Do you think any player will get close to winning 40 singles titles without winning a Grand Slam like Lendl?

Lendl time was very different. I apologize for my language but he won't have balls to do so in today's game. 2 week long masters and nowhere to hide with 96 players draws.

When Lendl won the 1984 French Open, his first Grand Slam, he had won 40 singles titles already.

Do you think any player will get close to winning 40 singles titles without winning a Grand Slam like Lendl?

Zverev - 19 titles
Rublev - 14 titles
Ruud - 10 titles
Tsistspas - 9 titles
Zverev is halfway there, practically.
He could finish his career with 40 titles and zero GS titles.
Very difficult? Yeah!
Impossible? No!

Lendl was an absolute phenom and won 15 tournaments in 1982. But he choked away a lot of slam finals, both early and late in his career. That's the legitimate knock on him.

Nobody is going to win 40 titles now at the age of 24, none of these guys aside from Alcaraz are anywhere near Lendl's greatness. Consider he won three ATP events in three straight weeks on three different continents.

Zverev joins pre-June 1984 Lendl in having won multiple YEC titles and no grand slam titles.

Now I'm certainly not putting Zverev in the same league as Lendl (I personally found watching Lendl warm-up more interesting than watching Zverev play in general). But through also winning the Olympic gold medal in 2021 he has 3 titles across the 2 biggest events outside the slams, beating Djokovic en-route to winning all 3. Lendl also won the WCT Finals (a very important tournament at the time) in 1982 beating McEnroe in the final, alongside his back to back Masters titles in 1981 (brushing aside McEnroe in their semi-final) and 1982 (destroying Connors and McEnroe back to back with insanely good performances).

Lendl had some other insane feats away from the slams by that point, including winning 5 tournaments in 5 successive weeks during the fall of 1981 (with a change of surface from clay to indoor hard / carpet between the 2nd and 3rd of those tournaments), a perfect 40-0 record in ‘official’ indoor matches in 1982 etc. Plus he had led Czechoslovakia to Davis Cup glory in 1980, winning all 7 singles and 3 doubles matches that he played in, including a very hat-trick against Vilas and Clerc in Buenos Aires in the semi-final.

I still find it hilarious that he was completely schooled by Mac over 6 consecutive sets that they contested on clay in 1984 in Forest Hills, Düsseldorf and RG, but still turned the tables to beat him in Paris. Then during the summer of 1985 he was completely schooled by Mac in finals in both Stratton Mountain and Montreal (one of the most hilarious matches I’ve ever seen in terms of temper tantrums from both players), but still turned the tables to beat him in New York and finally win the prize that he coveted the most. No wonder Mac tried to deny / ignore their rivalry for quite a while.

Also, he had only turned 24 a couple of months previously.

Have faith that he will win a Slam. Once Djokovic is not in Slam-winning form and Nadal is retired, Alcaraz won‘t win every Slam and there will be a few Slams available for other young players. Sinner might not win 40 titles though.
I just have a feeling for him it’s going to take a while before he wins a slam. But my best guess it will take sinner around 20 titles before he wins one

@socallefty what I can say though, out of all the top ten players, Sinner has the largest room for improvement and is currently fourth in the atp race. I think he will finish top 4 this year and will be either 3rd or 2nd next year.

People don’t play in as many tournaments now, so I don’t think it‘s possible. Linda had played like 550 to 600 matches through that 1984 RG

He seems to be 8th on the live race on the ATP site. He is in the top 3 of his young generation currently behind Alcaraz and Rune - to my eyes, they both seem to have more hand skills than him and might improve faster than him, but Sinner hits hard on both wings, returns well and will be a threat in the second week of future Slams. But he should watch out for players behind him currently like Musetti, Nakashima, Lehecka, Fils, Shelton, Draper etc. also as they are all getting better with good talent also.

He’s joint tied for fifth with Tsitsipas in the race to Turin, Rublev just won a title. But I think he will finish top 4 given how good he is on hard court. My best guess top three should be a goal for Sinner with a masters title next year, if he doesn’t win one at Canada/Cincinnati

He’s 8th in the ranking, not in the race

Lendl s time was different. Tournaments weren't the most taxing. Prize money was the best source of income.

In those days everyone played a lot particularly lendl and martina and won a lot of tournaments

Adjusted for modern times how many titles would that be for a player today approximately?

These days it seems impossible, but who knows, maybe Zverev can do something similar.

Zverev is worth $40 million or so despite that.
A major wouldn't really add much to his bank account.
He can just play 2 Masters tournaments and earn the same as he would from winning a major.
