With the amount of time he’s spent in the top 10 and top 5, do you believe that Fritz has kind of underachieved overall? I never thought he would win a Major, but he is a Major Finalist along with making the YEC Finals.

I guess what kind of surprised me is that he has only won 10 titles overall, one being a Masters and one being a 500 level with eight 250 titles. I guess with the amount of time he’s been in the top 5-10 I would have expected him to have around 15-20 titles with a few more 500s and maybe another Masters.

I’m curious to see what you guys think. I don’t think he is a bad player by any means. It’s just a little surprising hasn’t won more imo. At this rate Shelton might end up passing him in titles within a year or two, since he’s already won 6 titles.

What does everyone else think? Looking forward to your opinions. Thanks for participating:)

Given his weaknesses like return of serve, forward and lateral movement, I would argue he overachieved. Deep runs at ever slam barring French Open. One of the most capable grass court players on the tour and performs good on HC as well. And most importantly has Made Zverev his pigeon. IS he gonna win a slam? He might on grass if he is lucky.

He has curiously the same hardware as Ruud, a masters title and an Atp 500. He could add more to his trophy cabinet but I think he is just a really solid player who lacks the extra touch to add more to his trophy cabinet in terms of big titles. I could be wrong of sure but I think his ceiling just is not super high. Rublev whom I rate him as a worse player has a higher ceiling.

A big hitter, strong serve, forehand, backhand, poor mover but his other strengths make up for it. He's smart too, very methodical, but his biggest weakness is mentally imploding on himself. He has the potential to win slams but he always self destructs.

He seems to lack that extra something to win more masters titles and Atp 500s, let alone slams. But I might be wrong

I find the Zverev rivalry a little odd. He picked up 6/7 wins during his best year in 24, and in one of Zverev’s worst years in 25. Of course he earned them, just strange situation in a way. I look forward to their QF match coming up. Think it will be a close one:)

Just by looking at his longevity in the top 10, I would think he would have more of a Rublev career accomplishment wise. Rublev has 2 Masters, a number of 500s and 17 titles overall. It’s kind of what brought to mind making this topic.

4UTRMoutet might have the right answer with the imploding. Maybe that’s what has held him back from winning more titles? Anyway great posts so far:) Thanks for your opinions.

Ruud also spent a lot of time in the top ten ( though Fritz will spend more time in the top ten most likely) and has only a masters title and an atp 500. Even though Fritz has a higher ceiling and Ruud would not be able to dominate Zverev

Yeah that’s a good point. It’s kind of what has me puzzled about Fritz, since Ruud also has 5 more titles overall I think. I can see it both ways as underachieved when it comes to titles, but also overachieved due to his movement and weak ROS as kangaroo1973 mentioned, and perhaps to imploding as 4UTRMoutet had mentioned. Guess Inshoukd have made a third option for Idk on the poll lol.

I do not think Fritz implodes, I think he has had physical problems like his recent knee problems and he lacks the extra factor to win bigger titles though he is extremely skilled and consistent. He also went up a level when he was already 26-27 so I think age might also be affecting his ROS numbers .Of course I might be wrong and he might win other masters titles and atp 500s or even a slam. Ruud is an odd one because he has been extremely consistent at big tournaments (he has 17 semifinals at big events) but you would think someone with that consistency would have more big wins. This is a reason many people seem to be unsure about his abilities. I have seen him compared to Tsitsipas, Fritz and Rublev, Berrettini and De Minaur, Norrie and Paul and even to Bublik and Kyrgios.

Yes.

He had Novak and Rafa on the ropes in the 2021 Australian Open and 2022 Wimbledon tournaments respectively, with both of them visibly ailing from injuries, but he couldn't take advantage.

Regardless of talent or expectation, that's underachieving.

Fritz was not as good as he is now then. I do not think he has underachieved. I think he is an extremely skilled player who lacks an x factor

He should have made the final at Wimbledon 2022, but other than that, I can’t think of a failure on his side. He has a good serve and forehand but very limited movement, average hands and RoS, and a lack of inherent clutch gene; given those restrictions, I think he’s essentially done the best he can. Like AdM… you can only do so much with what you’re given

he could have won more than one master 1000 and probably the ATP finals. Novak barely won against him in 2022 in Turin and he could have beaten Ruud.

Ruud used to be very good on hard courts in 2022, he had 5 top ten wins and 3 big finals. Fritz has not put himself in the position to win another masters title since he has made only semifinals since winning the biggest title of his career

No. I think a 1000 title and a slam final is just fine for him.
But this Sunday when he has a slam, I think he’ll have just about overachieved!

Most players overachieved 2017-2023, bc level was rather low except for the ATGs, and Big3 played a very reduced calender for many years, so winning Masters and below wasnt that hard.

I think he should have won more than 500 titles, but 10 titles seems reasonable to me.
Since his breakthrough in 2022, he’s won at least two titles for four consecutive years—which, when you put it that way, isn’t a bad pace.

I do not.

I think he's doing about what I expected from watching him over the years. Good player, deserved top 10 main-stay who could maybe win another masters and make another Slam final but I'm not confident he can win one with the players he'll have to go through these days. Yeah he's maybe got Zverev figured out but Sinner/Alcaraz/Djokovic all have him beat.

Why don't you think De Minaur is top ten worthy btw? Actually his heads to heads against top players are pretty decent though his win rate against top ten players is low

I just think Fritz is a better player. The best way I can describe it is like having a fetch the ball contest vs a dog or a human. The dog will more consistently get to everything and return it directly to you but playing fetch with a human and they'll return it back with power and make you fetch too. De Minaur feels like more like the dog, more consistent but less threatening.

Fritz is a lot better than De Minaur but it does not mean De Minaur is not top ten caliber. Weak top ten players usually peak at no 10

I don't think he underachieved , I wouldn't say he overachieved either but he definitely maxed out his talents with some of the limitations he has ala Ferrer.
He doesn't choke much, defeats who he's supposed to beat - very consistent . He's also a match up nightmare for Z who's a better player. But looking at his slow footwork, how he perfected his serve, at how he's very very solid from the baseline from both wings I defo think he maximized what he can become pretty much.

When I look at his game I don't see where he can get better except maybe taking more risks against better playewrs but that comes with it's own risk.

OH no. It seems that Fritz has injured his knee. So Zed is gonna reach Wimbledon final. Great, Just great. At least he is gonna get steamrolled by Sinner. At least some satisfaction

Good answer! Will he win any slams? Absolutely, positively NO!

Massively overachieved, to his credit. With that kind of movement and mediocre groundies , he gets by due to sheer grit and an amazing serve.

Fritz has done very well, relative to his natural ability.

He has less natural ability than Kyrgios yet has achieved more.

Kyrgios skill wise is not top ten level for the standards of a good era, he had an extremely high ceiling but there have been some other top 15 playes with a very high ceiling albeit not quite as high as Kyrgios'. Borna Coric also had a very high ceiling and peaked at world number 12 and won a masters title. Kyrgios overall was not consistent enough to be top ten level for the standards of a good era. Sure I do not think he is worse than Shapovalov, Bublik and Tiafoe so in his 2016 form he would have made the top ten at some point in the 2020s but he just was not consistent enough at the big tournaments to be a top ten player in a good era. He finished just a year in the top 20
