Do you agree with Massu and his tirade?

I am getting the impression that people on this board are siding with Massu. Do you think he is justified in acting the way that he did in his match? I think it is ridiculous. He didn't just throw his racket. He beat it to a pulp one time, repeatedly. It is one thing to hit your racket on the ground, but to sit there and smash it against the backstop 3,4, and 5 times is a joke. He is a poor excuse for a tennis player in a gentleman's game. I know that he was out there for 4 and a half hours, but give me a break. He should have been tossed. If this is entertainment to your eyes then you probably should turn the tv to some wrestling or perhaps something with less class. I just have a real problem with younger players seeing this type of behavior and thinking that it is acceptable. I think it is hilarious that he said that the umpire for his match will never work another one of his matches. Hahaha...Does he think that the umpire would want to work another one?? I wouldn't want to do anything except cheer for everyone the he plays against. What are your thoughts? Each person has the right to their own opinion on this...I think it is kind of interesting that something like this gives tennis a person to dislike or cheer against.

I don't know if I agree with it, but I think there needs to be more of a standard with chair umpires in tennis. Seeing Safin smack racquets against the ground, pick it up, looks at it and keeps playing, without getting called. Although I didn't see the clip of him smashing the first one, I saw the finished product. And did he even break the one he smacked against the backdrop? Didn't look like he was hitting it that hard...

Hindsight being 20/20 and all...

Why in the world did Massu even play the U.S. Open? Coming off his Olympic Gold Medal(s), there was nowhere to go but down. Any way one looked at it, the U.S. Open was going to be an anti-climax - unless he won it, and that was never likely. Surely, he could have gotten away with pulling out of the U.S. Open due to fatigue after all the tennis he played in Athens, and returned to Chile to a hero's welcome.

Instead, he has put a damper on his Gold Medal.

Dumb move to play in Flushing.

Too tired to look up last year's results, but he sort of has to play to protect his ranking for the year. The better he did last year, the more points he has to "defend".

Not to detract from Massu's fine, but he was one-upped in the fine department.

"Massu's fine was not the biggest of the day.

American Taylor Dent, who lost to Paul Henri Mathieu, was charged $1,500 for obscene language." bbc.co.uk

I mostly agree. If he is going to get penalized for smashing his racquet, the umpires have to be consistent. You rarely see Safin get penalized for smashing his racquet.

Massu was also swearing up a storm on the court. His behavior was atrocious that day and he should've been fined a lot more than $1,000.00 His behavior was not becoming of an Olympic gold medalist.

He behaved fine in the Olympics. Could there be a correlation here between respect for the Olympic games as opposed to ATP tennis?

I think the IGF put it best:

Nicolas Massu was fined $1,000 at the U.S. Open (news - web sites) on Friday for throwing his racket during a loss to Sargis Sargsian in which the double Olympic gold medalist forfeited the opening game of the fifth set. Oddly enough, the international Gymnasitics Federation(IGF) suggested that Massu might save face by relinquishing his medal to Sargosian.
