Do you think age is why Ivan Lendl won't coach Tomas Berdych

In my opinion Tomas Berdych is one of those underrated players who should at least just win a Grandslam in his career.

There have been a lot of discussion regarding if Ivan Lendl will coach Tomas Berdych. As awesome as that would sound, I think the reason why it won't possibly happen is because of Berdych's age.

Berdych is 29 years old and chances of a player winning GS at that age are slim and maybe Lendl does not want to coach someone who's chances are slim.

What do you think?

One reason Ivan Lendl was willing to train Andy Murray was because he was willing to work hard. Lendl would probably encourage Berdych to stop using Twitter all the time.

i think he may have been telling the truth when he said he was too busy to travel a full schedule. he said some of his kids are home now, hes playing more senior tournaments, and he has more commitments.

I am sure after a long career of constant travel these ex player coaches are just dying to be full time travel coaches and be in a service position Instead of commander in chief. it must make there wives real happy too.

You wanna know why Lendl won't coach Berdych?

Plainly before Lendl would consider coaching Berdytch he would require him to stop playing Monica Lewinski to his rivals Bill Clinton.

Just a technicality:
Berdych may be a player who should win at least "one tournament in the grand slam category of tournaments" (or a "major"). I know it's hard to say which term is correct for these four tournaments, but a "grand slam" is definitely the achievement of winning all four "grand slam tournaments" in the span of one calender year.

Your answer is: Major.

This has been settled between the people, who know what they are taalking about.

Berdych is simply one of those players who is happy with where they are and doesn't have the hunger to take the last step. He enjoys his life and tennis, gets his money etc. If he is gonna win a GS title or not is something he don't give a crap about.

I think he's considering it still. I can see them getting along very well.
He's not too old yet.

Yeah a strong era behemoth who would've taken away all slams from Federer during 2004-2007 period...

hyperbole much

no one has even come close to saying that; at least i haven't.

Berdych would have won around 2 slams facing the same competition Federer did from 04-07...

He'd have had a big fat zero slams in any era .

I don’t know Berdych personally. I get the sense that the same is true for most people posting on here.

The guy is in his late 20s, ranked #7 in the world, and has earned close to $20 million over the course of his career. I am older than he is, have not earned close to $20 million, and, if my profession had rankings, I doubt I’d be anywhere near #7. LOL.

All of this is to say that, even if Berdych never wins a slam, he's got nothing to be embarrassed about.

1) The age could be one reason. At this stage, there is a little room for improvement, certainly with his attitude.

2) Lendl is a very accomplished player and has done great with Murray. He partied ways with Murray on his own terms and with great respect to what he did to him. So, why would Lendl work with Berdych and risk his reputation as a coach?

3) Maybe he does not want the full-season traveling around the globe. After all, he is not young anymore and has other commitments.

EXACTLY!

and to top it off he has one of the best looking GFs in the game.

he gets hate from those who are bitter...

Berdych is hated for his attitude. Lendl knew he was never changing so it's probably not so much age as it is attitude.

Well first of all I think one of the reasons is that Berdych simply always bends over for the very good ones. Lendl wouldn't want to coach such a player who even declares before a match that he hopes to win at least 3-4 games. A guy who is in the top 10 for so long like Berdych shouldn't talk like that. At least he should say that "I will do my best to win", not "I just hope I won't get too trashed".

Murray never said things like this. He always went into a match with the desire of winning, which is why, even before Lendl he was able to score some big wins over the other Big 4 members. He had the right mentality and the potential to be somebody. He just needed a mental boost(as in more belief in big moments) from somebody more experienced. Lendl saw Murray's potential and he knew that with the right coaching Murray would indeed improve both mentally and game wise.

So Murray already had that potential to be great. With Berdych is a different story. He never had Murray's potential. And Lendl knows it. Yes he has a nice game but that doesn't mean it is slam champion material.

But with the right coach maybe Berdych would have improved in some departments and even with his limited game he could have done something more than he has done so far. But I assume he would have done something sooner if he really cared about his tennis career. Fact is he didn't take any measures in the last 5 years.

Next year he will turn 30. He is too old to win something big now. He had a large window of opportunities to exploit for many years, but he didn't do anything and he only has himself to blame for this.

Berdych, at his best, is a fine player.
Ester is a fine lady.

But he isn't winning GS tourneys in any era. He isn't that good.

Skeletor burdych seems too happy coasting along in the top 10 picking up his money.

Lendl says win win win WIN,..not amble amble drift fail LOSE.

Well done.

I agree with all that think Lendl doesn't think Berdych is worth the effort (and not because of age - because of potential). Lendl has nothing to prove - he took Murray who was a perennial bridesmaid and got him to 2 majors and an Olympic Gold.

Now if Fed, Nadal, Djokovic, and Murray retired in December... :)

Not sure about Berdych winning slams during 2004-2007. But I admit he probably would have won a few more games at the WTF (Masters Cup).

Good luck against the trio of Hewitt, Roddick and Safin, let alone Federer.. Heck, Berdych would be lucky to scoop up just one slam from 2001-2002 and according to everyone here that was an incredibly weak period. He isn't winning a GS, ever and a hypothetical one goes to him only if he avoids Safin until the final (2002 AO). In this hypothetical he could still easily meet Safin in the SF and he would be beaten black and blue if so. So extremely slim chance of Berdych winning a slam in any era.

Just face it, he is one of Nadal's weaker competitors..

Lendl stated that he saw a lot of himself in Andy, and the reason he was so willing to help.
Berdych not so much, although I think Ivan would still love to see another Czech Major winner. (the first since Petr Korda in the 1998 AO).

Lendl wouldn't coach Berdych at any time because Berdych isn't good enough, period. It has nothing to do with Berdych's age and Lendl is astute enough to recognize that.
