I was just looking at Djokovic's "rankings breakdown" on his ATP profile. Ranking is calculated by the best 18 tournaments a player has played in the past year, and if you're in the top 30, 4 of these have to be ATP 500's. I noticed that right now only 3 500's are being counted towards Djokovic's ranking, even though he played 5 last year. These are Davis Cup (505pts), Dubai (500pts), and Beijing (500pts). Basel (300pts), and Rotterdam (180pts) are deemed "non-countable" right now, even though he should be able to get one of them towards his ranking.
Does anyone know why this is? My guess is that since Davis Cup went over 500pts (its 505) it counts as 2 events. But unfortunately he only gets 5 extra points for it (which is nothing) instead of being able to count a whole other tournament.
The interesting part is, if Djokovic had, say, Basel as part of his ranking right now he would be #2.
