Nope. He's been constantly approaching gassed in third sets this season let alone deep into a 5 set match and his results on clay historically have been much worse than on the other surfaces. In fact, has he ever won a single event on clay?

Can't see it.
There is a reason why he's never reached the clay tournament final. Besides, guys like Ferrer, Federer, Berdych and Wawrinka can beat him on clay more often than not. Not to mention Djokovic or Nadal.

In what sense? In the sense "every player that competes in the draw can win the event?" Then yes since he's participating. Or is it in the sense "is he a favourite or even above the other outsiders at this event?" Then no, and let me laugh at you. A lot.

I think he always has a chance, but he is fairly far down the list in terms of likely winners. Probably in the top ten likely winners but at the lower end of that scale.

Nope. And I bet he'll look grouchy about it. Then again, he'd probably look grouchy if he won it too.

I think he's capable of making the final but i think winning it is beyond his reach, especially if he were to play Nadal or Novak back to back (which is probably the way it would go)

If he really wanted to, yes. He could have a shot.

However he chance at winning W is better so I'm pretty sure he's gonna tank after the first week at FO and then go straight to London to play on grass before anybody else.

James Ward could win the French - but I can say with some conviction that he probably won't. The same applies to Andy Murray - the only thing up for debate is the degree of conviction.

His odds for winning it are very remote, doesn't really bare discussing as he's so far down the list of favorites. A better thread would of been could he upset one of the favorites - I think yes he could, he's a dangerous QF for anyone if he plays like in Rome. But he doesn't seem to have the fitness to play like that multiple matches in a row.

Every poster had pretty much said no, but the poll stats say yes. He needs to hit his best form since the back op, but it's possible.

Most posters who said no are afraid to go with the flow, the notion that Murray is incapable of winning RG. Well, I for one had always maintained Murray is going to win RG. In fact, I said he will win a total of 4 slams, all different ones or in other words a career slam.

He will definitely not win one. This is by far his worst slam. Especially with the Babolat balls that are not friendly to flat ball hitters.

I could see him winning another Wimbledon though. Especially since his form was really good in Rome. Those are promising signs for the grass season.

He's one of the guys that needs help, like Ferrer or Federer, but he could win it. He needs either Djokovic or Nadal to be taken down by someone else, so that he can eliminate the other. Eliminate Djokodal and I think he could beat everyone else.

I think some 500s, and maybe a Masters here and there are much more realistic expectations for Murray's future.

He's taken Djoko & Rafa to the brink on clay...I reckon it could happen given he has his fair share of luck.

The highest seed that Andy Murray has ever beaten at the French Open has been the 10th seeded Tsonga back in 2010. And that includes is semi-final run in 2011. He's not going anywhere in this tournament.

He displayed a winning game on clay the night against Nadal.

Whether he can produce it over 7 rounds and Bo5 against the top players in the latter rounds is an entirely different matter.

If Stan can win AO, why cannot Murray win FO ?

Nadal will have to lose eventually some time and given his performances this year , an upset will not be hugely surprising.

Only Fed and Novak are the bigger favorites than Murray. Of course I would put Ferrer on par with Murray.

Ferrer should definitely be more of a favourite than Murray- he's a much better clay court player.

My concern is his fitness levels. He's getting gassed way too often...

Let's go Andy, show the world how you can beat your good friend Rafael at RG, for once, in the finals!

Your optimism is endearing, but unfortunately not infectious!

If Andy Murray wins RG this year, given his recent fitness problems, I'll leave TT for 1 month (again).

Murray's not winning it because Djokovic is winning it. Though I would love Murray to beat Rafa. Not likely going to happen in a best of 5 set match.

I am not sure why Murray is still lacking fitness. He has had several months now. Can't he up the number of hours he spends in the gym? Can't he get in a pool and go non stop lane swimming for several hours?

I can't believe there are actually people here who answered "yes".....

Even if you like him and are a fan of him this is just plain delusional, IMO. He himself is the first one to admit that he is nothing special on clay.
Murray is a great player, but quite frankly he is usually a total turd on this surface. A set against a streaky Nadal does not make him a contender for RG. Period. Any other slam? Sure, you can never count him out! RS? Nope.

Anyone think he could do it this year?
Explain...

The more interesting question is, imo, why doesn't Murray's game translate well to clay?
Most people say he's somewhat like Nole and Rafa in terms of playing style, yet they excel on clay and Murray, pardon my French, usually sucks on it.

My personal explanation? He's more like Hewitt than like Rafole. A counterpuncher, who feeds on the opponents pace and thus does better on faster courts than clay, where he needs to create more pace, than he's able to while still hitting with a safety margin. And he hits pretty flat, when he goes for his forehand and when he does spin - or roll - it in, there's not much on it.

Anyone else?

All that said, I still have somewhat of a hope for Murray on clay. Perhaps not this year, but the next ones. And he'll not be an easy opponent in the quarters, if he gets there.
