As he approaches the end of his career, Novak has turned his focus to the majors, not unexpectedly. However, in the current field, he still well ahead in some ways to every player not named Sinner and Alcaraz giving him a chance to capture more of the level 2 events on Tour.

So, weighing his mental orientation towards the majors against his continued high level, does Novak win another M1000?

No, he is Finnish.
At his age, he only has the ATP 250 left to win.
:D

He's got 40, he is the greatest masters series player of all time by a long shot. Double career golden masters.

40 is a nice number to stop at. This dude has been kicking butt for about 20 years, and made a lot of people cry along the way. But even his time has to come to an end.

If he does, shows i was right about what his schedule should have been this season. I said last year he should play all the M1000s as he had a better chance over best of 3 sets against Sinneraz and scoring wins in that format would have helped him at the slams against them mentally. I think he may win Shanghai, and if he does he will regret his arrogant scheduling this season for eternity.

He skips nearly every M1000 to save his body! He just plays them to keep his body in shape.

He’s got a better shot at a Masters than he does at a slam, due to the less-taxing best of 3 set up. I can see him bagging one more Masters title.

I vote yes.

I think Slams are still best for him. He can survive a slow start in Bo5, not so much in Bo3 and the motivation is just not there.

Not likely, Miami was his chance. He doesn't seem super motivated in them.

I don't think he wins a big title again, but I actually think it's slightly more likely at a slam than a M1000.

Very small chance. Next year he has no chance when because Sincaraz just keeps on improving. His last opportunities are Shanghai and Paris, both of which Sinner will undoubtedly wreck him in.

Do you think Djokovic is really at a mental disadvantage to Sinner/Alcaraz? I see that as his strength!

This will sound counterintuitive and I don't really believe it, but I think there's a chance his Bo3 motivation is higher than Bo5 next year.

Just based on his post-USO press conference, he conceded that he can't beat Sinner/Alcaraz in Bo5 anymore, but that Bo3 might be a possibility. If he truly doesn't believe he can win a slam anymore, it's possible he takes the Masters more seriously again because he wants to prove he can still beat those guys.

Ok. This is a fair point. This year it was Slams, and next year it might be M1000. This almost makes more sense if you assume his goals to be “show the kids up” and “catch Fed’s title #”, since he already has the Slam record. I am tempted to agree with you completely and abandon a previous position

He had the easiest route to the title in Miami this year that he could have asked for and still couldn’t get it done. There was no Sinner due to his doping ban and there was no Carl since he had lost to Goofin in his first match…and he ended up losing to Mensik of all players.

In the statistics of most titles won in the open era, the reference barometer is Jimmy Connors, not your idol.

They still don't realize that players of Djokovic's current age can no longer win major titles, even the smallest ones are difficult to achieve for a tennis player approaching 40.

I know that, but Djoko doesn’t care about 109 and isn’t willing to lower himself to where Connors did. 104 is doable

Your predictions that Djokovic will achieve this or that for a long time to come, despite him having the obvious handicap of age, cannot be taken seriously.

He can vulture a few 250/500s to catch Fed’s title haul. I doubt he’s even worried about that

Novak’s mental outlook vs. Sinner/Alcaraz at majors came about bc of his loss of physicality relative to theirs, so it’s physical primarily—obv. overall stamina, agility, speed, power, reaction time, coordination, & balance. On the whole, his steep increase in recovery time between points, between sets, between matches, and between events (although his light sched. neutralizes this to a large degree) is what does him in, and he knows it.

It’s amazing how long it actually took for his body to diminish from a phys. standpt! The definite undisputed Longevity GOAT!

It's not likely at this point. Everyone says, "he's still the 3rd best player in the world". I get that, but he has two things that are going against him:

1. Alcaraz and Sinner are going to make it even more difficult going forward than it has been to this point. Remember, Sinner missed some 1000s this year due to suspension. It's unlikely that happens again. Alcaraz has also seemed to grasp a level of consistency from tournament to tournament that he previously lacked as well which will make it tougher. Given that both of them are so young, it's likely they're both better next year than they were this year too.

2. Djokovic is still aging. 2026 Djokovic probably won't be as good as 2025 Djokovic, just like 2024-2025 Djokovic wasn't as good as 2023 Djokovic. He'll be 39 next year so it's unlikely he'll complete maintain the level he has right now. In 2027, he'll be 40, and I can't imagine any 40-year old winning a slam so if he's going to get one, it has to be next year, and that doesn't seem likely. We're not talking about a guy who "just has to win one over the next 5 years"; we're talking about a guy who needs to win one quick before it's too late.

Only way Novak can push himself to the limits is if RAFA makes a comeback and win #23 . That will become a warning signal to Novak and maybe for one last time Novak will push for #25.
Otherwise it is all over. There is nothing more for Novak than enjoying himself at court.

Cant see it, he cannot win vs both Carlos and Jannik in a tournament now and he would in all likelihood have to beat both to do it. He'd need a bit of luck with maybe one going out tournament early and the order picking up an injury but I don't see him winning vs either of them now.

LOL

You are making it sound like Alcaraz/Sinner will allow these 40 yr old people to win 23, 24 , 25 etc?

Rafa coming back or not has no relevance on Novak's fortunes, it is not upto Rafa or Novak to win anything, they are at the mercy of Alcaraz and Sinner

Djokovic cannot win even a slam now no matter how hard he tries, luck has to shine on him taking Alcaraz and Sinner both out of the draw, he cannot beat even 1 of them now.

My earlier comment said Novak had no chance but with the news Carlos has pulled out of Shanghai, he now has a decent chance. Sinner has not been great form, I know he's in the final for China but if he wants to win Shanghai (Carlos or no Carlos) he needs to up his level. Novak will not get a better opportunity to win another M1000.

Wow that is big. Novak is a good fast court player at this point in his career. #100 incoming?

Im tired of seeing this old man in tournaments. He's like a flying pest that needs to be beaten.
The blame lies with the players born in the 1990s, who even now are unable to defeat a 38-year-old tennis player in GS tournaments.
:X3:

He should be able to if he's in form and gets a decent draw. I'm a little ticked off that Mensik decided to GOAT in the one Masters where Djokovic played very well in the last 2 years and then just disappears for the rest of the season.

LOL. Djokovic has nothing to regret about his career, certainly not any aspect to regret for eternity. He has every significant record other than number of career titles, leads the h2h against his two biggest rivals. He doesn't need to win another slam or masters title to feel fulfilled.
