Do you think 1 extra day recovery matters for the big 3?

Don't think the stats indicate a big effect.

Pretty random whether the guy with one or two days rest wins, historically, if memory serves.

This was talked about ahead of the 2017 final, and it was pointed out the guy with less rest had won more often.

It matters more the older you are

Exactly, so it will be supremely important for any of them (for Federer more, obviously), especially if they have a long and difficult SF. The scheduling will play a very important role this time around.

Old guys brings their A-game. Is tennis the new boule?

I don't "think" it. I know it.

The AO is the ONLY Slam that gives an extra day to rest to one of the finalists. About time to end with that unfair practice.
Let's just forget that last year it was Nadal who had an extra day rest and still got destroyed. Also, let's forget that he played Thiem in last year's RG who played 4 days in a row.

How can we forget 35yo Federer winning 3 five-setters in the second week of 2017 AO...

From 2014 UO to 2018 AO Federer won eigth 5th sets out of nine. His best score ever in five-setters.

Must mean we get better the older we are, and it can under no circumstances have anything to do with the level on the tour.

It shouldn't matter. Speaking from Nadals perspective. He has been his own worst enemy over the years, rallying for hours in earlier rounds, against guys he should be out there putting away quick.
Admittedly he tries to do that now in slams, but theres no excuses. 1 or 2 days rest before a final doesn't matter, unless youre carrying an injury, or have been grinding 5 setters for 2 weeks.
The top players shouldn't be grinding anything against this field.

Your comment does not invalidate the fact that it is an unfair practice of the AO.

Only because Rafa has benefited some years it doesn't follow that it was fair. All members of the Big 3 have sometimes benefited from the extra rest day at the AO final. And the RG example is irrelevant, because they already incorporated a roof and it will never be repeated again.

The AO is the ONLY Slam where one of the finalists can rest one extra day. They should change that unfair practice.

hmmm.
Roland Garros 2019?
RG 2020 will incororate a roof so it will never happen again.

Currently, only the AO keeps the unfair practice of giving one of the finalists an extra day to rest. They should change that unfair practice.

Both times Nadal had the extra day's rest before the slam final against Djokovic, he lost.
Irrelevant for the point. Djokovic won because he is the AO GOAT but it doesn't change the fact that it was an unfair practice. Federer also had an extra day to rest at the AO 2009 and AO 2017 final. It was unfair in all cases when it benefited Nadal and when it did not benefit him.

The AO is the ONLY Slam where one of the finalists has one extra day to rest. Time to change that unfair practice.

Did you say this last year also?

Why are you lumping Federer in with a guy 5 years younger and 6 years younger? It matters to them all, but for a 38 year old it’s far more important. Six years difference at that age is massive.

sure, he had 6 years more of training, so he will beat them easily.

If it really is unfair, then it should be borne out in the results. Can someone tabulate the finalist who had the extra day of rest and how often they actually won it?

One thing is clear: The semifinals of a Grand Slam tournament should not be played on different days, in addition to being controversial it gives an additional physical advantage to the player who disputed this instance 24 hours before the other finalist.
This should be eradicated bluntly.

Yes, it was unfair last year as well.

Funny how you take so much offense to this practice of the AO giving one player an extra day's rest. It's like, how does this affect you? You're never going to be one of those players that has to play on one less day of rest, so why do you even care so much?

Well some round will have to be played on different days unless they all go the Wimbledon route and take the first Sunday off.

Already incorporated a roof? Literally dead last to do so and it's only one court. If it rains heavily, it will still lead to scheduling mishaps.

RG incompetence is obviously irrelevant for you because Nadal consistently wins it, while at the best organized slam he has 1 title, even though he himself had advantage of extra day rest a couple of times.

Yes, it matters, sometimes more, sometimes less... Depending to scheduling and duration of particular sf's. Good thing is that ao dont have schedueling problems in later stages thanks to roofs...

Ao is maybe best in scheduling, rarely some player suffer of playing day after day, at least I remember as that.
Wimbledon is ok after roofs installed, earlier it was pain in ass... Uso similar...
And we get to most unfair tournament, rg, slam stucked in 19th century... When I remember 19 edition ... They practically didn't gave chance Thiem (or Novak), winner was known in Friday... And it wasn't the first time...

Irrelevant. Just because Rafa lost, it doesn't mean he still didn't benefit. Without that extra day of rest, maybe he would've gotten dominated even more?

Or how about as some commentators were saying during the match, that having the extra day off messed up his timing with the ball. Since it is longer than the normal time between grand slam play?

Grand Slams should be scheduled in 3 weeks span instead of 2. Period.
