Do you want to know why Nalbandian is so overrated on these forums?

For all the skepticals.....

Watch these highlights of 2005 Tennis Masters Cup Finals, where Nalbandian beats prime Federer with a spectacular display of shotmaking. Amazing backhands, the best backhand of an era for sure, amazing touch, amazing volleys, perfect movement. Absolutely outclassing Federer, and not overpowering him. 100% natural talent, and he went to play that tourney because they called him, he was substitute and he was fishing, not playing tennis in 10 days before that tournament. Just in case someone wants to point that Federer was either injured or rusty, it's false, and it was denied by Federer himself in the post-match interviews where he gave all the credit to fit-Dave and said he wasn't injured or rusty at all.

Part 1
Part 2

Want more? what about 2007 Madrid Master.

Final vs Federer
Vs Nadal
Vs Djokovic

Let's now go to Paris.

Vs Federer
Destroying Nadal

The real reason why Federer only won one slam in 2003: David Nalbandian. Who stopped him at the Australian Open and the Us Open. And let's not forget, he was robbed in the 2003 Us Open semifinal against Roddick.

2003 Australian Open
2003 Us Open

Unforgettable quotes:

Rafael Nadal said:
I'm afraid to play to his backhand.
Roger Federer said:
He has one of the best backhands I've ever seen

Fat Dave, even though now he passes more time injured than healthy, even though he doesn't like to train and loves unhealthy food and parties. He is forever in our hearts.

I wish he understands that his body won't allow him to play successfully for more than two or three years, and he puts all the required effort to come back and train as hard as the top guys do, so we can see him again disputting slams semifinals, and winning some Masters tournaments.

I hope you know understand why fatDave is so beloved here.
Feel free to add any info.

Look, it was an amazing match by Nalbandian. I love watching Nalby and Federer play as they don't wait for the other to make an error. Both play attacking tennis and are capable of hitting some insane angles. Absolutely stunning, but attempting to say that Federer wasn't injured of rusty is ludicrous. He hadn't practiced for quite some time due to a ligament injury.

Yeah, that thing on his ankle is a fashion accessory.

Nalbandian an extreme talent a joy to watch.

Nalbandian is very talented, a pleasure to watch, has arguably the best two-handed bh. It's the pity that he is one of the biggest underachievers: lazy, undisciplined, caring for chicken and chicks more than for tennis. Same as Marat Safin.

oh man, i better stop watching that videos of aggasi and nalbo, because i wouldnt be able to watch this peace of s*** of tennis that players play today.

Please. Djokovic and Nadal hit as hard as both of these guys. However, unlike these two, they have insane speed and flexibility; hence the points are longer and there are fewer outright winners.

i read thousand posts on here calling nalbandian fat, lazy etc

are you all his reallife buddys or where do you have such infos on nalbandian and his life?!? please dont answer to me with oh look hes fat

It is ridiculous to suggest Federer was at his best at the 2005 TMC. He was moving at 60% at best right from the start and even in the super weak field which was missing all the big guns except Federer, he nearly lost every match he played (except the semi vs Gaudio, LOL at Gaudio even in the semis of the WTF on a fast court).

As for what Federer supposably said, so he was being a gracious loser, which he would be raked over the coals for otherwise, what did you expect. He was probably thrilled to even make the final and stunned to come so close to winning the event given what bad shape he was in to even play.

Put Nalbandian of the 2005 WTF up against Safin or Federer from the 2005 Australian Open, Federer at Wimbledon 2005, or Nadal at the 2005 French Open and it is pretty obvious what happens.

Nalbandian's most impressive tournament ever was Paris 2007. His most impressive match ever was the quarterfinals vs Federer at that event.

(a) Federer was on crutches 2 weeks before the WTF began. He was most definitely injured, irrespective of what he said in the post-match interview.
(b) 6-7, 6-7, 6-2, 6-1, 7-6 does not constitute ownage.

Conclusion: OP is high on something.

+1. Nobody who owned Fed (atleast for a while) can be called overrated.

Hewitt, Henman, grandpa Agassi (already 31 and 32 years old), and many others "owned" Federer at that point in time. Yet we dont hear nonsense how peak Henman or even peak Hewitt are better than anyone else, and how they are the more talented than Federer or Nadal.

Nalbandian here killing Agassi's backhand. Impossible to say that Agassi had a better backhand like it's said here so many times. David dominated everything from that side, and more a lot more bh winners.

How old was Agassi. Lets see how Nalbandian is playing at 33. Just look at how he is playing this year at only 29. Also 33 year old Agassi still won that match over prime Nalbandian.

Agassi is a candidate for the GOAT backhand. Nalbandian cant even be compared.

nalbandian never "owned" federer. but he did meet him on eyelevel a few times and not alot of ppl can say that about themselves

How so exactly though? It has already been pointed out the period Nalbandian built up his large early H2H lead was during a period Federer lost nearly every match he played vs Hewitt, Kafelnikov, Rafter, grandpa Agassi, Henman, basically everyone and their dog (and Roddick of course, lol). Since Federer began his dominance he is 11-3 vs Nalbandian I believe. So what has Nalbandian done that many others havent.

Nalbandian never beat God Mode Federer like Marat Safin did at the 2005 Australian Open. Nor did he beat a fairly good Federer in straight sets in numerous slams like Djokovic did at the 2011 Australian Open and 2008 Australian Open. Nor won the majority of their matches with Federer while he was ranked in the top 2 and regularly winning slams/reaching almost slam final like Murray did.

Yes, how convenient to underestimate Nalbandian victories against Federer in the 2003 Australian Open and 2003 Us Open. Clearly if it wasn't by David, Federer could have won two more slams. The same year he won Wimbledon and The Masters Cup against Agassi.

Nalbandian never beat God Mode Federer like Marat Safin did at the 2005 Australian Open.
Now this is just subjetive bull$hit. See those videos above, impossible to say that that is not God mode. Federer was playing great there.

Edit:

Roger Federer said:
"I feel like the better guy won today. He was better, way better, in the third and fourth and fifth," commented Federer.

"I always say the winner deserves it more than the loser, even though I don't feel like a loser at all, because the season was sogreat. The match I played today and the whole tournament I playedis for me still a great satisfaction.

"But He did well and deserves to win, no question about it."

Will you say again that he was injured? If it wasn't by David, Federer would have tied the 1984 McEnroe season record.

The post match interview was posted here a few years ago, and Fererer said his foot didn't bother him AT ALL, and that it was all David's merit. I'll check if I can find it.

EDIT: this is the link, but is not online anymore :(

Your memory must be playing tricks on you. The interview is here:

Fed is very clear that he was less than 100%; he said he had too much fatigue in his legs to push off them properly. Not that that was any mystery that we needed a presser for; he called the trainer during the match and told him he had trouble feeling his legs.

Prime Federer in normal shape did not have a run of play against him of 6-2, 6-1, 4-0 against anyone, sorry.

If you've ever been on crutches you'd know that your leg muscles atrophy quickly and it takes some time to get them back to normal strength.

Yes but in many people's eyes Nalbandian plays more beautiful tennis than Hewitt and even Agassi and Henman so obviously he'll tend to be a bit overrated at times in comparison.

However Nalbandian also beat Fed in 2005 and 2007 when Fed was very good form (Fed was playing well both in 2005 TMC and in 2007 Madrid & Paris) so he has to get some credit for that.

im not talking about the early wins over fed. im talking about matches in feds peak

i think fed played pretty well in the 05 masters cup final. obviously not god mode but no one has ever challenged him in god mode. feds god mode was untouchable outside clay. the AO match against safin wasnt god mode either. i agree he played better against safin than he did against nalbandian there but not by a huge ways

and nalbandian was the only one who managed to stand up to fed on HC in 2007 beating him at back to back masters 1000 tournaments

Forgot about Canas? Though I agree in a sense that Fed was playing way better in 2007 indoor season IMO than in IW and Miami that year.

Federer made a combined total of 192847658474625 shanks in both encounters with Canas. You couldn't even make a highlight reel convincing even if you tried.

Federer was steamrolling through Madrid in 2007 until Nalbandian put a stop to it in the final, so that alone gains my respect.

I think Federer's endurance took a hit from that injury in late 2005, but he was still making plenty of spectacular shots. I remember he basically tanked at the end of the 4th set to conserve energy for the 5th. He turned it on after going down 4-0, and served for the match...so he wasn't in as bad of shape as some in this thread are making it sound.

He definitely wasn't 100%, but he was good enough to double bagel Gaudio in the SF and beat the likes of Ljubicic, Coria, and Nalbandian (first meeting) in the round robin.

He was just streakier with that black ankle brace on in general, as you could see by the 2006 Australian Open. He'd absolutely dominate for a set, then get careless and lose one, then recover and blow his opponent away in the end. I think his conditioning was hurt more than his explosive movement.

Nalbandian has the best backhand by far in Virtua Tennis 3 for the PSP. That thing is a lazer. I can score winners off the backhand at my leisure!:)

Nalby's back to back wins in the 2007 indoor season are indeed impressive.

But 2005 TMC Fed not his normal self and not in shape to play a 5-setter, as he said himself in his interview and as was glaringly obvious to anyone watching the match. This is the match that his third-person quote "Roger Federer doesn't retire" comes from, 'cause most journos watching the match expected him to retire given his physical condition.

He said in his interview that Nalby got nervous in the 5th which enabled him to make his late almost-comeback.
