I like ketchup or mayonnaise on my chips. If it's alongside fish I'll have salt and vinegar or salt and sauce

... Ketchup is nothing but corn syrup and food coloring.
Tomato ketchup actually has a much greater concentration of lycopene than raw tomatoes. Has a bit of vitamin C as well. Food coloring does not provide you with this lycopene. Cooked or stewed tomatoes do. Now, with a name like Ann, you might not be interested in the prostate health side of lycopene. But, for women, it can also provide sun protection, improved heart health and, possibly, lower risk of certain types of cancer (in addition to prostate cancer).

https://draxe.com/lycopene/

Corn syrup or HFCS is primarily a US thing, I believe. Most other areas do not permit the use of HFCS. Some HFCS-free ketchups can be found in the US — you just have to be more conscientious about reading the label. There are also low Na (sodium) versions available.

the opposite was suggested in a review article in the journal "Cancers" in 2011
Thank you. I saw an article a while back saying that a study done in Europe using high doses of lycopene had increased the rates of lung cancer amongst smokers. They were theorizing that the high doses of antioxidants somehow had a synergistic effect with some mutating agents, or something like that (I am not a doctor, but I remember something like that.) So it's good to hear some other studies contradict that. I used to smoke a few years back, and I have always eaten a lot of tomatoes in my diet. I just like tomatoes.

Stopped off a Trader Joe’s for a few items before heading over to Lakshmi Bazaar for my samosas. I noticed that TJs has an Organic Ketchup. No HFCS or corn syrup of any kind. Organic tomatoes. Organic sugar (a mere 2g per serving). Na content was fairly low as well.

No worries. Will probably eat the samosas on my way home — before I get a chance to put any gourmet sauce (ketchup) on them.

Had heard that about smokers and beta carotene quite a few years back. Not heard anything like that with lycopene. Is there beta carotene in tomatoes as there is in carrots?

Bingo. You are right, it's actually the beta carotene. https://www.webmd.com/smoking-cessation/news/20041130/death-stalks-smokers-in-beta-carotene-study

Then again, maybe the lycopene in tomatoes counteracts the beta carotene? Like that old joke about the guy that buys an air humidifier and an air dehumidifier and puts them in the same room to let them fight it out?

No for ketchup.

But I like to put mustard on things. I used to love Dijon when my folks brought it from Europe. Now I have a packet of Weikfield mustard powder and I make it from that. It is very sharp, just love it now and then.

Another thing I used to love was Tabasco sauce. Haven't had it for a long time.

You stopped off at TJ's but did NOT buy dark chocolate ? Sacrilege !!!! :( :(

You could at the very least have bought some chocolate biscotti. You must repent.

edit: dream in life: to live near a TJ.

Then again, wtf named beta carotene? Nothing good ever came from something named beta. From Beta Rays to Betamax video, beta ruins anything it touches.
Beta does not deserve the bad rap (rep) that it gets. Beta-carotene probably just had the misfortune of being discovered or identified 2nd. Beta-carotene is actually quite healthy/beneficial for those of us who are not smokers.

Betamax (Sony) is/was actually a superior format, in a smaller package, to JVC’s VHS. JVC did a better job of marketing, so the inferior product won out. This was not the 1st time this has happened. Nor the last... the Apple Mac OS was vastly superior to Windows, for example.

Beta testing can be cool. I’ve done some. You get your hands on a product or service early... and you get stuff for FREE.

Beta blockers are meds that reduce high blood pressure.

Beta often can refer to bonding in biomolecules. Beta means the bond is above the plane.

From wiki:

Depending on whether the glycosidic bond lies "above" or "below" the plane of the galactose molecule, galactosides are classified as α-galactosides or β-galactosides.

A β-galactoside is a type of galactoside in which the glycosidic bond lies above the plane of the galactose residue

And what makes you think that I didn’t buy any dark choc? Have quite a few TJs in my regular stomping grounds. I have 4 of them that I currently frequent. Will usually drop by a TJ two or 3x a week. On this visit, among other things, I picked up this:

When I stopped at Joes a few nights ago, I picked up these:

Oh you live in heaven, I see. You are a good soul, I see. Three visits to the TJ a week is impressive. Very devout. You are my hero now.

Try the chocolate coated coffee beans. Haven't had them for several years now.

Those are the bomb! I haven't had them in a while, but oh so good. Joe-Joe's are also really good. You'll never go back to Oreos after eating them. I think it's time to make a run to TJ's.

My fries only like to be dipped in ketchup+tabasco mix.

Don't really care for tomatoes in general, but I do eat them in my salad. Found most tomatoes I bought to be tasteless - except the sugar plum tomatoes. Tomatoes in Italy & Greece seem to taste better. Maybe it's the soil.
