Both Soderling and Khachanov have a huge long swinging western grip forehands and very aggressive game. Khachanov is still young and developing. Does Khachanov have the potential to be the next gen soderling??

No. Because Soderling had more upside to his game even when he was languishing within the bottom end of the top 100.

Really? How so? Was he talked about more at the time??
It doesn't matter how much he's talked about. It's about watching the matches, not following what John McEnroe thinks. And yes, he had a more powerful, fluid game that could translate to other surfaces more freely. That is why he did well on both clay and indoors.

Does he have the potential to beat him there? Not on the evidence of what we have seen so far. Yet he is getting better, and Nadal is getting older, and going by the US Open match it is not unthinkable.

Not sure it'll be another Soderling though, maybe another Djokovic :D Rafa's years in the wilderness and humanizing at Novak's hands have made the prospect of whooping his ass at Roland Garros much less unthinkable than it was the day Rockin' Robin did it.

lol why go so far? he definitely has the potential to win one or multiple slams. but defeating Nadal at RG? literally two people have done that, and one is an ATG. so if I had to bet, no.

Rafa will be 33 years old during next year's RG final. In reality, any top 20 player should be able to dethrone him just based on his advanced tennis age. Yet the only guy mentally capable of beating him BO5 on clay is Djokovic. Forget Thiem or any next gens, they wet the bed whenever they see Rafa prowling on the other side of the net.

Of course he has the potential. Tons of guys do, especially with Rafa's ripe old age.

No one saw Soderling coming. Anyone can lose to anyone on any day.

Soderling was definitely seen as a promising talent by 2005 when he almost beat Federer in Halle. He was 20 years old at the time.

Having said that, he came up in a time when there was a huge number of young prospects. Khachanov is coming up now in a time when there is a dearth of them and people are desperate to see young players succeed. If Soderling was coming up now, he would be much more hyped than Khachanov simply because he is/was far more talented.

Nadal does indeed need 'dethorne-ing'.

Khachonov can't really be compared to Soderling, because although he is a big guy, he is not really an aggressive hitter like Soderling was. He has power, but he plays the percentages more often than not and has great movement for his height.

Rafa eats guys like him for breakfast at RG. He could definitely upset Nadal on a hard court though.

I don't think so.

1. It's a different time. Beating Nadal in 2019 (when he'll be 33) with all due respect might be easier than beating a prime 23 year old Nadal.
2. Khachanov has got a much much weaker BH.
3. Khachanov is a head-case who falters in the big moments while SoderKing feared no-one and nothing.

Dominic will finally beat Nadal at RG 2019.

Yes, but let's face it both Soderling and Monfils are two pathetic moonballers in the big scheme if you consider tennis history.

Why are you even putting Monfils in the same sentence as Soderling? Better yet, what makes you think this kid is even in Monfils' league? Lol..

40/2018 R64 Shanghai Masters Hard Stefanos Tsitsipas Gael Monfils 7-6(4) 4-6 6-4 1.73 - 2.10

Khach players the winner next so we may have Khach > Tsits > Monfils

We're you living under a rock for Khach's last 4 hour and 20 minute match?

So if a player beats another player that means they are automatically better? I guess Benjamin Becker is better than Agassi because he beat him in their last match.

You're really doubling down on Monfils? Even Khach is on track with the pigeonfils ranking by age and the mental differences are just huge. Please don't prop up the fools who've been bending over for years and years.

To be honest Khach is not that different from Thiem and Tsitsipas is far above.

Thiem isn't far off Monfils.

Question though Meles, how would you rate Gasquet? Or similar young talents from previous eras?

But Djokovic will be 32, so "any top 20 player should be able to dethrone Djokovic based on his avanced tennis age".

It was easy to finish matches in 2003-2007. It's a different era now. Class of 2007 and 2008 had it easy.
