamina has been a glaring issue in the last few months. He has tried to hide it by playing less and less tournaments to peak for GS, but when he goes the distance in a match it's the elephant in the room.

I haven’t watched his recent matches including his losses on clay. Why is he losing?

Is he more passive? Is he serving worse? He seems to be getting broken a lot and losing many double-break sets.

Djokovic has never had a true weapon like Fedal, his backhand has been MIA for several years now, he's been able to get away with winning due to several factors aligning to get him through (non his fault), lack of young talent and hiding his lack of weapons with a much improved serve are two of the main factors that come to mind.

BUT, it has been pretty obvious to me he has been gassing in matches for quite some time now, he lost a lot of stamina, and it shows.

Hmmm…looking forward to seeing Novak in ffp section very soon. It’s been a good run for the man, but he’s looking a wee bit tired.

Still it will be nice to see him crush a few more souls before it all turns to dust!

Even though he doesn't appear in top form going in, it's still hard to imagine someone outside the top 10 taking 3 sets off him. It's just a different challenge than beating him in b03 outside the slams
