Do you lose interest in a major when your idol loses in the first week of a major ?

If your idol loses in the first week of a major, do you lose interest and just go through the motion ? How do you feel when your idol's competitor just bull dozed his opponent after your idol got upset ?

For instance, the USO 2014 finals sucked for many the moment Novak and Fed both lost.

Several Rafa fans were morose in 2009 FO and same when Fed was upset at 2010 Wimb for the first time.

I am not asking if you stop watching the major. Most of us continue to watch every single match all the way through. But do you feel the pain as the tournament progresses ?

I only watch the business end of those. There's nothing more boring than watching peak Fed sloting away some Berer or some other guy wih 1-0-2 in 2nd round of a GS.

I've been spoiled because there have been very few slams in the last 5 years that didn't have either Nadal or Djoko in the final. Only USO 2014 (and Djoko still made it to semi) and W 2012 (and there again Djoko made it to semi). I'm just lucky that my 2 favorites are very consistent in slams, so that losing interest early hasn't been much of a problem at all :)

Depends on who else is left..
I have multiple tiers of players I'm interested in...
Tier 1: Nadal, Fed, djoker, etc...
Tier 2: Nish, Ferrer, Monfils, Tsonga, Verdasco, etc..
Tier 3: Anyone american
Tier 4: Up and comers: Kyrgios, Coric, etc...

If Djoko goes out even in semis, I pretty much don't care about watching the finals. I used to watch when Nadal was around until like 2011 timeframe. But as of now Live Djoko, eat Djoko.

If he isn't there, I'm done regardless if it is first week or second week.

No pain or anything - just accept the loss and move on. It may be a little annoying for a few minutes, but there still tennis to watch. I have no idols, just to clarify.

I stopped reading at the word 'idol'.

I don't have any. I just like tennis. I do have my favourites though, and well... if they lose, well bummer, but just congratulate the winner and move on!

I even watch CH tour and WTA matches when there isn't any tennis from ATP/ITF at mens side , so why should I stopped to watch when my fav was out?
Excepting the loss with more or less grief over it and move on.
My favs aren't bigger than the game itself.

2010 AO would probably count as being in the last 5 years. :)

Depends on whether or not there are any interesting players left in the draw. I still watched the AO final last year, but didn't bother with the USO final.

Do I lose interest when Federer loses early ? I have to be honest, yes I do. Does that mean I completely stop watching? Depends, if Wawrinka or Dimitrov are still in, I'll watch. Otherwise, if there's a good match-up like Djokovic/Nadal, I'll still watch. But for example, last year's USO, Cilic vs Nishikori? Watched none of it and couldn't careless about the results. If I could sum it up, I'd say that when my favorite player(s) or an interesting match-up is about to begin, it's can't miss TV for me. For the rest, if I have nothing better to do, I'll watch, but I won't waste 3-4 hours to watch a Djokovic/Murray snorefest on Sunday if I can be out there playing tennis or doing anything else.

Admittedly, a little bit of interest does go away if my fav player exits early but the Slams are fascinating enough events for me to still be curious to see who battles through to the finals and who eventually takes away the trophy. The one consolation is that you then get to watch the rest of the event relatively stress free as you no longer have as much vested interest in who actually wins!

Yeah obviously, that has to be the case with almost everyone. How could you not have more interest in a slam where your idol is still contending for the title, than after he loses in the early rounds?

This. As a matter of fact I like watching Fed-Nadal and Fed -Murray. easy and it is very stress free.

Whenever Djoko steps on court I get very restless. Heck I have come to the point I cannot watch him live. I will start cribbing the moment he goes a break down!

Is this an admittance that you never ever watched tennis before, say, 2008?
It sure looks like as such.

honestly it depends whether there's something else to do.
if I got nothing better to do, sure ill watch tennis I'm not personally invested in.

If Murray goes out in any tournament, I'll watch who's playing in the next rounds.

When Murray got hammered by Wawrinka at the US Open in 2013, I just followed Wawrinka and I wanted him to win but Djokovic stopped that. I don't get sour grapes, it's a sport.

Well i have no idol and to be honest I like many players and am able to watch a match between Struff and Carreno-Busta and enjoy it :D

In february there was 2 finals the same day, Rotterdam: Wawrinka-Berdych I thought the final was terrible, ball bashing from the baseline both players hitting as hard as they could, ugly stuff.

Later on same day there was a final between Cuevas and Vanni, it was the first final ever for Vanni and he looked tense, he had the break in the third but got broken back. Both players were not really playing great but the dramaturgy of the match was excellent. Cuevas won 7-6 in the third in a very tense tie break.

Lately I remember a few people here enjoying this match between Louhab and Garcia-Lopez.

Top 10 tennis is overrated, not always the best to watch and usually the most predictible.
