I saw the IW women's final umpire being presented with an expensive watch.
Do umpires deserve this?
Better question: why do you possibly care?
Yes, they are very underpaid....
Well, economics is a matter of demand and supply.
Why not give prizes to the ball-persons and linespeople and the water guy and the security guards too?
I guess Woodrow will agree!
if they call the nadal out for time violation and other cheating stuff, a little bonus wouldn't be unappropriate.
Did he ever get a prize?
Ball kids, linespeople & security guards are a dime a dozen, not so much for umpires I imagine.
Difference is that they at least need to move
The umpire in the Isner/Nalbandian match deserved half of Isner's paycheque.
NO. you deserve more...
well said sureshs -- people who have to move a great deal should be compensated handsomely. By this analysis, you and your colleagues in science, sitting at a laptop and barely moving, do not warrant compensation? Dopey thread; it's not an appealing trait that you moan when someone else receives a gift. It really shouldn't bother you so much. At what age were you weaned?
only after getting through a match that Andy Roddick Loses.
The prize, a Bulova watch, is that what we are talking about?
Those watches are expensive
i've never seen a security guard move anything more than their lips at lunchtime and i work in the industry
A good pair of glasses or maybe binoculars would be appropriate
That was a hint/permission to start calling top players for time violations.
These days umpires are also getting Maui Jim sunglasses for free as part of the promotion.
Maybe you should apply for the job if you're jealous of this.
I've gotten three nice Tiffany bowls for chairing three finals at the U.S. Open. And I deserved every one of them.
I donno about others but the umpire who did the fed isner final, is the nicest guy. so He Deserves a Nice Watch !
Wasn't it Mohammed?
I like it that he is cheerful all the time. Must be the money.
They should receive bonuses for accuracy of calls and for handling things properly.
After al the verbal abuse they usually have to endure, umpires deserve that and more.
Suresh is in science ?
Oh dear !
It's just a watch, it's not like he got a bigger trophy than Federer.
I mean, of all of the people to be jealous of, he picks those who are already underpaid.
I am not........
The ones who suffer through a Roddick match do, but that's usually just a first round, so sadly they don't get one.
Wow! No way? Who needs the $1 million prize, I'm telling my kids to stop with the tennis lessons and take up umpiring.
