Do poly crosses cut into mains?

If I use Wilson Reaction 16/17g in the mains and Luxilon Ace 18g in a hybrid on a 18/20 pattern (NXG midsize), would the poly cut into the mains and reduce durability?
Full luxilon goes completely dead in 2 weeks for me, do you think it will play longer if I hybrid it?

All crosses cut into mains if you have a spin oriented game. Regardless of the mains. Regardless of the crosses.

Since a thinner guage increases the sawing effect, is their any other way to reduce it besides lowering the guage of my string?

It is true that all crosses saw into the main, but some crosses saw into the main quicker that others. Its simple science, the harder the cross is compared to the main, the higher the sawing effect. For example a poly will saw in to a multi quicker than a multi will into a poly. I really never understood how people use poly on the cross and gut on the main. Poly would saw through gut really quickly.

So if I switched the strings around making the mains poly and the crosses synth gut, would the mains saw into the crosses or is it only the crosses that saw into mains?

by nature of the motion of the strings (NOT the type of string) the crosses saw into the mains.

WRONG! try again!

Just for background info, I was never a poly fan, but thought I'd try to put Poly in the cross for the fun of it. I play with gut in the main. Here's a couple of my setup on the PT630 / PT280.

1)Pacific ToughGut 17g main (50lb) / Weisscannon Scorpion 17Lg cross (50lb)

2)VS 16g main (50lb) / Pro Supex Bid Ace 17g cross (50lb)

I hit with load of spin and swing all out. Guess what? My natty gut main has been holding just fine...almost like new condition; and it's gotten at least 10 hrs of hitting so far! At this rate, I probably got at least another 10 hrs and maybe more.

So, about 20 hrs is NOT "really quickly"! Another misconception about gut. People, read the posts on TW Forum with a salt of grain and do your own testing. Don't follow like a sheep. :)

BTW. If your racquet is open pattern, then of course, your main will not last as long as the PT630/280 with its 18x20. It all depends...duh

When I had gut mains with poly crosses it lasted about 3 days.

When I had Poly mains and gut crosses, it lasted about 3 months, and it was actually my gut crosses that broke before the mains which is very odd for me.

Straight gut last me about 1 month

yes there is, you dont have to change string, get string savers, they are dirt cheap and available at TW, Babolat elasto crosses are mine of choice, they provide a buffer at the joints and make you strings last suprisingly longer especially with your problem it would help

Just keep in mind that it does change the feel a little bit. Some people think its feels better some think it feels worse. Its more of a dampened feel. Personally I like the feel but I don't use those things because I don't want to go through the hassle of putting them on.

puting them on takes about 1 minute total, seriously 1 minute, it slightly alters the feel but its worth a try because it would change the feel as much as changing strings

Well, poly/gut hybrid would definitely last longer than gut/poly. but not like 3 days vs 3 months.

it also depends on the string pattern of your racquet. i have dense 18x20 pattern and gut/poly last pretty good.

also gut/poly hybrid is not for durability. i use it for its particular feel. main feel of string bed is from "main" strings.

Im sure that some multis dont saw poly mains, or at least they pop up before any grooves start to appear on the poly mains.
