Does anyone else hope federer only ties sampras' record?

I dont know if I'm the only one, but I'll be quite candid in saying that while federer is my favorite player, part of me only hopes he ever ties sampras' grandslam record, without winning Roland Garros, so that we can continue the debate over who was better. I mean it can always be argued, but if fed gets like 15 GS and maybe one of those is RG, he can safely consider himself on top of Sampras. Of course the Laver folks will argue for him, which is valid enough and enriches the debate even more. Don't get me wrong, if fed wins RG and/or breaks sampras' record, I'll be happy for him as he's my favorite player, but I like the idea of having a constant debate over who the best is.

Barring an act of God, sudden death or a career-ending injury, it's inevitable that Federer will pass Sampras' record of 14 Majors-probably by around this time next year.

I have no opinion, one way or another. I'm happy that I've been able to watch BOTH Sampras and Federer for the entire course of their careers. I still believe-though I don't want to open this can of worms yet AGAIN-that Sampras faced superior competition and was mentally tougher (though Fed is no wilting daisy in the mental toughness department-he's a competitor), but all the same, Fed's accomplishments are amazing and his current 4.5-year dominance is one for the tennis history books. Winning RG or achieving a calendar Grand Slam are not necessary, IMO, for Fed to be considered GOAT, though a RG win WOULD probably seal the GOAT deal for him among many people who would never acknowledge it otherwise.

your not alone. i would like to see fed only tie sampras also. while i dont care about having a constant debate over whos the greatest and even though i really like federer, sampras is still my favorite player. for that reason alone i would like to see fed tie sampras and then we could say that they were both amazing and then just debate over who was more dominant.

i 100% agree with you on this phil...i am just grateful that i was able to watch both sampras and federer and its just a matter of time now before federer passes 14 slams...

Unfortunately for you, the end of Pete's record is inevitable. You might get your wish in Federer only tying the record this year, but by 2009, the record will surely be broken. There's still a slim chance that Federer breaks the record this year, but most likely, he'll only tie with 14. Think of it this way, you have 2008 to cherish Pete's record.

He'll never win a slam again. Sampras will be GOAT.
That's exactly what they said about Federer in 2005 when he lost the first 2 slams of the year. The poster known as TS and I had a bet on whether Federer would win a slam in 2005 or not. I obviously won the bet. You count him out if you want, but you'll get egg on your face when Federer breaks the slam record.

Well I never cared for Sampras, just my opinion, so am definitely hoping Federer passes him.

I have the same hopes as OP, I think its only fair. As for the chances, unles some injury happenes, I really dont see how could he not pass the record, just by winning in Wimby ? I think even if he is at 15 or 16 GS, and even if this is the GOAT worthy achievement, someone pointed out and very well - he needs Roland Garros to seal it. In my mind when you say Aggasi or Samras I kind of tend to think, what a great rivalry and I never think there was much between them. Sampy won at wimby Aggasi everywhere and their matches were spectacle. SO id say he needs a career slam to rap up the GOAT for sure.
