Do you guys think Djokovic can still be a contender for RG?

Can Djoker still be a contender at RG?

he doesn't win against a fit Thiem, and as a distant 3rd fav he would need quite some luck.
i doubt that DJ will focus much on RG anymore, but he can still always make a SF.

Contender - Yes

Do I think he will ever win it again - No

Then again Thiem is supposed to be Nadal's successor there, so anything is possible.

There will not be any well established next generation in tennis, on any surface, till the day when all the big 3 hang their racquet or age wears them out

RG Final 2019:
Djokovic vs Ferrer

Corrected it

Yes. If he is able to regain his best form, he contender for every single tournament next year no matter of surface. Clay might prove his weakest surface from here on but he will have chances there unlike Federer who lacked ground game in his thirties.

Federer lacked ground game in 30s??
Wow, that's the joke of the year

It's totally dependent on Rafa. If Rafa isn't playing or is somehow eliminated, yes he has a chance. Against Rafa in form? Virtually no chance. Look what Rafa did to Delpo in France compared to how close they played at Wimbledon a month later. Rafa on Philippe Chatrier is simply beyond what anyone else on tour can come close to right now.

Djoker’s chances of winning RG are quite slim right now. Nadal is dialed in and Thiem is the next best player on clay. Thiem would be a handful for Djoker right now on clay. I would give Djoker a 50% percent chance of beating Thiem and a 10% chance of beating Nadal. And guys like Stan, Delpo, or Cilic could catch him if they redlined as well. Schwartzman on a good day could catch Djoker on a mediocre day.

If he plays at Wimbledon 2018 level and back to before 2016 Wimbledon, he will be 2nd favourite after Nadal.

At his best, Novak is a beast on clay but obviously Rafas the king!

Novak needs to build momentum before then. It’s too early to judge. He needs to back this up by showing great form on the North American hard courts, plus indoor season and start 2019 well. If so, he’ll be in the equation

If Novak is playing well, Thiem would find it difficult to win 2 sets vs him. 3 almost impossible.

Thiem is the guy who gave us this year's French open finals, lets not go overboard with him.

His ground so good, that's why he not even stepping on clay court for two years now.

Federer stopped being contender at FO in 2012. He was 30 years old then.

Totally depends on the day for Thiem. He blew Rafa off the court in Madrid.

Nadal destroying Thiem doesn't mean Djokovic would be able to do the same. Also Thiem can still improve his game and become a bigger threat. (though I wouldn't bet on that)

Djokovic won't destroy Thiem but will convincingly beat him. The guy has no strategy it seems.

36-37 year old is playing tennis at top levels and this is the most important....
How can you imagine the grandpa of tennis to grind out himself on the most physically demanding surface???

He made 2 QFs at RG after 2012 too...

Let me remind you, he played clay even in his worst year (2016). Dont expect more

Let us see that 35/36/37 year old djok/nadal will even be on the tour or not

I think Djoker will struggle on clay because it's his weakest surface. Grass is easily his second best surface. You don't even need to look at the number of titles to conclude that. His serve+return combo works much better on grass than on clay. His serve on clay isn't as effective as on grass.

In his prime I always had the impression that he is better on clay than on grass. Now it changed, maybe grass will be his best surface, who knows.

Even in his prime I felt he was deadlier on grass. At his very peak he lost to Stan in the RG final. I don't see that happening at Wimb.

Yes. It will be interesting to see what happens until RG next year, but I suspect Novak will be a solid 2nd favourite there in 2019. If he plays as well as expected, he's way better than Thiem, and after that he'll battle it out with Nadal. He'll probably lose, but he's definitely a contender.

I think Djoker should stop killing himself on Clay and rather focus on Hard court Slams and Grass for next 3-4 years..
Let Nadal have 15 Roland Garros instead try to peak on other 3 slams where he is clearly better than Nadal ( even USO in terms of consistency )...

At his peak he also lost to Wawrinka in AO, his best slam. Does it mean he is weak there too? And in his prime in Wimbledon he lost a final to Murray in straight sets. If anything, Murray has less weapons to hurt him than Wawrinka does.

Of course not. All I said was let's see how he handles it. It's been a long time. I'm of the few that thought he would be successful again. Ask anybody since apparently you were in hiding until he won something.
Actually I wasn't hiding. I took a lot of breaks even when he was dominating. I just have periods when I can't be bothered posting. This time it was different though I had personal problems to deal with from december of last year. Didn't really recover till like March.

I hope you're doing ok now :)

That's understandable. Everyone goes through hard times. Glad it worked out for you.
