Djokovic's injury

This was heartbreaking. You watch hoping that Djokovic will lose. He wins first 2 sets and it is bad. Then, he looks injured; he can't move, can't hit, he can serve, but that's it. He loses a set, than the other one. He is done and dusted. In your mind you celebrate; loss is inevitable. Suddanly he starts moving better, hitting better. He is still hampered, it is not 100% Djokovic, but he can put some resistance. And he wins. Heartbreaking. There is no justice in the world.
How sad is the situation, when you can't be sad for your "favourite", but instead troll the boards with his injury?

I hope he's ok, any injury be it a strain or a tear of the abdominal area is a cause for concern.

I don't know the protocol for tending to an injury in that area, maybe a massage? painkillers? Heat pad?

Let's assume he does withdraw from the Raonic match. How do people feel about Djokovic's decision to play on and win the match if he's fairly certain he won't be able to play the next match?

Strictly from a viewer stand point. Is it bad form to deny Fritz the chance to go further knowing you can't and deny the next match or is it right to get as many points from your slam run before withdrawing?
Haven't all of them done it?

I think he did something relatively minor. He could still play fine if he wanted. He was exaggerating his distress.

He could play the next match if he wanted. He will only withdraw because he knows he could make it worse and his chances of winning the AO now are not good. That's it.

I wouldn't be surprised one bit if he plays on and wins the damn thing. There's a lot of overreacting going on. Someone hurt real bad doesn't act like that after winning imo. Very odd to celebrate that intensely if he believes he has a tear.

Ouch. I'm certain he'll withdraw because it's not good for him to risk further injury and Novak keeps his points from last year anyway.
So i guess it's a Thiem-Medvedev final?

No injury. Just outplayed in the third and fourth set. Watch his "injury" flare up again next time somebody starts outplaying him.

on his abdominal injury: "The way it felt at the beginning of the third set...I was debating really strongly in my head to retire after two games because I couldn't move 1/4

2/4 Djokovic continued: "I couldn't rotate, I couldn't return. The only thing I could do is serve and that is what got me out of trouble. It got better in the fifth and I could start to play"

3/4 Djokovic continued: "I am very, very proud (he could win) but at the same time I am a little worried because I don't know what's going on. I think it's a tear.

4/4 Djokovic continued: "I don't have great experience in terms of continuing in the tournament, so that's something that's in the clouds for me at the moment whether I am going to step on court in two days. Hopefully, God willing, I will be able to play"

He was in control of that match. He fell at 3-3 in the third, two sets up and then took the MTO right after (his turn to serve). He then dropped serve immediately after. No conspiracy theories.
Unfortunately he's suffering from (in my opinion), 'boy who cried wolf'. If he really is injured, a lot of people are just automatically going to assume the worst from him. He's done it too many times for them and me to be anything other than sceptical. Sorry!
I agree, it does seem an odd time for him to start his antics, leading in sets and going with serve in the 3rd, so perhaps he was telling the truth, but . . . . it's Novak. This is the way.

He clearly fell and hurt himself. Whether he was as bad as he made it out to be I don't know, but no reason to almost throw a match you are clearly in control of.

I didn't see that he'd fallen, so my bad, I'll accept that. We'll see how he goes next round.

Heartbreaking that your favorite can't beat the guy with a torn muscle? So your guy is the pathetic loser than can't beat a broken guy? What does that make you? What level of pathetic do you hold?

Djokovic lexicon :

English: strain
Djokovic: tear

English: discomfort
Djokovic: agony
As a Novak fan, I can definitely agree that he’s prone to hyperbole.

He’s injured. Whether it’s a strain or tear is what we don’t know yet.

Lol it is not a tear. He is being a drama queen. A tear would have stopped him playing the match. He has a strain. Will be fine taped up and with painkillers.
He just needs to toughen up a bit. It seems he is a bit soft when it comes to pain.
I agree with you. He got the 20 minute break for treatment while stadium was getting emptied.
And after that in 5th set he was much better. Able to hit forehands.
With 2 days break, he will be good enough.Beat Raonic easily and be prepared for zverev and thiem when they come

If Fritz can't beat an injured player he doesn't deserve that chance

I personally believe right now anyway he wants to avoid a potential reverse repeat of AO 2019.

His focus may be on FO in a few months. Not wanting to miss that. Imagine taking out and embarrassing Nadal there. Possibly first of the Big Three to win all four at least twice... Nice little badge in your record no?

The only guy who can beat Novak is Medvedev. I think even a sub-par Novak beats Raonic/Zverev and Thiem comfortably.
I've been MOST disappointed by Thiem in this tournament. Way lower than expectations.
Medvedev is by far the best so far.

I watch this match after the Thiem, Kyrgios match was over so I caught it in the early 4th set. I knew the result of this match after I found out that Djokovic was injury from a stretch slip that he had in separating him legs wide open. I seem Djokovic do these fake injury routines before and he alway won the match at the end. This time he put more drama and suspense into it. I love this match ending new primitive caveman, male gorilla in heat antics! I was giggling like a child after that! Brilliantly acted out too. Djokovic has now create a new extended version of his fake injury script and it was a very good acting performance too. I now look forward to watching him play because of his desire for creating new suspense, drama theater in and during his tennis matches. His opponent play decrease in quality to compensate for Djokovic limited mobility and shot making while he had his fake injury. The 5th set, Djokovic got back to being 100% while Fritz was still playing at his poor quality tennis. It was so easy for Djokovic to break Fritz and take the 5th set in record time.

He would have retired today in most tournaments around the world except Wimbledon and AO.

AO he has such a special relationship, he wins here most of the time. Taylor fritz was the guy who couldn't take any advantage today. And he knew somewhere he will give the opening . And he did.

Two years back against Stan he retired in USO. Because he knows no fanky business with Stan.

My guess is that he will see how he feels aginst Raonic. If he feels bad, he would withdraw. Else he will chance for the next matches

I originally thought he was only milking it and he would be fine for the rest of the tournament. But his reaction to winning, something about his face and his answers to interviews after, makes me think this is possibly different.

Oh I think he knew he was always going to win the match. Maybe not in 3 sets. His roar was just too loud for an empty arena. I know he knows there are cameras but really, something about the look on his face and his walk as he was walking back onto court after the mto.

We'll see anyway. I don't think he was really injured against Stan at the USO in 2019. Not enough to retire. But I think he knew he was going to lose. (Like I think with last year's FO after the final started.) He just didn't want to finish and give Stan a proper victory. Also bad memories from 2016.

Slight misquote corrected. Seems like he really doesn't know for sure but it could be something that could be serious.

Djokovic is a drama queen lets be honest. He has a very low pain threshold and he was overexaggerrating. @BeatlesFan called it at the time saying Djokovic woukd roar back after the break and look fresh and he did. If he had a tear in the abdomen he would not have been able to roar like he did at the end lol.
I have no.idea what is going on in his head but he looks like he is preparing excuses should he get beat. He has a tough draw now. And the weather forecast is hot.

Novak Djokovic reveals how close he was to retiring as Taylor Fritz questions severity of injury
George Bellshaw

‘Let’s see, I don’t know – I don’t have a great experience with tears in terms of continuing in the tournament so that’s something that is in the clouds for me at the moment whether I am going to step out in the court in two days. Hopefully, god willing, I will be able to play.’

Fritz, the 27th seed from the USA, cut a hugely frustrated figure after his defeat and said he felt Djokovic would have retired if his injury was ‘really, really bad’. ‘He was serving unbelievable in the fifth set,’ said Fritz. ‘He was serving two first serves and barely really missing any, hitting the spots, serving faster, harder than he was before in the previous sets. I found it even tougher to return his serve.

‘Then much more pressured, as well, to hit a better return because he was stepping in and just cracking it so well and not missing. You know, he was making some mistakes, some errors in the third and fourth, and just cracking the ball and not really missing in the fifth. I didn’t feel like I really had a good chance. ‘And then also just putting a lot of pressure on my serve with how he was attacking it. He was picking a side, and if he guessed the right side he just, like, just crushed the return. ‘It was, you know, that was tough to deal with and it was also obviously tough to deal with him all of a sudden moving fast and just like playing so much better from the third and the fourth. ‘I mean, I should have – I expected that. But I expected that if he was really, really injured he wouldn’t have kept playing. I knew that he would come back strong in the fifth.

Agree and I called it too! Page 68 of the Men's singles thread. Have no idea anymore when in the match that was. Timestamp says 4:27AM
Guys. Stop worrying. It's all good. Novak is just conserving energy and waiting to break out of oppossum mode. In the 5th set I mean.

(Sorry I don't have a Gif :/)
Yeah, I think it's strain like others have suggested but could get worse. Weather is a good point too, I don't think Novak likes the speed of the courts this year either. I don't think he was worried about anyone except potentially getting to Nadal or Thiem and hampered by something.

It achieves two things: it messes with the head of all his future opponents and also gives him a ready built excuse if he loses. Consider Raonic... now the robot will be thrown off in his mental prep: "Is Nole really injured? Can I actually finally beat him? What should my strategy be to pull him wide?" When the match begins and Novak is stretching like Gumby and laying down serves at 125 MPH, the giraffe will realize he was fooled by all these histrionics.

When a person has a legitimate muscle strain they don't win fifth sets or are even able to continue play. When Novak had a real muscle tear in 2011, he was out for a month:
